Stressing official preference for pandering to political correctness rather than controlling crime, police in Oxford, England are puttering around in electric ecojokes.

The $33,000 Mitsubishi iMievs are guaranteed unhurtful to polar bears (since electricity is generated from pixie dust) and can go 100 miles on a charge — but only with the lights off. Consequently, cops are not able to use flashing blue lights to get people's attention.

Not to worry though, ecoscientists are working toward a solution:

Some manufacturer's have opted for an integrated solar roof to power such systems, like this quirky Trabant. One obvious drawback of this approach is that extended cloudy or dark periods will render it useless.

Here's an idea: why not let the police drive real cars, and give the electric go-carts to criminals? That way, the cops will be able to catch them.

They've got to be kidding.
