Stressing official preference for pandering to political correctness rather than controlling crime, police in Oxford, England are puttering around in electric ecojokes.

The $33,000 Mitsubishi iMievs are guaranteed unhurtful to polar bears (since electricity is generated from pixie dust) and can go 100 miles on a charge — but only with the lights off. Consequently, cops are not able to use flashing blue lights to get people's attention.

Not to worry though, ecoscientists are working toward a solution:

Some manufacturer's have opted for an integrated solar roof to power such systems, like this quirky Trabant. One obvious drawback of this approach is that extended cloudy or dark periods will render it useless.

Here's an idea: why not let the police drive real cars, and give the electric go-carts to criminals? That way, the cops will be able to catch them.

They've got to be kidding.

Yeah I wrote about this yesterday. I appreciate the idea behind it but were I a subject of Great Britain I wouldn't appreciate the money being wasted. The lights are the least of the problems. Add in crash bars on front, a cage for the criminals in the back, a gun rack, computer terminal, radio, shotgun rack, and the emergency supplies in the "boot" and the car weighs more and more and thus has a smaller and smaller range.

The electric car's time has not yet come - if it ever will be here.
Actually this fits British law enforcement rather well. In cases of robbery, the homeowner is more likely to be arrested than the theif, so an electric car would work fine. Fighting terrorism is racial profiling so they don't do that anymore.

Most of that the British police do these days is scrape their unconscious citizens off the streets after endless binges of drinking and drugs, so there's not a whole lot of pursuit going on there.

Plus electric cars won't explode when torched by Muslim rioters. Less mess to clean up later.

Whatever do you mean? I hear about 'youth' in Europe rioting over 'unemployment', but never any mention of rioting Muslims.
There's an open air shopping mall up in Jacksonville that uses electric mini-cars for mall security. They're smaller, more maneuverable, and less noisy than patrol cars and they can go on the road or on the sidewalk (handy for afternoon shopping hours when the traffic is heaviest). That's about the only realistic application I can think of for these glorified golf carts.

Don't suggest that! Don't you know we're the 'criminals'? We'll have to drive them.

100% correct. Oil still rules cheap, efficient, plentiful, powerful, and practical transportation.
