Donald Douglas Paul Krugman: A Dangerous Nutroots Blogger
(Read WP posts from Donald Douglas) | (Read MT posts from Donald Douglas) | rss

A couple of points need to be highlighted regarding Paul Krugman's opinion piece at New York Times today, "A Dangerous Dysfunction." (Via Memeorandum.)

The first is that the essay's a good indication of the outsized influence of unhinged radical bloggers have on people like Paul Krugman, a Princeton professor and Nobel prizewinner. For example, just last Saturday,
Krugman cited America-basher Matthew Yglesias in a blog post about the progressive foundations of the ObamaCare legislation. (For the extremist context there, recall that last month Yglesias argued moral equivalence between GOP senators filibustering healthcare and first-degree murderers.) In his essay today, Krugman's recycling the months-long argument for killing the filibuster, a proposal most notoriously circulated by Ezra Klein at the Washington Post (who himself argued that Joseph Lieberman's threat of a filibuster would "cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people"), and distributed further by Yglesias et al.

But the second thing is perfectly related to the first. It turns out that last week Krugman announced, "
By all means, hang Senator Joe Lieberman in effigy." And very oddly, in his essay today, after mentioning Tom Harkin and Joseph Lieberman in the same breath, Krugman inserts this passage in parentheses, "(Management wants me to make it clear that in my last column I wasn’t endorsing inappropriate threats against Mr. Lieberman.)"

WTF.

Seriously, what's that supposed to be? As Jennifer Rubin points out, "
A more insincere apology would be hard to find." And she adds:

What is clear is that for all the Times’s snooty condescension about the blogosphere, the editorial pages of the Gray Lady are no better than the average netroot blog. Journalistic ethics? Puh-leez! Common decency? Fuggedaboutit!
That's perfect.

RELATED: From the comments at
the Political Carnival, "Why in effigy? Just kidding. But ol' Joe sure sold us down the river ..."

Not kidding, obviously. And of course, not surprisingly, Charles Johnson's
not trolling the comments on the nutroots side of things. Just saying ...

You have to understand Miller that the folks here have made their own little reality.
Republicans aren't real republicans in Congress so therefore don't refer to them as such.
    It's perfect.
They're conservatives here and are quite rare like seeing a bird that one thought was exstinct and your heart goes aflutter when you catch one in flight.
It is useless to argue with them on most topics as they have marginalized themselves to irrelevancy.
If it doesn't pass conservative muster and trust me just about everything does not pass conservative muster than you can just forget about it.
  • Except that what he is saying is true.

Funny, I don't see any proof to go along with his ridiculous assertions. If what he said was true, one would expect him to provide some sort of evidence.

The Republicans have made it perfectly clear that whatever the dems want they will do just the opposite.

Hell yes! And well they should, since every goddamn thing the worthless Donks come up with is injurious to the country.

Are you denying that the republicans and conservatives in the Congress do not repressent you?

And if so....why would you assert those who you disagree with might repressent me?
  • tblrk2006
Now, you might not think of them as Republicans...but the rest of us do.

Haha. This is funny. Coming from the anti bush president and congress who have even gone as far as to move terrorists from gitmo, a perfect place for them, to illinois for no reason except b/c its opposite of bush.

Only to partisan hacks like you who ignore all rational discussion and simply fall back on "This is the greatest piece of legislation EVER, so anyone that is not 100% in favor of it is just doing it to obstruct".

Democrats have been doing that for years, libliever. And for your information, politics did not begin with Obama. Some of us can remember the Democrats behaviour during other administrations.

That has been Democrat strategy for years. They have been so entrenched in the Anti-Republican that they actively worked for America to be defeated just so they could blame Bush for the war.

For you to say that is the epitome of hypocrisy. You can't defend the idiocy of the Left on healthcare, so all you can do is whine about 'obstruction'. As if that is a Republican concept.

Clue for you, libliever. Political history did not begin when Obama took office. Many of us can remember the Democrats behaviour during other administrations.

    For the love of Pete.
The Republicans have made it perfectly clear that whatever the dems want they will do just the opposite.
Healthcare reform initiatives have been around forever and for good reason. Hell, one of Ted Kennedy's laments was he had a chance to have healthcare overhaul with Nixon of all people I believe Nixon even initiated it and Teddy said no. And no, I don't know why he didn't want to work with Nixon on it but the point is healtcare has needed reform for some time now. Nobody wants to deal with it and when somebody does (finally) aka the dems the repubs have made it their busines to delay, impede and generally be a fly in the ointment.
    It's been rushed through.
    It's not well thought out.
    Blah, blah blah.
Now, if it fails miserably, you guys will have plenty of fodder to blow up dems chances for reelection next time around.
So, there might be a silver lining in all this for yah.
    So, keep the faith.
  • Paul Krugman made some very interesting arguments about the exponentially growing use of the filibuster that you completely ignore.

It figures that you would consider "The Democrats won, therefore they should be able to do whatever the please" a "very interesting argument". After all, you still believe in man-made global warming, even in the face of the Climaquiddick emails that clearly show how climate scientists faked the evidence of global warming. I suppose we shouldn't expect someone with such an already poor grasp of reality to be able to tell the difference between an "interesting argument" and petulant whining.

I guess I can't blame you, seeing as how the facts of his column illustrate that Republicans in the Senate have taken obstructionism to unprecedented levels

Yeah, how dare those awful Republicans demand that the Obamacare bill be read openly on the Senate floor! How dare they demand that all Senators read the bill before signing it! How dare they demand that Congress actually debate this bill instead of rushing it through as fast as possible!

By God, this is simply unprecedented!
  • Pinky
Paul Krugman made some very interesting arguments about the exponentially growing use of the filibuster that you completely ignore. Instead, this post about his column is little more than childishly pointing out that his stance on the filibuster is similar to that of some other guy who once said something else that made right-wingers mad.

I guess I can't blame you, seeing as how the facts of his column illustrate that Republicans in the Senate have taken obstructionism to unprecedented levels, even threatening to delay defense funding as a strike against health care reform. (A move which, had it been taken by Democrats, would surely provoke right-wingers to accusations of anti-Americanism and treason.) But still, if you weren't going to discuss the actual issue, probably better not to raise the topic at all.
