10 Young Right-Wingers Being Prepped to Take Over the Conservative Movement (Featuring John Hawkins)

May I take a moment to brag? It’s my blog; so of course I may! While I never seem to win any awards at these conservative events, the lefties at Alternet have apparently caught a particularly strong whiff of evil in my vicinity, because they’ve put me on their list of 10 Young Right-Wingers Being Prepped to Take Over the Conservative Movement.

On the one hand, it’s a tedious piece full of left-wing boilerplate, but on other hand, I’m on there with Mary Katharine Ham, Kathryn Jean Lopez, & Reihan Salam. So, it’s not so bad. I also think I’m the only independent blogger on the list, too, which is kind of cool.

PS: On a completely related note, I’d like to thank my close, personal friend Melissa Clouthier for the picture associated with the article. First of all, she took the picture, which is the worst picture of me in recorded history — which is a pretty nifty trick, given that I’m not that photogenic anyway. She then, after I asked her not to do so, posted it publicly, where it naturally & immediately spread EVERYWHERE.

Now, it’s bad enough that I have a terrible haircut in that picture, weighed at least 40 pounds more than I do today, and am over-grinning like I had a severe head injury, but I’m standing next to one of the best known people in the Republican Party, Michael Steele. This has quite understandably led to this being THE default pic for me on every liberal website in existence. If there’s a picture of John Hawkins, this is the picture. I can’t blame them for that because I’d do the same thing. Still, knowing how it works with conservatives and pics, this will be my default picture for the next 20 years.

So M, you’re still my buddy, but if I ever get a pic of you with one eye open, making a monkey face, standing next to Michelle Malkin, it’s going up on Facebook, honey. So, just prepare yourself. Lol.

PS #2: Incidentally, since this pic keeps popping up, I thought I’d at least give people a quick rundown on it. First off, here’s the pic I took of Melissa with Michael Steele. She looks adorable, doesn’t she?

Melissa Clouthier & Michael Steele

It was from the 2008 Americans for Prosperity RightOnline shindig in Austin, Texas. We ran into Steele and even though his handlers were trying to rush him off, when he heard I ran the Rightroots group that raised money for him during his Senate race in Maryland, he was grateful and happy to hang around for a few minutes and take a couple of snaps. I haven’t always agreed with everything Steele has done at the RNC, but I do think Steele’s a good guy and his heart’s in the right place.

PS #3: Americans for Prosperity is having another event next week in DC. It’s the Defending the American Dream Summit and it shoehorns right into Glenn Beck’s big rally. They’ve invited me to be there, I’m going, and I hope to see you there, too!
