Rep. Peter King Attempts to Exploit Tucson Shootings With Nonsensical Gun Restrictions

Not all threats to our liberty come from Democrats. Rep. Peter King (R-NY) has distinguished himself for his strong stand against Islamic terrorism and his open contempt for the New York Times. Yet he lines up behind leftist congresscritters like Carolyn McCarthy and Robert Brady to exploit the Tucson Massacre as yet another opportunity to chip away at what remains of our constitutional liberties.

The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee wants to ban people from carrying weapons within 1,000 feet of federal officials at public events.

Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.) said he would propose a bill in the coming weeks that would ban the carrying of guns within that range for the president, vice president, members of Congress and federal judges.

King made the announcement accompanied by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an outspoken advocate for tighter gun restrictions.

Mayor-for-Life Bloomberg, a totalitarian who has been pushing to repeal the Second Amendment not just in his own fiefdom, but for the whole country, added this gem of Orwellian doublespeak:

“That does not take away the Second Amendment, I think it protects it.”

2+2=5 if our oligarchical collectivist rulers say so.

This will come as a big surprise to statist bureaucrats like King and Bloomberg, but not all problems can be solved by imposing still more onerous coercive restrictions. Who could possibly think this law would have prevented the Jared Loughner shootings? Maniacs don’t worry about the law against murder, why would they care about a petty regulation like this? Not only would King’s moronic attempt to exploit the tragedy not prevent it from happening again, it would make it more likely to happen again, by guaranteeing that no law-abiding citizen will be in a position to shoot the shooter before more innocents are killed.

This isn’t about public safety. It’s about tightening government restrictions each time there’s an opportunity, like a python squeezing the life from its prey.
