Obama is a U.S. citizen, no matter where he was born.
  26 May 2012     8:58 am

I’ve made this same point before, with no effect. So maybe now that Byron York is writing about the latest “Obama citizenship” flap, we can make some headway.
York writes:
The Constitution specifies that a president must be a “natural born citizen” of the United States, but it does not define the term. The Supreme Court has never clarified the issue, but there is a law, 8 U.S. Code 1401, that spells out in detail who is a citizen.
The law uses the phrase “citizens of the United States at birth” and …

Blaska: make Democrats pay the taxpayers back for this recall
  19 May 2012     10:52 am

Madison blogger David Blaska – make that Madison conservative blogger David Blaska, which I know sounds like an oxymoron – is sending this bill to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin:

Dave writes:
I am sending a taxpayers’ bill for $16 million c/o Mike Tate, Democrat(ic) Party of Wisconsin, 110 King St., Suite 203, Madison, WI 53703. I invite you to do the same. Copy this graphic and email it to MikeT@wisdems.org.
I love how he throws that extra $15 onto the bill. Graeme Zielinski is the WisDems’ communications director, who burned a …

A Tale of Two States, or: If They’re Going to Recall Walker, What’ll They Do to Brown?
  13 May 2012     12:11 pm

On the other hand, maybe California’s Gov. Brown would like to invite Gov. Walker out for a little shop talk?
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California’s budget deficit has swelled to a projected $16 billion — much larger than had been predicted just months ago — and will force severe cuts to schools and public safety if voters fail to approve tax increases in November, Gov. Jerry Brown said Saturday.
The Democratic governor said the shortfall grew from $9.2 billion in January in part because tax collections have not come in as high …

Madison, Wisconsin, city council thanks Occupy Madison, asks if they’ve got a spare joint around anyplace.
  14 Apr 2012     12:57 pm

What? No, I most certainly did not mean to imply any sort of drug, or drug paraphernalia. Joint. Y’know, as in place.
Oh, let’s just start at the beginning:
According to Madison-area blogger Dave Blaska, the police have been called to the Occupy site 80 times in the 150 days it has been active; more than every other day. “Theft, fighting, trespass, property damage, noise complaints, drugs, unlawful weapons, sexual assault, and public intoxication were the predictable manifestations of all this responsibility-free liberal compassion,” notes Blaska.
You may be surprised …

WEAC: well at least our blatant and hypocritical partisanship is for the children!
  14 Apr 2012     10:40 am

Got this in my inbox today: a comparison of how Wisconsin schools fared in past years vs. this year, and a comparison of what WEAC – the state teacher’s union – said about those past years vs. this year.
FYI: those past years, there was a Democrat in office.
A Case Study: WEAC Then and Now
MADISON—Today Governor Walker’s office released a summary of what WEAC was saying about education in the last decade, along with a comparison to their recent comments.
“Schoolchildren are benefiting from Governor Walker’s education and budget reforms,” …

When does socialism begin?
  7 Apr 2012     10:01 am

Dan Mitchell is, of course, correct when he says:
This is an appropriate point for the disclaimer that Obama is not a socialist, which technically requires government ownership of the means of production. As I’ve explained before, it’s much more accurate to say he’s a statist, a corporatist, or a redistributionist.
True enough, as long as we’re sticking to textbook socialism. But here’s a thought I’ve kicked around for a while: what, exactly, makes your property your property?
Okay, so you’ve got a piece of paper saying it’s yours. Just how …

Wyoming and Colorado never had this problem – North, South Carolina had their border wrong!
  24 Mar 2012     5:04 pm

Back in 1735, using poles and chains and the sun, surveyors mapped out the border between North and South Carolina.
But today:
…modern-day surveyors, using computers and GPS systems, redrew the border to narrow it down to the centimeter. Their results put the new line about 150 feet south of the old one and placed Boulware’s Lake Wylie Minimarket in North Carolina, where the gas prices are 30 cents higher and the fireworks that boost his bottom line are illegal.
“If I end up across the line, it is going to shut this …

We may disagree about Obamacare in general, but we agree on one fact: Obamacare is a tax on youth and health
  24 Mar 2012     9:52 am

Whatever comes of the SCOTUS case coming up next week, we’ll always agree on that.
Couple law professors wrote in the Baltimore Sun the other day, arguing that Obamacare is, too, Constitutional. Here’s the best part:
The individual mandate is the centerpiece of a complex regulatory scheme that accomplishes two objectives: obligating insurers to cover individuals with preexisting conditions, and doing so without generating prohibitively costly premiums. Achieving these goals requires what insurers call risk pooling. Broad coverage at reasonable rates is only possible when premiums of individuals least …

Coming soon: graphic pictures of cancer patients on every can of Coke
  10 Mar 2012     6:56 pm

At least, California would probably like to force Coke and Pepsi to put ugly, graphic, gross pictures of severely ill people on every can. But since they can’t:
Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. are changing the way they make the caramel coloring used in their sodas as a result of a California law that mandates drinks containing a certain level of carcinogens come with a cancer warning label.
The companies said the changes will be expanded nationally to streamline their manufacturing processes. They’ve already been made for drinks sold in California.
Well, …

Downright unsettlin’, higher education edition:
  10 Mar 2012     4:11 pm

Instapundit had this quote the other day, from the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Alex Tabarrok:
In 2009 the United States graduated 89,140 students in the visual and performing arts, more than in computer science, math, and chemical engineering combined and more than double the number of visual-and-performing-arts graduates in 1985.
On its face, that’s downright unsettlin’. Upon further review, though, I’m not so sure. Yes, that’s an awful lot of “visual and performing arts” degrees. But…that paragraph implies that it’s a ridiculous number, compared to the number of computer …
