Don’t Hate Him Because He’s Right
Written By : Sharon Soon

I can’t pretend that I know what it’s like to have to face the scrutiny of hundreds of your Congressional peers as they publicly denounce you for a comment as harmless as “You lie”, but I wish that South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson had not been so humble and contrite after his now famous outburst during Barack Obama’s speech on health care last night:

Vice President Joe Biden says a Republican congressman’s outburst during President Barack Obama’s health-care speech Wednesday night “demeaned the institution.”

South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson shouted “You lie” after Obama said extending health care to all Americans would not mean insuring illegal immigrants.

Appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Thursday, Biden said the incident made him “embarrassed for the chamber and a Congress I love.”

“There’ll be time enough to consider whether or not we ought to make it clear that that action is unacceptable in the House of Representatives,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said late Wednesday on WTOP radio when asked about possible punishment for Wilson. “I’ve talked to Republican members who share that view.”

“Everybody was stunned,” Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., said of Wilson’s eruption. “It was just something that nobody had ever witnessed before. We all felt embarrassed.”

Embarrassing? Demeaning? Just leave it to the self-righteous liberals to feign moral indignance, AS IF they were ever actually concerned about congressional decorum. Do I need to bring up the last eight years under President George Bush?

Actually, I just googled “Democrats boo Bush”, and the phrase pops up as a top google search term; I’m glad the public hasn’t forgotten. For anyone who has, here’s a quick reminder:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBxmEGG71PM

The left’s pseudo-indignance on all things inappropriate is bad enough. The double standard is even worse. THEY want to tell REPUBLICANS about demeaning behavior?

That hurts, but what pains me most is how a man whose only offense is being too emotional when challenging the president’s claims is so quickly abandoned by his own party. It’s as though Republicans think Democrats will start playing nice if they Republicans start picking on their own kind (I’m pretty sure we’ve tried this before. It doesn’t work).

Apparently, John McCain is as odious as ever:

Reaction to the outburst included criticism from members of Wilson’s own party.

“Anybody who would cat-call the president of the United States addressing this body is very, very inappropriate, and he will hear from a lot of us about that,” Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., told FOX News Radio.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Wilson’s behavior was “totally disrespectful. There is no place for it in that setting, or any other, and he should apologize for it immediately.”

They can’t seem to denounce Rep. Wilson fast enough. I’m not sure what Republicans think they’re going to gain from it. Perhaps they’re confusing the Congressman for being a sex offender, or maybe a drug addict. Or, at least, a tax-evader? Actually, those would all be crimes that Democratic officials have been found guilty of over the past few years, so those offenses must be off limits.

Instead, let’s all raise hell because a Republican Congressman shouted, “You lie” during a Presidential address. Did anyone else notice that the rest of the audience was booing, too?

I’d hate to see the Democrats use this minor, minor event as a way to garner opposition against Republicans at a time when we’ve finally made some gains in fighting Obama’s socialist healthcare agenda. What our Party should be doing now is unifying to challenge the REAL threat at hand (and an FYI to the John McCain’s of the world, it’s not Joe Wilson. Sorry.).

The truth is that Rep. Wilson did not express anything different from what many others in that room were thinking that night, and what 52% of Americans right now believe. The Congressman would have every right to defend himself against these unwarranted attacks, and the rest of his Party would be wise not to bail on him now.

If Rep Wilson realized he went to far, and to his credit he immediatly apologized for doing what he did.

I would love to see them try to go after Wilson for that.

    Run the ad…

Show Rep Wilson calling out Obama's policy.. then show Rangle.. and his tax evasions…

Show rep wilson… then show William Jefferson, and his fridge

Show Rep Wilson… then show Barney Franks, and his .. uhm.. "pad"?

Calling out someone for telling a lie… Ethically wrong?

Breaking the law… The Democrat way

I'm sure a lot more could be brought up… but to hell with the Republicans who are denouncing Cong. Wilson… If I were a SC voter, I'd be sending him money right now… (sorry boys, but I don't donate to candidates not in my district!)

I made a campaign contribution to Mr. Wilson this morning for saying out loud what I was thinking. I encourage others to do likewise.

Groaning is not outright disrespect through interuption.

You are trying to equate dems moaning to Joe Wilson screaming "You lie!"?

    That's pathetic.

The reason why Reps are smacking this guy down, and the reason why he profusely apologized, is because it was wrong, weaselesque and doesn't do anything to build support for the Republican position.

The right may cheer Joe Wilson, but that's only because you such little else to cheer for.

This healthplan is going to pass.

  • Markus

    Did anyone see this one?

The antics continued when Obama urged opponents to “come to me with a serious set of proposals.” About 20 Republican members raised copies of the GOP health-reform proposal over their heads. They raised their props again when Obama criticized those who think “it’s better politics to kill this plan than improve it.”

I'm asking, because I didn't see that happen during the replay… (hey, if it comes down to listening to a liar or watching a baseball game, baseball wins!)

    because it was wrong, weaselesque

Wow… so calling someone to tell the truth is wrong? Dammit.. he is the President of the United States, not the all-knowing, omnipotent Messiah.. and if he's lying, we need to call him out on it.

This healthplan is going to pass.

Not going to happen… there's too much of a split in the Dem party… I've seen 4 reports say 100 dem Reps will vote "No" if there's no public option, and somewhere around 56-60 who will vote "no" if there is a public option.

If Republicans stand their ground and vote "no" regardless, this plan isn't getting out of Congress.

Wow… so calling someone to tell the truth is wrong? Dammit.. he is the President of the United States, not the all-knowing, omnipotent Messiah.. and if he's lying, we need to call him out on it.

First of all, what Obama said was correct & truthful. So Joe Wilson was the one who was lying.

Second of all, as I said on the other thread, the POTUS had the floor. Joe Wilson amounted to Code Pink interupting Bush.

Of course it was wrong. Let Mr. Wilson go talk to the President afterwards and call him a liar to his face, rather than from the crowd like a coward.

Lastly, as I said, Mr. Wilson himself admitted it was wrong as well as Senior Reps. So if he himself says it was wrong, you're arguing it was right?

I've seen 4 reports say 100 dem Reps will vote "No" if there's no public option, and somewhere around 56-60 who will vote "no" if there is a public option.

I don't know what reports you're seeing Markus. And reports don't matter much to the actual vote. And don't matter much when considering this speech, and the ensuing pressure that will be applied to Dems from now until Thanksgiving.

My sources say 10-20 votes House, 6-10 votes Senate. And that's with the bill in its current form.

All that's needed is the pols to go back to their home states and get a poll as what their constituents wants. If there is any bounce, this plan is in.

"Groaning is not outright disrespect through interuption."

Yes it is. It's purpose was solely to show disrespect to the President.

At the end of the day, the US Congress should not turn into a scene from Idiocracy, but the President should be held accountable for his lies.

When the very liberal AP provides a list of the untruths President Obama told during his speech last night, then you know he's stretching things way, way too thin.

Fair enough, Bildo. My thing is that if you feel the President is lying you should do it in an appropriate manner. Like a man. Not a class-clown.

Many, many people believed Bush and Cheney in particular were huge liars. Thinking someone a liar, whether it's correct or not, does not give you the right to be an asshole.

Of course the right is defending Wilson, even though he won't do it himself. Because the base always pines for their party to strive to be fearless, ballsy and confrontational.

But in the real world you only end up being an asshole. Joe Wilson was there representing his state, his party and his country. He embarassed all.

If Obama was such a liar, this would not be necessary.

  • D-Vega

ROFLMAO! Nice one, Vega. Good joke.

The only joke here is the Republicans thinking they actually deserve to have a majority voice when they are the minority.

I think Wilson did the right thing.

Of course you did. A party that has had a string of failures of course welcomes rancor. It helps fundraising.

Lying about what? Joe Wilson was squealing regarding illegals being covered under the public option. And that is clearly false. So Wilson was the one being dishonest here. And he apologized like a little bitch.

BULLSH!T it takes more balls to say that from the floor of a joint seession of Congress, where it was QUITE obvious who did it, on National TV than it does to be giving that speech in the first place.

Unless the bill contains a provision allowing health care workers to inquire about a patient's immigration status, you can say "the plan won't treat illegals" until you're blue in the face without changing the fact that no one can tell legals from illegals without asking.

The faux outrage and goofy false shock being displayed by the left about this outburst is hilarious to behold, and pretty transparent. It just hasn't been long enough since the spittle-flecked hateful and insane screams about President Bush echoed in everyone's ears.

Joe Wilson was squealing regarding illegals being covered under the public option. And that is clearly false.

Actually, its true – even the AP admitted that in their speech analysis. But you know, truth, schmooth as long as your guys are in power. We understand.

  • D-Vega

I'll see your AP, and raise you a Politfact, CT:

When we look at all of this evidence, it seems that health reform leaves in place the status quo on illegal immigration, and certainly does not provide any new benefits particularly for illegal immigrants. We hope to look at this issue more in the days ahead, because some hospitals are particularly concerned about recouping their costs for treating illegal immigrants, and we're curious to know more about that problem and how it might or might not be solved by reform.

The best argument that we find that health reform would help illegal immigrants is that some might be able to purchase the public option — if it passes, and it might not — on the new health insurance exchange. They would purchase that at full cost. Obama's said "the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally," which Wilson said was a "lie." Actually, Obama can make a pretty thorough case that reform doesn't apply to those here illegally. We don't find the public option argument enough to make the case that Obama "lied." We rate Wilson's statement False.

  • smelvertising

health reform leaves in place the status quo on illegal immigration, and certainly does not provide any new benefits particularly for illegal immigrants.

Now, how many times has Vega been told that the bill can say whatever it wants, because without enforcement clauses illegals will have access to public healthcare at the expense of their neighbor?

Is it a thousand times yet?

    Go home, Vega.

  • http://networdblog.blogspot.com/ Christopher_Taylor

So Vega what you're saying is that the Associated Press is wrong and a left wing site is right?

Someday you're gonna have to step back and realize you're loyal to a liar and a corrupt radical, Vega. That day is eventually gonna come and you're gonna wonder why you clung to the guy so long.

And if it took balls, then why apologize so profusely?

Someday you're gonna have to step back and realize you're loyal to a liar and a corrupt radical, Vega.

For a brief time I thought so too, CT… but Vega's beyond the saving that a thorough personal crisis would bring.

He needs his guy in government, or he can't delude himself of having any sort of self-worth. What Obama says or means or does is irrelevant.

Liberals "won". His ideas got some sort of validation. He isn't the abysmal refuse of a person he sees himself to be every morning in the mirror – his neighbor is.

If you'll notice, since November, he has not had one other comeback (besides running away) except "Obama is in the WH, get over it". Not. One.
