Obama Would Have Killed Subway In The Crib

Okay, it’s not ALL his fault, but yes, he is a big part of the problem that Subway founder Fred Deluca was talking about.

Duluca explained businesses are bracing for the increased costs that will come with “Obamacare,” adding that any cost increases will be passed along to customers through higher prices.

It was while describing the current business climate for up and coming entrepreneurs that Deluca said “Subway would not exist” if he started his business today because of massive government regulations.

“It’s continuously gotten worse, because there’s more and more regulations. It’s tougher for people to get into business. Especially a small business,” he said. “I tell you, if I started Subway today, Subway would not exist, because I had an easy time of it in the ’60s when I started. I just see a continuous increase in regulation.”

Subway is a great business that employs a lot of Americans, pays a lot of taxes, and even serves up relatively healthy food. Yet, it couldn’t exist if it started today. This sort of thing slips past a lot of people because it’s a dog that doesn’t bark. People just scratch their heads and wonder why the economy isn’t growing, why tax revenues are lower than they should be, and why businesses aren’t creating jobs. But, the more regulations you have, the more everything costs. The more a business has to spend on regulations, the less it has to spend on employees, on production and marketing. Moreover, the higher the barriers are to enter the market. Sure, you might be able to produce a superior product, but small businesses can’t handle all the extra costs as cheaply and efficiently as corporations. Paradoxically, that’s one of the reasons the biggest businesses out there are so friendly to Democrats who rail against them and want to raise their taxes. Those same Democrats will help regulate their smaller, nimbler competition out of existence. At this point, if we did nothing but take regulations OFF THE BOOKS for the next decade, we’d all be much better off.
