Spike Lee: Obama’s Gotta Go Off!
Written By : John Hawkins

Spike Lee is in the news again and it’s not for making one of his increasingly awful movies. Remember when he made good films? Ok, me neither. But, I kind of liked She’s gotta have it. Not enough to watch it twice or  anything, but we’re starting  to  get  off track here,

“One time, go off!” director Spike Lee urged on CNN’s “AC 360°.” “If there’s any one time to go off, this is it, because this is a disaster.”

Lee’s sentiment echoes the frustration of people who want to see Obama get loud, take charge and inspire them like he did during his presidential run.

Yes, Obama needs to shake his fist at the oil well, scream “RARRRRRRRRRRRR” as loud as possible and then what exactly? Is the oil going to withdraw back into the ground in terror because of “The One’s” awful fury? No. It won’t do a single thing to fix the problem, but — and here’s the key for liberals — it will help create the illusion that Obama looks at the oil spill as something other than a giant distraction from his efforts to socialize America. That was the point of the whole  ”plug that damn hole” leak. See, he cares about something…..besides himself.

Ever notice that the only thing that ever genuinely seems to get Obama fired up is criticism that’s aimed at him personally? Trash America and he may bow to you. An Obama spill trashes the Gulf? He goes golfing. But, aim some criticism his way? Then he starts to seethe. Then some emotion starts to leak out of that empty suit. Sorry,  America, but that’s just how narcissists roll and Obama’s not even good at pretending to care about other people’s problems. Maybe he can ask Bill Clinton to teach him how to bite his lip and appear sad on cue and then, the problem is solved! Well, for liberals.

ahh Spike Lee. The worst director working today. Ok, sratch that. I suspect that history will deem that Lee will eventually grab from the late Ed Wood the title of worst director in history. At least Wood's films are funny (if untentionally so..) and Wood lacks the chip on his shoulder and character flaws that Lee posesses in spades. Read a transcript of any interview Spike lee has ever done. H comes across as a classless, profane idiot.
Hawkins is way too generous in describing Lee's work. I've never seen anything that he did that was remotely worth the price of admission. I'm amazed that he can manage to get finantial backers for his films any more. Actually that's not true. I'm not suprised. Despite the fact that Lee is a horrific director who produces some of the worst movies in recent memory he's a darling of the media and critics. Why? Well, he's a black man in a more or less predominantly white profession. They are willing to overlook his acidic personality and lack of anything resembling talent because they WANT him to suceed. The comments that Limbaugh made a few years back about Donavan McNabb apply equally (some might think more so) to Spike Lee.

That all being said, this is pretty much a non-story as no one takes anything this clown says seriously. No one….except perhaps Spike Lee himself. That makes this a “fun thread” rather than a serious discussion, so I don't feel back about a little somewhat off topic rant. ;-)

Mrs. Trench Raider made me sit through “Miracle at Saint Anna”. I still have not forgiven her for that one! It has to be the worst WW2 movie I have ever had the dubious honor of watching. Most people who produce WW2 movies will employ military and/or historical advisors to help them get the details right. Lee seems to have never heard of such a thing. I won't bore you all with every little error in the costuming (given my hobbies, it's no suprise that I have an eye for such things) but I have not seen such awful uniforms (on either side mind you) in any movie made since the '60s. In today's enviorment were research material is commonplace and decent affordable replica kit is widely available this sort of thing is unacceptable and just symtomatic of a lazy attitude on the part of the director. I mean it's bad enough when a recent movie gets the Axis uniform grossly wrong, but when you see the (far more easy to procure) American uniforms and kit overtly incorrect, then something is seriously wrong. (using British .303 Browning aircraft machineguns when large numbers of the correct M1919s sit in Hollywood armories? Common!)

But it gets worse than that. In one flashback scene the main characters are shown during their training back in the US. The caption indicates that they are at Camp Claiborne in Lousianna. Well, I've been to Camp Claiborne several times. (there is an anual D-Day reenactment there that I've attended several times) It's all old growth pine forrest. Lee depicts it as a dusty southwestern desert. As the kiddies say: W… T… F…? it's the lack of attention to even the most basic of details like that, which show us that Lee didn't give a s–t about anything while making this movie.

Then there is the absurd plot (with holes I could drive a tank through) and the laughable acting on the part of pretty much everyone on the screen. Finally there is the uncomfortable and wildly implausable inter-racial romance that Lee shoe horns into the story. (complete with gratuitous and graphic sex scene) Lee includes this in alot of his films. I suspect he does this simply to shock as he assumes that “racist Whites” (no doubt in lee's mind most Whites) will be offended and he wants to poke them with a stick.

Anyway, worst WW2 movie in recent memory, if not ever.

    Ok, rant over! ;-)

His argument is not invalidated by his own character. Implying it is is called an ad hominem. This has been a lesson in logic

His argument is not invalidated by his own character. Implying it is is called an ad hominem

That's one of the areas were you are wrong. You always have to look at the person making the statement to determine a sense of context and to establish motive and other background factors. For example when I see something posted by one of our known idiots and/or trolls, no matter what they actually post I have to keep their status and motives in mind when evaluating what they are saying. The same can be said of Lee's crackpot statement.

While I disagree with him, I do so because his point is inane, not because of his career.

It's possible to do both. When forming an opinion it's best to draw from a number of factors.

Additionally, Spike Lee's success is not based on the Hollywood film industry's affirmative action tactics. He happens to do a good job. Overall, Hollywood is still disproportionately white in its actors and talent so if they were just handing out jobs to underqualified black directors we'd notice

I never said that Hollywood was handing out jobs to less than qualified black directors willy nilly. That's called a “strawman argument”. I stand by my contention that Lee is an idiot and a very, very poor director and that the primary reason that he still has a job is that he's a darling of the media and critics due to his race. He's the stereotypical “token black”. His complete lack of skills is not important. He's someone that guilty, self-loathing White leftists can point to and say “I'm not a racist! See? I like Spike Lee's movies!”

His movies are in their entirety steaming crap. “Inside Man”, which you mention above had potential. It was an interesting concept, and had the potential to be a good light “fun” movie. But true to form, Lee ruined it.

For Christ's sake, they cast a bunch of Caucasians in Prince of Persia.

        Persians are caucasians. Doofus.

      • billdalasio

Finally, 'Do the Right Thing' and 'Mo Better Blues' were really solid movies.

Okay, Okay, I'll bite. In what way was 'Do the Right Thing' actually a good movie?

      • mightysamurai

His argument is not invalidated by his own character.

What in the frack are you talking about?

Trench dwelled on Spike Lee's so-called “character” for all of…what, two sentences? The rest was about his atrocious moviemaking abilities and had nothing at all to do with his “character”. Whose post are you responding to here?

He happens to do a good job.

You…realize Trench just spent a whole five paragraphs explaining why he isn't good at his job, right?

Did you even READ his post or did you just puke out a knee-jerk, I-hate-conservatives-so-I-must-respond post?

  • Christopher_Taylor

These kind of responses tell me that the left is starting to grok that Obama isn't just inexperienced, he's incompetent. He's no leader, he has no ability to get the job done. But they don't quite comprehend that or what it takes to be a leader, so they think he's just not aggressive enough or not being outspoken and visible enough. Bruce McQuain has a terrific post on his site about things Obama could and should be doing to show leadership.

  • mazabdul

I agree with Hawk personally. We're not idiots, it's not like a speech is going to make everything better. Though speeches are a good political maneuver, it's usually assumed that they're morale boosters that will eventually be followed by some sort of action.

Spike Lee is a jerk his movies stink and he once whinned becuase the MEL GIBSON movie THE PATRIOT didnt show any signs of slaves

    • UFKA_Smithwick

Wasn't there that one slave that some guy tried to enlist in the army in his stead? Mel Gibson asked the slave to sign his own name or something along those lines, it's been a while.

      • mightysamurai

        Occam.

And Lee was just being pissy because Mel Gibson had the gall to play a white American Colonist character who treats black people as equals. After all, we can't have people thinking our forefathers were anything but a bunch of vile slave-owning racists, now can we?

        • Trench_Raider

          Heh.
That and well, Gibson can actually direct and produce a decent movie.

Didn't he also bust Eastwood's chops for not including blacks in Clint's Iwo Jima movies?
I think Eastwood told him to take a hike.

    • King Homer

He was wrong about that too. Apparently he didn't see the need to read the script or watch the movie. Liberals are like that…. commenting on something they know bugger-all about.

There was in fact a black that played a slave and he stayed on after he was declared a freeman when his first enlistment was up.

Spike should pay more attention to his tax returns and give up being a film critic. As was stated by some enlightened one earlier, Spike Lee makes crap movies and if he persists he will be broke and homeless in no time at all.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

So some people are finally realizing that a community organizer and a president are radically different jobs and being successful at one doesn't mean you're qualified for the other.

Great. More than a year too late to do any good, but I guess later is better than never.

  • baoxian

Spike assumes Obama actually gives a crap about the environment or Gulf Coast residents. He doesn't. In fact just the opposite. This is just another good crisis to be exploited. Juxtapose pictures of tar balls and gooey birds with the usual rote speech about “green energy” and Cap and Tax, boom, vehicle for more government power.

Obama won't go off because he thinks he can benefit from the situation. Sad part is, somebody like Spike Lee would see this clear as day if Obama had an (R) after his name. But liberals can't question the messiah.

  • kingofsiam

Why can't libs feel the same way about Obama and Iran?
