Tim Geithner Says He was Told to Lie on Television by the White House

Tim Geithner’s nomination to be the Secretary of the Treasury raised a lot of eyebrows, and considering that he owed almost $40,000 in back taxes at the time, rightfully so. But now that he’s going back into the private sector, he’s decided to pen a book about his time in the Obama administration, and apparently, his strategy to sell books is sell out the White House.

Tim-Geithner

And in that memoir, he’s decided to explain that, when you got bad information from him about the economy, that totes wasn’t his fault. And, if his Sunday morning interviews sounded a little like they contained catch-phrases designed to queue up salivating liberal bloggers like they’d just heard Pavlov’s dinner bell, well, that’s because they were.

“I remember during one Roosevelt Room prep session before I appeared on the Sunday shows, I objected when Dan Pfeiffer wanted me to say Social Security didn’t contribute to the deficit. It wasn’t a main driver of our future deficits, but it did contribute. Pfeiffer said the line was a ‘dog whistle’ to the left, a phrase I had never heard before. He had to explain that the phrase was code to the Democratic base, signaling that we intended to protect Social Security.”

Here’s the thing. Apparently, the left’s bloggers meet over milkshakes to discuss codewords with administration officials, such that a member of the Cabinet can use one on a television show and inspire the entire lefty blogosphere into action. And they say they’re terrible at staying on message together. Apparently, only because someone missed the meeting.

If Tim Geithner expected this to be a juicy tidbit to drop in order to garner interest in his book, he may end up being disappointed — after all, the JournoList debacle already proved to the world that liberals in the media exist to prop up Obama and encourage Democrats to get to the polls. This is just business as usual for Obama and the drive-by media.
