NFL Legend Herschel Walker: Trump is ‘Getting a Raw Deal,’ ‘We Have to Respect Him as Our President’ [VIDEO]

In an appearance on Fox & Friends, legendary running back Herschel Walker talked football and Donald Trump, who attended the game being played by his Alma Mater this week. Walker, who was born and raised in Georgia, was a three-time consensus all-American for the Bulldogs, amassing 5,259 rushing yards and 49 touchdowns over three seasons. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1982 and then went on to play for the New Jersey Generals of the now-defunct USFL for three seasons, including two when Trump owned the team. Walker moved to the NFL in 1986 and played there through 1997.

He had been invited on to talk about the game and about his friend Donald Trump who was going to be there to see which school would take the College Football Playoff national championship trophy home. The Sugar Bowl, featuring Walker’s University of Georgia against the University of Alabama, kicked off last night just after 7 pm CT. The Crimson Tide won in overtime against the Georgia Bulldogs in a dramatic finish, 26-23. That must have been a disappointment to Walker.

Walker, 55, has stuck up for Trump recently. In November, the Heisman Trophy winner said that the protests kneeling during the National Anthem are “upsetting” and he blamed Roger Goodell for allowing the controversy to drag on. He said that he knows he’ll get backlash for saying it, but Goodell “should have stopped the protests at the very beginning.” Incidentally, Trump had the same idea. Speaking with Hannity, Trump said that Colin Kaepernick should have been slapped with a one game suspension for kneeling. And if he did it again? A two game suspension.

At the time, Walker said that while “black lives matter,” respect for that “very special” flag should be observed and that players should take time from their off-season schedule to “go to Washington” and “protest there instead.”

Speaking directly to players, Walker said that “we have young men and women fighting for the flag” and that’s why it deserves respect.

So, he was well prepared to be sympathetic to Trump when he spoke to Fox, saying that Trump was being hit with “a raw deal” and that people are “forgetting” to respect the office. Walker called Trump “a great man” and supported the President’s criticism of NFL players who have taken a knee during the National Anthem as a means of protesting police brutality and racial inequality. “I’m glad he’s at the game, because he loves football,” Walker said on Fox News. “It’s sad what’s happened with all the kneeling and standing and all that, because Donald Trump is a great man, he’s a great President and I wish people could understand that.”

“One of the things I want to say about the protests, where was everyone before the season started?” Walker said a few months ago. “I didn’t see anyone protesting in front of the White House, protesting in front of the Congress or protesting in front of police officers. Why did we wait ‘til football season started to start this again?” Walker, president and CEO of Georgia-based Renaissance Man Food Services LLC, said that as a businessman, he wouldn’t be able to tolerate employees protesting on the job. “I gotta run a business,” he said. “I got people that are trying to buy from me.” “[NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell] got to step in and say ‘Guys, we have advertisers, we have sponsors, we have a lot of people that this is a job,’” he added.

The former football player was asked if he thought he would “cross paths” with Trump at the game and Walker confirmed that the two would meet there and that he hadn’t seen him in a while. He then explained that they’ve been friends for a very long time and “still work together on some things,” or at least they did before Trump became “the big man on campus.”

As for the impact of having Trump at the game, Walker said that the President is a “great man” who loves football. “I say respect the White House, guys,” Walker said. “We voted for him to be President and because of that, we have to respect him as our President.” Walker stated.
