Passing Thoughts on the Random Scene

A decade ago, my son, a talented writer in his own right, with a dry, self-deprecating sense of humor, published as his senior university thesis a series of original short stories, which he dubbed with the tongue-in-cheek title, “All the Things in the World.” Similarly, I occasionally feel there is so much on which to comment that I am left with the dilemma of opining on everything or nothing. And since illness sidelined me from this column last week, I have chosen the former.

Terry McAuliffe, Democrat political hack and corrupt fundraising crony of the Clintons, has just been elected governor of Virginia. He defeated (barely) a man with a solid record as a defender of First Principles, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. Outspent by $15 million, Cuccinelli managed to tighten the race to within 2 percent after having trailed by 20 points a few weeks ago. Meanwhile, a Libertarian candidate with no chance of winning, and whose biggest contributor was a former “bundler” for Barack Obama, pulled 8 precious points away from Cuccinelli. Wouldn’t fellow Virginians George Washington and Thomas Jefferson be proud?

Looking northward, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie cruised to a double-digit re-election victory, thereby kicking off his 2016 presidential campaign. No doubt Karl Rove and other GOP consultants will point to this race and contrast it with what happened in Virginia. “See,” they will say, “nominate a Tea Party crazy and you will lose; nominate a reasonable ‘moderate’ and you will win!” Translation: Nominate a principled conservative who actually stands for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and we, the Republican political ruling class, will withhold our support; nominate a moderate blowhard who can be swayed on key social and fiscal issues and we will help him or her win!” How exciting for the future of the Republican Party and for the country.

Obamacare is in the news daily. What few people are talking about is the fact that the program is simply a huge recruiting and voter registration scheme for the Democrat Party. Planned Parenthood fanatics and former ACORN activists are being employed by the Obama administration as “navigators” to aid prospective enrollees in Obamacare. While “assisting” them in doing so, they also will be registering new voters. Not a reassuring thought? Just wait until they pass amnesty.

The mayor of Toronto, North America’s fourth largest city, Rob Ford – who looks like a cross between Rush Limbaugh and Chris Farley – has a curiously direct manor: “Yes, I smoked crack cocaine but it was during one of my drunken stupors.” Perhaps Obama could employ that sort of candor when attempting to explain his promises about Obamacare: “Sure I promised you could keep your doctor and your policy, but I was drunk at the time. Or maybe I was high. I can’t remember.”

Our federal government spent hundreds of millions of dollars over three and a half years to produce a useless, insecure portal for the American people to sign up for a health care plan they didn’t want but are now being forced to buy. Tennessee State Senator Brian Kelsey highlighted the insanity of all this the other day simply by handing U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius a copy of “Web Sites for Dummies.” She immediately handed it off to an aide – but not before a photographer captured the classic image.

Finally, on a more serious note, the “epidemic” of bullying over which so many Americans are wringing their hands has moved from the playground and the Facebook page to the National Football league. Having witnessed kids standing up to bullies when I was in school back in the 1960s, it is hard to have a lot of sympathy for a 24-year-old, 6-foot 5-inch, 312-pound offensive tackle who is being “bullied.”

I am more concerned with the lonely 14-year-old girl who commits suicide because her self-esteem derives almost exclusively from what her classmates post on the Internet. Among the many questions we, as a society, have to ask are these: When will parents begin to monitor and restrict their children’s activity online? And, perhaps more importantly, when will we stop teaching our precious children that they are merely highly evolved animals with no greater value than a frog or a tree and allow them to rediscover the wonderful reality that they are made in the image of God, Who loves them and Who thought so highly of them that He sent His only Son to die for them?
