Democrat Senator Suggests First Amendment Does Not Apply to Individuals

Disingenuous authoritarians will sometimes pretend that the Second Amendment does not honor an individual right to bear arms, but only a group right — that is, only well-regulated militias have a right to bear arms. Why stop at the Second Amendment? Publicly homosexual Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) wants to use the same fallacy to destroy what’s left of the First:

Baldwin said she thinks that business owners, like those that own a bakery, should not be allowed to turn down serving homosexuals gay wedding cakes because of religious beliefs because businesses like that are not considered institutions of faith.

“Certainly the first amendment says that in institutions of faith that there is absolute power to, you know, to observe deeply held religious beliefs. I don’t think it extends far beyond that. We’ve seen the set of arguments play out in issues such as access to contraception. Should it be the individual pharmacist whose religious beliefs guides whether a prescription is filled, or in this context, they’re talking about expanding this far beyond our churches and synagogues to businesses and individuals across this country. I think there are clear limits that have been set in other contexts and we ought to abide by those in this new context across America.”

In other words: maybe a church has a First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion, but that doesn’t mean you do.

Individual liberty is the bedrock principle upon which this nation was founded, and the reason it grew to be strong. Liberal utopia cannot be achieved until it has been eradicated.

If progressives were more patient, they wouldn’t bother gutting the First Amendment. After another generation of liberal control of education, no one will know what it says anyway. Already only 19% know that the First Amendment secures our right to freedom of religion.
