Just Wait Til You Hear The Reason This Florida Town is Punishing a Couple for Feeding The Homeless

Liberals like to paint themselves as compassionate crusaders for the poor and downtrodden, but it doesn’t really count as compassion when they absolutely refuse to do any charitable work of their own and prefer that the government mandate compulsory giving. It’s this kind of attitude that led to one couple being fined for feeding the homeless:

Meet Chico and Debbie Jimenez, a middle aged couple — and dangerous criminals, according to the city of Daytona Beach, Florida. Their crime? They fed the homeless every Wednesday in Manatee Island Park in Daytona Beach.

Last Wednesday Chico and Debbie, along with four of their volunteers, were issued citations for $375 a piece, and they were permanently banned from the park. Officers also told the Jimenezes that they were not to feed the homeless again in Daytona Beach.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports on why the police have cracked down on the Jimenezes:

The citations and trespass warnings against Chico and Debbie Jimenez and their volunteers are part of an increased effort by the police to discourage Good Samaritans from steering homeless people away from the agencies set up to provide the same services. It’s part of the city’s and county’s broader effort to eventually centralize homeless services.

“The ordinance is there, so if we catch you, we’re going to cite you,” Police Chief Mike Chitwood said Thursday. “If you want to feed people, and you want to do a good, Christian act, we encourage you to coordinate with the social service agencies.”

So private citizens should refrain from doing something good for their fellow man, to help people who need it, because it might make those people less likely to apply for welfare and become utterly dependent on the government to take care of them. And God knows we can’t have people pulling themselves out of the grips of poverty, and especially not with the help of charitable-minded Americans — after all, that could mean that the government won’t have complete control over those people. That would truly be a nightmare, right?
