Nature can be beautiful, but it can also be terrifying. One couple learned this lesson firsthand, when they narrowly escaped not just one, but two avalanches.

A Tacoma, Washington couple escaped one avalanche, then is confronted by a second wall of tumbling snow. It happened at the Big Four Ice Caves near Lake Stevens on Saturday.

Colby Dotson shot video of the second avalanche that almost trapped him, his girlfriend Ashley Bechard and another couple they were with.

“We heard the noise and she was like ‘Avalanche!’ turned and just started running,” Dotson said. “I looked up and I felt just wind come across my face. And then I saw a bunch of snow starting to come down,” he continued.

“My heart was beating, my mind was racing, if it was going to cover us,” Dotson.

While he did get a thrilling video out of the ordeal, one does have to wonder at whether or not stopping to film an avalanche is really the best idea when you’re running for your life. But they got out alive and he got a viral video to boot, so in his case, it all worked out well.
