George Zimmerman Vs. Trayvon Martin

Sadly, when something like the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin case is pushed into the public eye, it tends to polarize people. That’s especially true in this case because so many of the early reports were lies driven by professional race hustlers who wanted to get their names in the news and fund raise off the case.

George Zimmerman[1]

Initially, people were given the impression that a racist, white neighborhood watch captain who uttered a racial slur followed little 12 year old Trayvon Martin and gunned him down for being black.

None of that turned out to be true.

Zimmerman is Hispanic, not white. He didn’t utter a racial slur and he doesn’t appear to be a racist. He also seems to have shot 17 year old Trayvon Martin, who was a football player, to death after Martin attacked him and started pounding his head into the pavement.

Does this mean Zimmerman is the good guy and Martin was the bad guy?

Actually, it’s a lot more ambiguous than that.

Martin wasn’t the angelic little kid his supporters have portrayed him as, but to the best of anyone’s knowledge, he doesn’t seem to have been doing anything wrong. He was just walking home and was JUSTIFIABLY alarmed by having a man he didn’t know follow him. At this point, it looks like Martin then made a bad decision. Instead of just talking to Zimmerman, he attacked him. Given the circumstances, that seems to have been a foolish, but understandable choice for a 17 year old kid who may have thought he was in danger.

On the other hand, after the break-ins in the area, Zimmerman had good reason to be suspicious of someone he didn’t know walking between houses in the area. Arguably, he shouldn’t have followed Martin, but even if he did, it wouldn’t have justified an attack on him by Martin.

From there, it appears that Martin was on top of Zimmerman pounding his head on the ground, Zimmerman became justifiably afraid for his life and then he shot Martin.

If that’s what happened, this isn’t a crime; it’s a tragedy.

People aren’t looking at it that way because they tend to identify with different people in this saga. Black Americans who have been told the country is racist put themselves in Martin’s place. They imagine just walking along and having someone shoot them because they look suspicious. On the other hand, many white Americans believe Zimmerman was just defending himself and he’s on trial for racial reasons, not because he did anything wrong. In a time when many white Americans feel like they’re automatically judged as wrong and racist in any conflict with a black American because they’re white, Caucasians tend to identify with Zimmerman who appears to be facing 2nd degree murder changes right now because he’s the wrong race.

So, what happens if, as expected, George Zimmerman is found innocent of 2nd degree murder? Will Barack Obama’s Department of Justice trump up some federal charges against Zimmerman? Will George Zimmerman have to go into hiding to keep from being murdered? Will there be riots in the streets?

We’ll see, but it’s too bad that instead of uniting Americans in sadness about a tragic loss of life, this case was turned into a way to tear people apart.
