Retired Cop Spots Baby Locked In Hot Car. When He Sees Her Eyes Roll Back, Grabs Sledgehammer [VIDEO]

As the summer temperatures become blistering hot, so do the numbers of child deaths[1]. The summer months bring dangers that are more common than many believe.

Among those dangers is the acrid heat that a simple parked car can hold. If you have entered a parked car that has been sitting in the sun for a long time, then you understand.

Imagine being trapped in a car that was rapidly rising in temperature and not having the capabilities to free yourself. Well, that’s what many children have to endure and even die from as a result of their parent’s carelessness.

Recently, a 4 month-old baby girl was a victim of this awful decision. Thank goodness she is alive and well due to the the quick thinking of one good Samaritan.

A retired police officer came to the rescue when he was passing through a Kohl’s parking lot and overheard Sarah Mazzone, 30, of Howell, yell, “Oh my God!” Upon further inquiry, his fears were confirmed.

An infant was there in a locked car with all of the windows rolled up. Zero ventilation, alone, on an 80-degree day. With the sun beating down, it’s not hard to image how the heat in the car must have been amplified.

Steve Eckel knew he had to do something to save the baby. He could see that she was really miserable being stuck in a heated death trap.

Eckel could see that the poor baby’s face was bright red and things were only going to get worse if he didn’t act fast.

“She was sweating, crying, eyes rolling back,” he claimed.

It was then that Eckel remembered that he had a sledgehammer in his car, he knew that was the tool that would save that baby. He ran to his car to recover his hammer.

He used it to smash the window and snatched up the baby from the car seat. Eckel carried the baby inside the store so she could cool down to her normal body temperature in the air conditioning.

The retired cop is so thankful that he was able to be there at the right time to save the baby’s life.

“I do believe in guardian angels and I think I’m the one for this child.”
