HORROR: Here’s What ISIS Just Did to the Newly Crowned Miss Iraq

For the first time in 40 years[1], a new Miss Iraq has been crowned. Shaima Qassem Abdulrahman, who is a 20 year-old economics major, is the first to be crowned there since 1972. Why they started the pageant back up again in the war-torn, conservative Muslim nation is a good question, but it is a sign of freedom and perhaps that was the whole point. After winning, Shaima got a very disturbing call from ISIS telling her to join ISIS or she would be kidnapped and forced to submit. Many of the girls dropped out of the race after receiving similar messages and even threats of death. This is the hold that ISIS now has on Iraq.

From Michele Hickford/Allen West:

Beauty queens have been suffering in the news lately. First, Miss Colombia was crowned and then de-crowned[3]when Steve Harvey mistakenly named her as the winner at the Miss Universe pageant.

Then Miss Puerto Rico was forced to step down[4] after posting tweets supportive of Donald Trump and criticizing Muslims.

But that’s nothing compared to what Miss Iraq is having to endure.

Shaima Qassem Abdulrahman, a 20-year-old economics student is the first woman to be crowned Miss Iraq since 1972, winning the contest on Saturday.

But on Tuesday, she received a phone call telling her to join the ranks of ISIS or she will be kidnapped, according to a report by the Kuwaiti daily al-Watan.

“Iraq needed this,” pageant director Ahmed Leith said. “The situation is weak here, and we wanted to celebrate this the same way other countries like Lebanon and others do. To have a sense of normalcy.” The pageant website and its Facebook page were inundated with death threats against the women — so much so that the nearly 200 participants dropped to less than 10. It takes a lot of courage to continue your dream in the face of such violence. This is a very brave young woman. “I want to prove that the Iraqi woman has her own existence in society, she has her rights like men,” Shaima Qassem Abdulrahman told NBC News. “I am afraid of nothing, because I am confident that what I am doing is not wrong.” You may not care for beauty pageants, but this one was an act of freedom and defiance. In my book, that’s a winner.
