NFL prospect Laremy Tunsil arrested for punching his stepfather to protect his mother

This is an instance[1] of a talented NFL prospect doing what was needed and what was right regardless of the personal cost he might pay. He is a good son and his mother is blessed to have him as a son. He also did this on a healing broken leg and a dislocated ankle. And then Laremy Tunsil went and turned himself in of his own volition. I’m impressed. Not only did he do the right and brave thing, he has a brain. Hopefully, his stepfather got a lesson he won’t soon forget. You don’t beat on Laremy Tunsil’s mom, unless you want to go through him.

From the Daily Mail:

University of Mississippi football coach Hugh Freeze confirmed Saturday that offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil has been arrested in a domestic violence case involving his stepfather in Oxford.

Freeze issued a statement Saturday saying that Tunsil turned himself in and was booked by police with misdemeanor domestic violence-simple assault.

The incident happened Thursday night. Freeze said Tunsil was defending his mother against his stepfather and that Tunsil and his mother have pressed charges against the stepfather.

‘We can confirm that Laremy Tunsil turned himself in and was arrested for a misdemeanor, domestic violence-simple assault,’ Freeze said in a statement provided to ESPN[3]. ‘The incident occurred Thursday night and involves Laremy defending his mother against his stepfather.

‘Laremy realizes he could have handled it differently, but I am proud of him for standing up for his mother and protecting his family. Laremy and his mother have also pressed charges against the stepfather. As we gather more facts, we will act and make decisions accordingly.’

A person who answered the telephone at the Oxford Police Department could not immediately confirm the arrest.

Oxford police chief Joey East did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Tunsil, a junior who earned All-SEC honors in 2013, is recovering from a broken leg and dislocated ankle suffered in December in a Peach Bowl loss to TCU.

Both Tunsil and his mom have filed charges against the stepfather. Good. I can’t believe Laremy was charged with domestic violence when he was simply protecting his mother. That seems unjust and out of line to me. I wonder what exactly happened there – it must have been violent for Laremy to jump in physically to protect his mother. Here’s to Laremy getting back to the sport he loves soon and to his mom moving on to a better life. That’s one heroic boy on and off the field and there are great things in his future.
