The Dignity Of The Undignified

One lesser-known fact about the upcoming Sequester cuts is that it includes a pay cut for Congress.:  This, without a doubt, is a good thing, if only because, despite their near constant bickering about how the other side needs to be more bipartisan, both Houses of Congress have proven to be utter failures during Barack Obama’s presidency.

Our nation has not had a budget for almost four straight years now, a failure that primarily lies at the feet of the Democrat-controlled Senate.:  Congress’s debt commission failed to identify sufficient cuts to avoid triggering Sequestration, which has landed us into the current manufactured crisis.:  After all, back in 2011, everyone was in agreement that we needed to cut federal spending, and that is what directly led to President Obama’s plan for sequestration – a bipartisan group of Congressmen were supposed to put their heads together and identify programs that could be cut in order to reduce the federal deficit.:  The problem with this scheme was that the Democrats in the group would never agree to cut anything, so they inevitably failed.

Sequester was supposed to be the teeth behind that bill – Congress could either choose specific cuts, or we would get the broad-based Sequester that President Obama proposed would kick in, and the cuts would be forced…even though, in reality, sequestration is really just a reduction in the rate at which government spending increases – it doesn’t actually cut anything.

But the provision of Sequester that Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has taken issue with is the pay cut that will be foisted upon Congress.:  According to San Fran Nan, “I think it’s necessary for us to have the dignity of the job that we have rewarded.”

Get this: Nancy Pelosi thinks that cutting Congress’s pay undermines the dignity of the job that Congress has done – despite the fact that the only reason sequestration is kicking in is because Congress didn’t do their jobs with the initial spending cuts.

Here’s a better idea, Congresswoman Pelosi: How about encouraging other members of your party to do their jobs by supporting and defending the Constitution, cutting unnecessary and unconstitutional government programs, targeting wasteful spending, and making our government more lean and efficient.

But this is the same Nancy Pelosi who said that our federal government doesn’t have a spending problem.:  With statements like that, there is no dignity left in Congress anymore.:  The fact that we pay them at all is almost criminal.
