Another Obama White House Lie About Islam
Written By : Warner Todd Huston

Remember that iftar dinner the president sponsored? The dinner that got him in trouble because he came out in strong support of the mega-mosque at Ground Zero, support from which he backed away the very next day? Well, it turns out he delivered another blatant lie at that dinner, one that slipped under the radar because his support of the Ground Zero Mosque was so controversial.

In his remarks at the iftar observance, Obama claimed that the “first” iftar dinner in the White House was hosted by Thomas Jefferson.

Tonight, we are reminded that Ramadan is a celebration of a faith known for great diversity. And Ramadan is a reminder that Islam has always been part of America. The first Muslim ambassador to the United States, from Tunisia, was hosted by President Jefferson, who arranged a sunset dinner for his guest because it was Ramadan—making it the first known iftar at the White House, more than 200 years ago.

In this way, Obama tried to make it seem as if the United States has respected Islam since the early Republic and has observed its celebrations for two hundred years. But this is a major stretching of the truth. Thomas Jefferson did not hold an “iftar” dinner, unless you might call the dinner Obama references “iftar by default.”

Naturally, the left-wing Old Media took Obama’s blatant misconstruction of historical events and went even farther down the road of untruths and lies. The New York Times published a story the next day referencing Jefferson’s mythical iftar dinner and made of it a “White House tradition”!

In hosting the iftar, Mr. Obama was following a White House tradition that, while sporadic, dates to Thomas Jefferson, who held a sunset dinner for the first Muslim ambassador to the United States. President George W. Bush hosted iftars annually.

What tosh. There has never been a tradition of iftar dinners at the White House, sporadic or otherwise, until after the year 1992. Jefferson’s dinner was no iftar dinner and no other president until Bill Clinton even hosted one. We have a “tradition” of exactly three presidents holding iftar dinners, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and now Barack Obama. Not much of a tradition that.

So what of this claim of Jefferson’s iftar dinner? As Jihad Watch informs us, there never really was one. The truth is that in 1805 Jefferson invited to a dinner at the White House one Sidi Soliman Melli Melli, the diplomatic envoy that the Bey of Tunis sent to Washington. The time set for this dinner was 3:30 PM, the normal time that everyone then ate dinner in those days. Since it was Ramadan, however, the envoy informed Jefferson that he could not attend until the sun went down because he was observing his fasting ritual.

Jefferson then offered to push his dinner hour until the sun went down as a courtesy to his invited guest. It was as simple as that. There was no mention of any iftar anything. President Jefferson simply moved the hour of dinner to suit the envoy. There was no change to what was served in order to suit Muslim needs, there was no acknowledgement of the Muslim faith, and no observance of any “iftar” dinner. Jefferson was just being a nice guy.

And of this historical incident, Obama and his cohorts in the left-wing, Old Media have created a mythical “sporadic tradition.” But for Obama and the New York Times to mislead the American people into imagining that the White House has celebrated iftar all the way back to 1805 is simply a straight out lie.

    Mr. Huston,

Wouldn't it be much simpler to only report on stories where Obama actually told the truth about something?

Obama lying on any subject is no longer news.

  • http://conservativebootcamp.com Martin Hale

One wonders if the menu from Jefferson's dinner still exists in some mouldy box of records somewhere. The contents of that menu might shine a light of reality on how committed to the principles of iftar Jefferson was. Presence of dates in the appetizer course would surely be indicative of a commitment to iftar since that's the food item traditionally eaten first following Maghrib. Certainly, the presence of any non-halal foodstuffs on the menu would pretty well dispel the notion that Jefferson's dinner was indeed intended to serve as a celebration of iftar.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

If eating late on Ramadan is an iftar does that mean anyone who eats dinner on passover is holding a Seder?

  • UFKA_Smithwick

That would kill this site. There would be nothing at all to talk about, other than perhaps his off the cuff comments on the weather (maybe).

  • Mahatma

Seems like there is a lot of fibbing going around. Didn't Glen Beck recently get busted for lying about handling the original inaugural address of George Washington? Just sayin'.

  • http://conservativebootcamp.com Martin Hale

I admit it – I have no idea whatsoever what your comment has to do with any of the ideas I presented in my original comment. Of course it really doesn't bother me all that much, since my expectations of your being able to engage in relevant discussion are pretty darn low. Much of what you post here is about your own agenda items, not about engaging in any sort of dialogue, and I'd warrant that this is just another one of them.

    Cheers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jayhoffer Justin Hoffer

    Very, VERY good comparison! *applause*

  • http://www.facebook.com/jayhoffer Justin Hoffer

“Lie” is the root of “lieberal”, so did you really expect anything different?

  • Tom_pinko_Delay

This proves it's only a matter of time before we have Sharia law here in the States.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

Nah, the dems will be out of power next election cycle, and Obama will only be a one-termer.

You'll have to wait a little longer I'm afraid.

Although I really don't get the desire so many liberals have to see this come to pass. You do know that they won't make exceptions for their useful dhimmis?

  • Mahatma

My statement was meant in reply to stanley. Apologies for the misplacement.

    Ma'a Salaama

  • UFKA_Smithwick

But even halal items wouldn't prove anything. That would simply mean he was being a polite host.

Providing a guest to your house with the foods to which he is accustomed is not the same as endorsing or even tolerating that persons religion. It simply means you take hospitality seriously, which is a good thing but hardly makes this the worlds largest muslim nation as Obama would like to claim.

  • Tom_pinko_Delay

Although I really don't get the desire so many liberals have to see this come to pass.

I don't know where the figments of your imagination come from either.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

You do know George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are two different people, and we are not talking about Beck here?

  • whats_up

Yes the double standard is interesting isnt it?

  • UFKA_Smithwick

Oh if only you people were figments of my imagination. I would sleep better knowing you weren't real.

  • whats_up

Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and now Barack Obama. Not much of a tradition that.

Kind of similar to that “tradition” of holding a breakfast for the National Day of Prayer that only George W. Bush made a yearly tradition while in the White House. Yet Conservatives howled when it wasnt done under Obama. Not much a tradition that.

  • http://conservativebootcamp.com Martin Hale

Oh, so you're telling me that figuring out the right place to post replies is just one more thing you can't get right. I understand. It's tough keeping all those “big boy” things straight. Of course that doesn't quite explain your failure to use the edit function to rectify the circumstance, but we'll leave that topic for another day.

  • StanW

Probably from the noise that comes from Liberals when they classify anything and everything a Muslim does as “Religious Freedom”.

And it is hardly imagination, Pinko!

  • TheDickNixon

David Duke. Bush. 2004. Your lack of proof.

  • Jane

No Iftar Dinner! Sort of like the WMD-Iraq myth.

  • Huron Voyager

Not much difference between that and the laws that Evangelicals or Palin/Beck would want.

  • StanW

How so, Huron? Do Beck/Palin/Evangelicals call for honor killings or stoning or subjugation of other religions?

    Yeah, that's what I thought.

  • Tom_pinko_Delay

Eh, that's not really true. The point I was making was that people who think sharia is coming here are both paranoid and delusional. Palin or Beck advocate stoning for adultery. And any Evangelical who is off their rocker enough to ban dancing or whatever won't gain any larger traction here either, because the American people at large realize that they are teetering on the deep end as well.

  • http://www.patriotpost.com bthewolf

But in over 200 years of a Christian majority in this country haven't proposed, passed, or even mentioned. H_Stupidity fails again.

  • Huron Voyager

“Kneecapping Barack Obama at every opportunity.”

    Checkmate.

Do you revel in your stupidity and ignorance?

  • http://www.patriotpost.com bthewolf

    Racist fail!

  • Mr. EMT

You fail to differentiate between the idea of America becoming ruled by sharia law, when the reality is that there is an attempt to push sharia on Americans.

I don't think sharia will become a reality either.
I got too many bullets, same as a couple hundred thousand other people like me.

  • http://www.patriotpost.com bthewolf

The phrase is 'figurative' not literal, IDIOT!!

    EPIC FAIL!!! Again.

  • Mr. EMT

Didn't you recently comment about your belief that our troops deserve being killed by taliban and other “freedom fighters?”
    Just sayin, your a Traitor.

  • Mr. EMT

“we have seen and held the authentic true copy of the original birth certificate, and here is a picture of it”

  • Mr. EMT

Checkmating yourself again and saving everyone else the work of even making an opening move.
Maybe you should actually learn how to play the game before presenting yourself as an authority. People might take longer than five seconds to realize what a drooling feeble minded slobbering retard you are.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

    Two key differences:

    1) they aren't actually pushing hard for evangelical law like they are for sharia (already the de facto law in many regions of the western world) and 2) no one screams racism or bigotry when radical Christians get shut down by the law or protesters.

    Protest a mosque = bigot.
Burn a church = freedom fighter.

  • mightysamurai

Heh. So you think John follows Obama around whacking him in the knees with a blunt instrument or something?

I knew you were stupid, but I didn't think you were that stupid.

  • Mr. EMT

Thats ok, considering you have pieces of shit for brains, it is no wonder that you are unable to deal with reality, or as you call it, “figments of someone elses imagination.”

I would say you have your head in the sand to not be able to deal with reality with such an escapism mentality, but we all know where you keep your head buried. You enjoy the feeling of your rectum stretched around your neck too much to just bury your head in sand.

  • TheDickNixon

Where is the FBI? Or your “Canadian Soldier”?

  • UFKA_Smithwick

Go back a hundred years and tell the average european that at some point in their future large enclaves of their various countries will be ruled over by muslims, police and natives will be afraid to go there for fear of being murdered, muslims will riot on a regular basis in their streets, and de facto shariah will be declared in those enclaves (as the police are unwilling to intervene and politicians too terrified of being labeled racist to mention the problem) and they would have laughed their asses off at you. You would be ignored as a paranoid delusional idiot.

    You'd also be right.

  • Tom_pinko_Delay

So you think Americans are spineless and weak?

    Duly noted.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

Sadly we are very decent people actually. This is sad because it makes it easy for the left, with its total domination of the media and education, to manipulate the average american in to acting a certain way based on guilt. Evil people don't feel guilt, only good folks do, which is also one of our weaknesses.

It's how you got an otherwise good people to support affirmative action, and work against profiling in airports even though that has cost lives. It's the basis for the fight against enforcing immigration laws, and for rewriting history.

Europeans were once a fairly strong people, patriotic and willing to fight. It only took a few generations for your ideological kin to chip away at them.

Granted it will take longer here, and require more efforts and a unique approach. But it is certainly not impossible.

  • TheDickNixon

Your side of the aisle is.

  • Fiza1

Thank you, Mr. Huston, for pointing us to and summarizing the nice “story” in “Jihad Watch”. The writer of the Jhad Watch” article (Hugh) provides us with some backround on Sidi Soliman Melli Melli from the “Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia”. The “backround is indented, but without quotes, so I assume it is a quote from “Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia”. Does the indented backround info from the “Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia” say anything about Jefferson's dinner with Melli? NOPE, NOT A WORD! Here is what “Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia” says:

“Despite whispers regarding his conduct, Mellimelli received invitations to numerous dinners and balls, and according to one Washington hostess was “the lion of the season.” At the president's New Year's Day levee the Tunisian envoy provided “its most brilliant and splendid spectacle,” and added to his melodramatic image at a later dinner party hosted by the secretary of state.”

Next the “Jhad Watch” author apparently provides his own version of the Jefferson dinner for Melli during Ramadan in quotes below:

“He (Melli) replied that he could not come at the hour set, that is, at half-past three, but only after sundown.Jefferson, a courteous man, simply moved the dinner forward by a few hours.

He didn't change the menu, he didn't change anything else. And moving the dinner forward by a few hours hardly turns that dinner into a soi-disant “Iftar Dinner.”

Just how does the “Jhad Watch” writer know the details he claims? Any references? NOPE! Is the “Jihad Watch story” of Jefferson's dinner for Melli any better than Obama's? NOPE, It is just another “story”! Maybe just the “Jihad Watch” writer's IMAGINATION!

  • Fiza1

I am sure there was a store just down the street that sold halal foods, like dates. If not, Jefferson's head chef should have been able to properly slaughter a lamb and whip up some good ol halal food. If not, maybe he could have consulted one of the slaves who came from a Moslem father and still, despite being saved by Christianity, recalled Muslem customs.

  • Norseman

Amazing how a story about the White House lying about Islam was morphed into an attack on Beck and Palin. You would think that just once the leftist imbeciles that post on this site would admit that it is wrong to lie. They sure didn't mind crucifying GWB event though they had no proof. However, when proof of the white house lying hits them right in the kisser, their only defense is to steer the conversation to Palin and Beck. What is pitiful bunch of losers and mental midgets. I've said it before and I will say it again. The mental midgets on this site are the direct result of the theft of our education system by the left. They spit out zombies that have no concept of truth, justice, and the American way.

  • http://www.patriotpost.com bthewolf

So where's the proof that was an Iftar dinner per Jefferson? Neither Odrama, the Slimes, nor you have any proof that it was an Iftar.

“Mellimelli was in Washington during Ramadan, a month-long period in which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. To accommodate his guest’s religious obligation, Jefferson’s invitation to the President’s House on December 9 changed the time of dinner from the usual “half after three” to “precisely at sunset.” ” http://wiki.monticello.org/mediawiki/index.php/Tunisian_Envoy

So the jihadwatch writer's 'story' is far more accurate than Odrama's since there is no mention of calling this an Iftar, or that anything else was changed about the dinner excepts it's time. Nice try fizzle, but there is NO evidence Jefferson hosted and Iftar dinner, none.

  • StanW

Excuse me, I didn;t say or imply anything about kneecapping Obama, nor does that have anything at all to do with religious oppression.

That is, unless you consider Obama your diety, Huron!

  • Meekrob

Wow, that's some weapons-grade stupid there, Canucklehead.

  • Meekrob

    You're an idiot.

    Uno.

  • Meekrob

Probably not, in either case. Lefticles are quite stupid after all.

  • Huron Voyager

It was part of Cold War politics, like adding Under God to the pledge of allegiance.

    Cold War is over, jackass.

  • Martha

    LOL

    *golf clap*

  • Martha

    Prove it!

  • Martha

As the definition of Iftar is: “A meal served at the end of the day during Ramadan, to break the day's fast. Literally, “breakfast.”

And as Thomas Jefferson expressly changed the timing of his usual meal for this exact purpose, the meal which Jefferson served was an Iftar.

Now, why can't we all be happy and sing “Tradition” from “Fiddler On The Roof”?

  • whats_up

bthewolf, are you stupid or just ignorant. Notice I said “breakfast” at the White House. I am very aware of Truman signing a day for the National Day of Prayer. Obama has in his two years also signed two proclamtions for the National Day of Prayer, he just didnt have the breakfast at the White House. You do understand what breakfast is…

  • whats_up

LMAO, Love it, LOVE.IT, keep it up birther, keep it up, makes you look more foolish every day.

  • StanW

What was served at the meal, Martha? Woudl it still be an Iftar if Pork was served? What if Jeffersons dogs were allowed to run through the house during the mean? Still an Iftar?

Do you seriously want to continue proving your idiocy to us all?

  • TheDickNixon

    yep the good guys won

  • TheDickNixon

Did David Duke eat Breakfast with Bush in 2004?

  • http://www.patriotpost.com bthewolf

Prove what? If it's not fgurative then somebody must have attempted it by now, it's not like that hasn't been up since late 2007!!! So where are those attackers with baseball bats???

  • http://www.patriotpost.com bthewolf

    Deflection fail.

  • http://www.patriotpost.com bthewolf

    Yeah I missed it.

But Odrama did nothing to honor the National Day of Prayer, aside from those proclamations. That's what we complained about, not just the missing breakfast.

  • whats_up

So what, Presidents before him also had done nothing or almost nothing. In 8 years Reagan only held one event, in 4 years Bush the elder only one. Where is it madated that the President must hold an event outside of the proclamations?

  • mightysamurai

I'm glad you've finally come around and admitted that the “No WMDs in Iraq!” meme is a total myth.

  • Martha

And . . . you can't prove it. That is all.

  • DrEvil

Using that sort of “logic”(?) every dinner served on the third (fourth this year) Thursday in November is a Thanksgiving meal, and any meal served on July 4th is a celebration of American Independence, and every dinner served on December 25th is Christmas dinner.

    Have an Evil day

  • Martha

It was a “specific” meal, Evil, postponed and then presented at a specific time for a specific reason.

  • Martha

What if Allah came down and sat at the right hand of Jefferson and turned water into wine? What then – huh?

  • StanW

What if Achmed the Dead Terrorist and Bugs Bunny appeared in the flesh (and Bones) and told you to worship Sarah Palin as your one true God, what then… HUH?

    Idiot!

  • Martha

It is all as possible as your first comment, stan. Idiot U indeed R.

  • StanW

I understand, Martha. You may go now.

  • http://www.wordaroundthenet.com Christopher Taylor

That reason being “to have dinner with an Envoy.” His argument stands: ever meal eaten on Thanksgiving Dinner according to YOUR logic is a thanksgiving dinner

  • http://www.wordaroundthenet.com Christopher Taylor

Given that Jefferson was a pretty big diplomatic type, he probably tried to keep the food along lines that the envoy could eat, but didn't make a special Muslim meal.

  • http://www.wordaroundthenet.com Christopher Taylor

Did he? I don't watch Glen Beck, and he's not the president of the United States. You love and worship Obama but can't find fault with his lies, but some commenter somewhere says something you claim is wrong and you're all upset? Pathetic.

  • AF_Vet

    Proof, dumbass.

    Otherwise, STFU.

  • TheDickNixon

Speaking of muslims, lifted from Ace of Spades HQ:

“One of the key players in Sharif El-Gamal's Mosque near Ground Zero is Egyptian born businessman, Hisham Elzanaty. Fox 5 News has learned exclusively and confirmed with Mr. Elzanaty’s attorney that Elzanaty made a “significant investment” in the development of the mosque near Ground Zero.

Fox 5 News has also learned that in 1999 Hisham Elzanaty sent money to an organization that would later be deemed by the U.S. government to be a terrorist group.

The organization was the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, also known as HLF. The now defunct group’s 1999 tax records show Elzanaty contributed more than $6,000 to HLF.

Two years later, in 2001, HLF was shut down by the federal government and designated as a global terrorist. After a mistrial in 2007, in 2008 five HLF leaders were convicted of providing material support to Hamas.”

Remember what Nixon said, these people have the right to build their mosque on their property. IF ANY FUNDS COME FROM TERRORISTS OR TERRORIST ENABLERS, BURN THE PLACE TO THE GROUND.

    Sparky time.

  • TheDickNixon

No need to put quotation marks around Jihad Watch fiza, it's the name of a website that details all about the pagan religion islam.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

Because the guest of honor wouldn't eat until then.

It would be kind of awkward to schedule a dinner when you know your quest will not be eating, kind of defeats the whole point of a dinner.

No different than rearranging your schedule around any other previously scheduled event.

If he had had a dentist appointment at that time and Jefferson moved the time out of consideration I wouldn't say that Jefferson worshiped dentists, or had any particular affinity for them.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

Then I imagine our history would have turned out far differently.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

    “Checkmate”

Do you mean a literal checkmate? Because this isn't a game of chess.

Or is that an expression used to mean something other than the literal definition?
