Anti-War Teachers Disrupt Recognition of Military-Minded Students

Last week two Massachusetts High School teachers took it upon themselves to protest against the U.S. Military as students that had announced plans to join our armed forces were receiving recognition from their school. Incensed students and parents called for the teachers to be fired.

History teacher Marybeth Verani and English teacher Adeline Koscher raised signs protesting the military during the June 11 ceremony at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School interrupting the proceedings and angering the parents and their students that were being recognized.

Students were upset that these teachers decided to impose their anti-American, anti-Military view on the room full of attendees during a time meant to celebrate the student’s efforts to serve their country.

Andrew Bowles Jr., a junior at the school, told reporters afterward, “They not only imposed their political will, they imposed it at the wrong time.”

A parent, Joanne Schuman of Yarmouth, thought that the teachers would have been removed from the event.

With this attempt to get their 15 minutes of fame these two selfish teachers decided to put the spotlight upon themselves detracting from the students’ moment of recognition.

To make matters worse, in the audience was the parent of a soldier killed in action in Afghanistan. In attendance was Yarmouth police Lt. Steven Xiarhos, whose son, U.S. Marine Cpl. Nicholas Xiarhos, was lost in action in 2009. This man who lost his son in service to our country was forced to sit through these teacher’s outrageous intrusion as his own son was celebrated for his service.

These left-wing activists should be fired for their disruption of the ceremony meant to recognize the selfless students that had elected to join our military. There are certainly times to discuss current events, but an award ceremony is not one of those times.

It is plain that these two fools were only trying to get into the news. With that they succeeded. Let us hope that their efforts get them fired, never to teach again.

    Wow, I wonder why they think U.S. military service is bad? Because the U.S. is not worth defending? They sound like Ward Churchill and Noam Chomsky wannabes. Makes you wonder what goes on in their classrooms.

        The pendulum has swung waaaay left and it's swathing the young people who do have respect and honor for our country. In each of our communities we must celebrate – more than ever – the fourth of July and honor the serving and those who have fallen protecting our Great nation whose constitution invokes the blessing of a good and gracious God. Nature resounds the protection of the innocent and preservation of ordered behavior – why must we decline from these strengths?

        Or you know, advise them not to do it again and explain why their behavior was unacceptable.

        Consider they were having a ceremony to celebrate how many of their minority students were going to graduate this year compared to last and move on to college. And the teachers took that as an opportunity to protest against affirmative action.

        Do you suppose your reaction and the left/media in general might have been slightly different?

        It wasnt that long ago geriatric citizens were denied the right to open prayer at their nutrition center due to the fact some of the funding for the center was federal money…
        Teachers are federally paid, and these two nimrods were abusing their first amendment right on school grounds to protest troops during a ceremony.
        The laws that protect your right to free speech, also have provisions that state there are times and places your free speech is not protected. Yelling fire in a crowded auditorium is the example.
        The right to peaceably assemble…?

        Umm I'm not seeing how the first amendment applies to these dumbasses.
        I do see how disturbing the peace can and should be though.
        Arrest them, fine them, let them go with the criminal record.
        If the school wants to keep them employed after that, parents should also have the right to go to another school… however we know obamao does not want that, and is why he is anti voucher program.

    Hey teachers, you want to know a really great time and place to protest the war/military? Go to soldiers funerals, that will really show the world what free thinkers you are.

    There's another group called the westboro baptist church that has the same schtick. You could sign on with them. Don't worry about the “church” thing. They hate the US and the military as much as you do.

      Depends on what the schools dress code says about appropriate dress. It's not a matter of speech.

      And the protestors behavior is governed by the districts policy on what's appropiate behavior for teachers. They don't necessarily get full freedom of speech if they are at the event as employees of the school, dip shit. And protesting troops at an event meant to honor them is as anti-American as it gets, fool. It's as disrespectful of the troops as it of the country they about to serve. But then I don't expect a tool like you to understand that.

    Maybe I'm showing my age, but I long for a return to those days when families could have “personal moments” without having them persistently intruded upon by other people's politics.

    I know, I know – “the personal is the political” – yadda, yadda, yadda. Get over yourself and admit that politicising once personal events like weddings, funerals, graduations, etc, only serves to fragment our already fragmenting society even further.

    Which I suspect is precisely the point for tools like these two teachers.
