Breaking: Obama Defends Ground Zero Mosque as ‘The Writ of Our Founders’
Written By : Warner Todd Huston

-By Warner Todd Huston

We have finally heard the full and definitive take that President Obama has on the outrageous Ground Zero mosque project. He’s all for it.

During Obama’s Ramadan celebration dinner (called an Iftar dinner) Obama addressed the Ground Zero mosque.

Even as Obama claimed that he understood that Ground Zero was “hallowed ground” he went on to say that the Muslims may build their Mosque anywhere they want and we should let them because of it is in keeping with “the writ from our founders.”

Here are the relevant parts of the address (my bold for emphasis):

That is not to say that religion is without controversy. Recently, attention has been focused on the construction of mosques in certain communities – particularly in New York. Now, we must all recognize and respect the sensitivities surrounding the development of lower Manhattan. The 9/11 attacks were a deeply traumatic event for our country. The pain and suffering experienced by those who lost loved ones is unimaginable. So I understand the emotions that this issue engenders. Ground Zero is, indeed, hallowed ground.

But let me be clear: as a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances. This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakeable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are. The writ of our Founders must endure.

We must never forget those who we lost so tragically on 9/11, and we must always honor those who have led our response to that attack – from the firefighters who charged up smoke-filled staircases, to our troops who are serving in Afghanistan today. And let us always remember who we are fighting against, and what we are fighting for. Our enemies respect no freedom of religion. Al Qaeda’s cause is not Islam – it is a gross distortion of Islam. These are not religious leaders – these are terrorists who murder innocent men, women and children. In fact, al Qaeda has killed more Muslims than people of any other religion – and that list of victims includes innocent Muslims who were killed on 9/11.

    US Constitution – Amendment 1 – Ratified 12/15/1791.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

For the benefit of those who do not know, or who may not want to know, the above is, verbatim, the very first law of this nation, both in sequence and in importance. If any government ruling can deny the mosue, then that same ruling will eventually come back to affect every other unpopular opinion. This the principle that brought the Pilgrims here, the Catholics, the Evangelicals, the Mormons and many others. This is the right that our starving, freezing, barefoot army marched though hip deep snow to win. This is the law that men died at Iwo Jima to protect. The law that my best friend died at 17 years old in Korea to protect. This is what America is all about. If you do not trust our commitment to the right of religious freedom from governmental interference, maybe you should follow Mark Twain's advice to go to some other country where oppression is openly practiced as a matter of law and not the hypocracy of those who say they support freedom but want to deny it to anyone with whom the disagree.

    • http://twitter.com/warnerthuston warnerthuston

You do realize, though, we don't have “freedom of building.” Government may say what sort of building is suitable for what spot in their city.

      • Fiza1

Wow, I thought you didn't like government interference concerning private property. Remember when I asked you if it was OK for me to put a hog farm on a lot or two in a nice residential neighborhood, preferably next to your house?

        • Mr. EMT

Is it really that hard for your simian brain to grasp the logic required to understand why anyone would have an issue with a mosque being built on 911?
Apparently it is due to the fact you support terrorism, you support treason, you support islamist attacks on american soil and you rejoice at the deaths of three thousand people who died so much that you want a monument built for the world to see the victory you claim over 911.
This is your mentality, shared by al qaeda and taliban “freedom fighters” who rape and murder their own people, who celebrate Americans being mutilated, beheaded, at the destruction of other peoples way of life.
Your sick brain is so twisted that you want a monument to stand as a way to mark the milestone, just like the islamists who are pushing so hard to build a mosque there.

Try to deny it, but look around at the people who will see this mosque being built and will cheer. Look at the company you keep and do not expect us to view you as any different from them.

        • http://twitter.com/warnerthuston warnerthuston

Uh, I didn't say what I like or don't like. It is a FACT that gov't has that power.

    • freeman

The government is barred from banning the mosque, but 1st amendment also grants the people the right to protest the construction of the mosque. If you say they can't, then you're abridging their right to freedom of speech, assembly and press.

      • Rose

“A” mosque – not “THE” mosque – when they have a habit of building a WAR MEMORIAL MOSQUE at the site of THEIR aggressive jihadist Destruction, THAT IS NOT A RELIGIOUS BUILDING – that is WAR!

    • gfchicago

I don't believe anyone is suggesting that government step in and prevent that damn mosque being built. Rather we are asking that stupid Imam to have a little bit of sensitivity and do the right thing and not build it because it is so offensive to the rest of us. Not to mention the symbolism that would go along with the damn thing being built.

I don't think it was a coincidence that the first name that they picked out was the Cordoba House in reference to the mosque that they built when they conquered Spain.

      • Rose

I am asking the Govt to stop it on grounds that it has NO RELIGIOUS PURPOSE whatsoever – but is a WAR MEMORIAL IN TRIBUTE TO THEIR TERRORISTS – and AS SUCH has no RIGHT to be there.

      • Fiza1

“I don't think it was a coincidence that the first name that they picked out was the Cordoba House in reference to the mosque that they built when they conquered Spain.”

I assume you are referring to Gingrich's harrange about the proposed “Cordoba House”. Gingrich, who is supposed to be a former “history professor” was destroyed by a Yale history student here:

        gotmedieval.blogspot.com/2010/08/professor-newts-distorted-history.html

        • gfchicago

          That does not impress me.

BTW it's not just Newt saying this.

        • Mr. EMT

Gingrich is who you hide behind?
          What next, arlen spector?

So impressed with who you think represents “Right” minded people.

        • Rose

The Cordoba House of Spain was a War Memorial. Common to the islamic “faith” of Conquest.

GAZA OF AMERICA in imam Feisal Rauf's Malaysian Book Title states an anti-religious intent for the Cordoba House that does include a War College and ARMORY for use against AMERICA, from Ground Zero.

You have no Right to try to force America to ignore FACTS in favor of an Agenda of a STATED ENEMY to attack America Per public announcements in Foreign Nations!
THAT is Treason! If you are an American – still just as seriously a felony if you are NOT American.

    • Rose

You would have a point if this were about Freedom of Religion! But it ain't – any more than the Flight 93 Memorial being built as a Red Crescent with tribute Pagoda for the Flight 93 TERRORISTS, being built on the Flight 93 Crash Site by the Interior Dept is about “Freedom of Religion”.

      Everyone knows it.

They have no right to come in as “Conquering Heroes”, and we have no obligation to lay down and BE the Red Carpet for them to stomp on!

All Religions in America have NON-RELIGIOUS RESTRICTIONS and when the imam of the Cordoba House tells the Muslim World this is the GAZA OF AMERICA – you can CALL it anything you like, IT AIN'T ABOUT RELIGION!

    • Fiza1

“If you do not trust our commitment to the right of religious freedom from governmental interference, maybe you should follow Mark Twain's advice to go to some other country …”

      Good advice, Joehark!

      Here that Huston?

      • gfchicago

Evidently you still don't get it Fiza. No one is asking the government to get involved. We are simply asking this idiot Imam not to go ahead with his plans. It's like Freeman said.

The government is barred from banning the mosque, but 1st amendment also grants the people the right to protest the construction of the mosque. If you say they can't, then you're abridging their right to freedom of speech, assembly and press.

. What part of that don't you understand?

        • Mr. EMT

I certainly did not want the government involved.
However, too late, obamao involved the government by giving it his blessing, of course.
However, if we had someone such as Thomas Jefferson in office, the thought of the government getting involved over this would not have ever entered my mind.
Also, the threat of building a mosque would never have been placed on the table with someone like Jefferson leading the country.
However, here we are today with a leader who bows to tyranny and exposes us to our enemies with only apologies to defend ourselves with.

I say now as I have before, when New York allows this, the next time they get attacked they certainly BEGGED for it.

Oh, from what I have learned from watching islam in action, Asking them to do the honorable thing only encourages them to be dishonorable. Much like liberals who get along with them so well due to so many shared dishonorable and amoral behaviors.

      • Rose

Take that advice yourself, since you work to DISMANTLE the RELIGIOUS FREEDOM OF OUR FOUNDING FATHERS in lieu of this bastardized “religion” of Conquest over “infidels”.

    • http://conservativebootcamp.com Martin Hale

I'm sure it's been pointed out to you before, but no one is suggesting that the imam not be permitted to exercise his religion. No one has suggested that he not be able, under the very protections you cite, to open up an Islamic Centre with a prayer room. No one. If that's what you're hearing, then you're hearing wrong. It's not an issue of 'don't build it' – it's an issue of 'don't build it there.' I hope you can see the difference. If the imam was being denied all opportunity to exercise his religion, you might have a point. But since he's free to build in any number of other locations, it's really hard to build the case that he's being denied the right to exercise his chosen religion.

What people have been saying all along is that out of respect for the events which transpired nearby, an Islamic Centre at that location is in poor taste and offends the sensibilities of many Americans. Given that there are literally thousands of other potential sites around New York City for the Centre, I don't think a reasonable person would find that it's an undue restraint on the freedom of the imam and his backers to practice their religion to simply ask that they find another location. The governor of New York has gone so far as to offer other locations for the Islamic Centre, and the backers have said, “no thanks” to the offer. Which certainly supports the perception that there's a reason they want to place their Centre where it's planned.

Especially after the piece by moderate Muslims Raza and Fatah published this week which speaks to the intentional symbolism of dominance and conquest which is inherent in building the Centre where it's currently planned.

    • Mr. EMT

Yup, liberals love to use the constitution only when they can use it to undermine this Nation.
Such as: Putting up a monument for enemy terror, and calling it a “religious freedom”

      I am not impressed.
This is not a debate over religious freedom.
This is not a topic I will ever try to reason or rationalize with anyone about.
The only people celebrating this mosque and “islamic religious freedom” are doing so while dancing on the graves of three thousand people.

    • RBC47

      Well done,Joehark

      • Rose

Yeah, well-done Treason to a faretheewell.

Treason being so virtuous(sic) under the Joseph Stalin Agenda/now Platform of Dim Party Marxists.

    • Rose

We do not have “Freedom to Assault America unopposed while superficially disguised (sic) as a Religion”.

We also don't have “Freedom to aid and abet enemies of America while thinly disguised FALSELY as “fighting for Freedom of Religion” while they build a stronghold of ATTACK against America and call it falsely a “church” of their FAKE RELIGION/Dictatorship”.

We do have the RIGHT of SELF DEFENSE!

  • northerncanuck

That wasn't so bad. He made a good point about Muslims killing Muslims and it's true that principles shouldn't change for the sake of this place. But a public and vocal recognition for what it really stands for will overcome in the long run.

    • Rose

Patrick Henry: Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect every one who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined…. O sir, we should have fine times, indeed, if to punish tyrants, it were only sufficient to assemble the people!

Samuel Adams: If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Samuel Adams: The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men.

Samuel Adams: How strangely will the Tools of a Tyrant pervert the plain Meaning of Words!

Samuel Adams: If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.

So Obama essentially told the Boy Scouts of America… as iconic a representative of Americana as Cowboys, John Wayne, and a Superman committed to the American Way… to go to hell because he was too busy for a photo-op to bother with their 100th Jamboree…

But has time for “Iftar” or whatever the hell its called.

Shame, shame on this common political street thug. But its all for the good… get set for the bloodbath come November, Dhimicrats…

  • Rose

    I got this in the e-mail a few hours ago. This is a VIRAL Patriotic Message to Obama;
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVAhr4hZDJE

Obama knows he is wrong. The Cordoba House has nothing to do with Religious “Freedom”.

Obama is the Dumb Lady in “The Snake Song” by Al Wilson, available at you tube. The imam, Feisal Rauf is The Snake.

Hey Rose hope your having a good evening and I hope all is well with you and yours.

My husband is finally feeling better with his diabetes, especially after I told his meddling sister off, I basically told her to mind her own business. She's nothing but a typical leftist, she wants to tell the rest of us what to do an how to do it without taking any responsibility.

      • Rose

I LOVE IT!!! Great for you!!!
I'm glad your husband is doing better, too.

One thing helping mine is Chromium Picolate supplements – Dr. Cherry from Houston writes lots of books, and used to have a health show on TBN Christian TV, said once that Diabetics needed 4 times more than normal people – and none is in the natural diet anymore.

Since it is essential for metabolism of Sugar, and my family is sugar-holics, I added that when the doctor first told me, and said he'd give me time to control it without meds, for a while.
2 yrs ago, still no meds… Thank God.

But I feel it if I'm without the Chromium picolate a few days…

I've had a good day – didn't go out doors – we are hitting 100-ish these days… LOL!

Oh for a few weeks of a nice drizzly rain!!! hehehehe

Hope you have a great weekend. Watch that video I posted a link to! You will LOVE IT!

Anyone else surprised that Obamao does more to support and aid the enemy and improve the moral of osama bin laden's followers than he does our own troops?

  • Toastrider

Awful nice mosque you got there… be a shame if something happened to it…

(What? It's the Chicago way, after all)

    • Tom_pinko_Delay

Islamofascists threaten violence and destruction to get their way. Now you are doing it, too? Weak, and disturbing.

      • gfchicago

Gee TPD, I see you don't understand sarcasm.

        • Tom_pinko_Delay

An emoticon would have helped. Sarcasm is not always obvious in a written forum.

          • gfchicago

Fair enough TPD. Emotion cons I believe would be fun on this site. I just don't know how John and the rest of the bloggers would feel about it though.

            But your Treason is.

Entered, January 10, 1963, into the Congressional Record

Joseph Stalin: America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within.
        CURRENT COMMUNIST GOALS

        1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.

        2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.

there are thre issues in this mess: 1) Where the Islamic people want to build their center and why; 2) the total insensitivity to the feelings of Americans about the 9/11 site and its surrounds; and, 3) Islam itself and why it is more than merely a religion. the first two issues have been discussed more or less well. What hasn't been discussed, and perhaps the key to the general displeasure of this mess, is the fact that Islam contains a body of work that promotes dominance of the world for Islam, and promotes a set of laws, Sharia, to govern its subjects. Infidels do not want to be governed by Sharia, that is for certain! Thus, Islam has two components, its religious base and Sharia.

There is little argument that the religious base of Islam is more or less accepted, and building mosques and other establishments is just fine for that religious purpose. But when Sharia comes into play as well, where it is applied to everyone, that is an abomination and a sacrilige, and must not be allowed. If it is possible to separate the two parts, and allow the religious part the full freedom we accord all religions, but deny the second part, Sharia, from ever being practiced in the US, all would be well. Then only the placement issue has teeth, illuminating the insensitivity of the Muslims.

    • Rose

You forgot to also address mosques being built for the sole purpose of being used for JIHADIST TERRORISTS – as when the imam tells the WORLD in foreign languages that the Cordoba House will be the TRIUMPHANT GAZA AT GROUND ZERO TO AMERICA.

Rest of your post was great.

  • RBC47

Pres. Obama may not be right about much, but you know he's right about something when the invariably vicious partisan Mr Huston opposes it and the bigots come out in full-throated support of him. I'm feeling thankful we have politicians like Bloomberg and Obama who will on occasion take a risk to support an important American principle.

Rose, your ability to get it wrong is amazing. This IS about freedom of religion, precisely because the opponents of the mosque have made that the issue. The mosque is not at Ground Zero, the Moslems who want to build it are not the same as the terrorists ( very different, in fact), and the idea that it is some kind of “war memorial” to terrorists is so bizarre that only someone utterly disconnected from reality could even think it.

    • Rose

No! His Malaysian publication BRAGS about this Cordoba House at Ground Zero being the GAZA OF AMERICA.

Since he is the imam of the “FREE GAZA FLOTILLA” where he worked with Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, and is working with Raqshid Khalidi of the “Audacity of Hope Flotilla” of the same purpose, you are without credibility.

Bill Ayers links Odrama Queen and the imam.

The State Dept tour of middle east links Odrama Queen and the imam.

“Free Gaza” links the imam of the Cordoba House with his own Malaysian Book TITLE that CORDOBA HOUSE is the GAZA OF AMERICA.

      You have no credibility.

Hudna is not a successful debate tactic for you.
