It was disrespectful of those boys to wear their American flag attire, both towards their flag and towards their fellow students. Gilroy has a large Hispanic population because it's a farming community, so those boys are probably in the minority and want to assert their patriotism, but to do so on cinco de mayo is like wearing a devil costume to Xmas mass.

The very first thing that came to mind when there was this ya ya over wearing USA or Mexico shirts was the gross incompetence of the local Board and the admins. Many hundreds of school districts have long had a policy of SCHOOL UNIFORMS.

Saint Patrick's day is a religous holiday that morphed into a cultural festival. Cynco de mayo is a Mexican poltical holiday. It would be like Americans living in Mexico noisily celebrating Independence Day and encounraging all the natives to recognize it as well.
