Eric Massa: How Wide Is His Stance?
Written By : John Hawkins

So, how much chatter are you hearing about Eric Massa today? Maybe so little that you’re asking, “Who the heck’s Eric Massa?” He’s a netroots endorsed congressman from New York and he has apparently gotten caught up in a little Mark Foley/Larry Craig action:

First-term Rep. Eric Massa announced Wednesday that he will not seek reelection, saying his doctors have told him that he can’t continue to “run at 100 miles an hour.”

But several House aides told POLITICO that the House ethics committee has been informed of allegations that the New York Democrat, who is married with two children, made unwanted advances toward a junior male staffer.

A more senior staffer — Ronald Hikel, Massa’s former deputy chief of staff and legislative director — took the complaints to the ethics committee and was interviewed about them twice.

Hikel declined to comment about the situation, but House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) confirmed that the Democratic leadership had been informed of the allegations before the news broke.

“I’ve heard of that allegation before,” he said. “I had some indication, yes, but I don’t want to go beyond that. And my presumption [is] it’s being pursued in the course of business.”

…Hoyer said news of the sexual harassment allegation — coming on the same day Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) gave up his gavel on the Ways and Means Committee — shouldn’t give Republicans a leg up in November.

“I don’t think it helps anybody in the institution, any one of us on either side of the aisle. It certainly didn’t help Mr. Foley,” Hoyer said, referring to former Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.), who resigned from Congress in 2006 amid allegations that he sent sexually explicit instant messages to an underage male page.

“When there were allegations about Mr. Foley or others, I think the institution suffers,” Hoyer continued. “And that’s why it’s so important that each of us conducts ourselves in a way that won’t bring discredit on the institution.”

Of course Steny Hoyer wouldn’t think that Charles Rangel FINALLY getting pushed out of Ways and Means and Eric Massa getting caught up in a Mark Foley style sex scandal wouldn’t “give Republicans a leg up in November.”

But, it seems to me that Democrats promised to come in and clean up Congress, didn’t they? Yet, here’s Steny Hoyer with his own Mark Foley on his hands, playing the same role that Dennis Hastert did back in 2006. Democrats called for Hastert to resign back then and if they believed their own bs, they’d be demanding that Hoyer resign because he knew about Massa’s behavior. Now, me? I believe my own bs; so since I didn’t say Hastert should resign, I won’t call for Hoyer to step down either.

What I will say, however, is that Republicans should trumpet Massa’s name from the hilltops this year, just like the Dems did with Foley in 2006. Let them get a taste of their own medicine!

Nixon wont hold his breath til the liberals condemn this behavior. Hell, most of them support it or indulge in it.

Is it possible for Congress to be more discredited than it already is?

  • canddmf

Not that the Repub’s are clean here, but they have to trumpet the folley until they run out of breath, just like the Dem’s did. It is now the only way that voters have a chance of finding out about the perv’s they’ve elected.

“Democrats called for Hastert to resign back then and if they believed their own bs, they’d be demanding that Hoyer resign because he knew about Massa’s behavior.”

Forgive the haphazard stream of consciousness. As you watch the response to Republican scandals (Mark Foley, Mark Sanford, Larry Craig, Rush Limbaugh…) coming from the left – and from the MSM specifically, you wonder since they do not lay claim to traditional family values, a war on drugs, belief in capitalism, what scandal could possibly be as embarrassing and trumpeted?

I guess liberals caught flying in private planes (Nancy Pelosi, many UN Copenhagen summit attendees), driving gas guzzlers (politicians driven in Suburbans or Escalades, check out the Oscars this weekend), living in extravagant houses (Thomas Friedman, John Edwards). Possibly a liberal wearing fur. A liberal carrying a hand gun or their detail security carrying concealed weapons (Madonna) would be an egregious infraction.
Not paying your taxes (Geitner, Daschle, Charles Rangel …). Lefties abusing women (Roman Polanski).

When we protest (Tea Partiers, khaki clad Florida recount protesters), it’s horrendous. When the left protests (Immigration marches, Anti-war protests, California school protests), it’s patriotic.

The Dixie Chicks say something that doesn’t sit well with their audience and the audience responds (destroy Dixie Chicks music, stop listening), the Dixie Chicks end up crying on the Barbara Walters show. When Rush wants to buy a small stake of a football team – the media responds. Did he get to cry to Barbara Walters? No. The media felt triumphant in Rush’s defeat. It was justified. How come they didn’t understand that the rejection of the Dixie Chicks was justified?

But even if there were to be a lefty news-worthy scandal, the lefty gets a reprieve because, let’s face it, in the eyes of the MSM, the leftist has SO many other redeeming qualities. Why throw out the baby with the bath water? Why cause any consternation amongst thieves? This couldn’t be more evident in the John Edwards cover-up. By the way, did Rielle Hunter ever consider an abortion?

Again, if it has legs, run with it, but by all means compare apples to apples(pedophile to pedophile not pedophile to perv).

Are you intentionally overlooking the years we spent bashing Clinton’s affairs?

I have seen and heard enough about John and Elizabeth Edwards for a lifetime.

As far as an answer for Rush’s situation, the media has quit talking about his Oxy addiction, three trips to rehab, and I haven’t heard anything about his possesion of prescription drugs(Viva Viagra), prescribed to someone else but found by airport security, in a good year and a half. When did ESPN start leaning to one political perspective? and he didn’t have to whine to Barbara, I listened to three hours of it everyday for two weeks on his radio show.

Rielle Hunter? You will have to ask that of her, she has her child, be happy for her that she didn’t choose the alternative.

“nut” you picked a good adjective.

I’m very happy Rielle Hunter chose life.
