Filling The Swamp: Ethics Subcommittee Recommends Reprimand For Rangel
Written By : William Teach

Let’s see if one is credibly charged with

…improper corporate-financed travel to the Caribbean; failing to report a half-million dollars in assets on a financial disclosure form; failing to pay taxes on income of $75,000 from a villa in the Dominican Republic; using his congressional letterhead to solicit donations for a school named for him; accepting four rent-subsidized apartments in New York from a Realtor, and using one of them as an office..

And one is a long serving Democrat, one gets

The ethics panel investigating Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) is recommending that he be reprimanded for the conduct that resulted in 13 charges against the veteran lawmaker.

There was no recommendation for punishment listed in the lengthy report issued by Green’s panel on Thursday.

So much for holding elected officials, also (supposed to be) known as public servants, to higher standards. Usually, as a partisan political person, I would write “imagine had Rangel been a Republican.” Instead, imagine he had not been a longer term member of Congress (with elections coming up), but, you or I: we would have been looking at a long trial with the good possibility of huge fines and a jail sentence.

Must be nice to be part of the ruling class.

Give it up to TPM commenters for decrying Rangel simply getting a reprimand.

Can somebody please tell me what the difference was between what Rangel was doing and what Duke Cunningham was doing? Besides the R by Duke's name, of course.

I guess that would answer my question. Never mind.

If Mohamed Atta had been a member of CONgress, the House Ethics Committee would have given him nothing more than a “reprimand” for the 911 attack. “mongrel” hussein would then have called him to apologize for that harsh chastisement.

  • Christopher_Taylor

And this surprises who, exactly? Black, high ranking Democrat = can get away with anything with only extremely minor results. We can only hope the people of his district can dredge together enough self respect and dignity to show him the door next election.

  • Christopher_Taylor

I know why you're using the word “mongrel” for President Obama – he called African Americans “mongrels” much like whites, but please, respect the office at least.

And Atta would only get that treatment if he were a Democrat.

  • Vegeta1

    you forgot skin color.

I agree. He is the elected President of the United States, and should be treated with respect, even in disagreement. The nation made a mistake in electing him, but he was elected nonetheless.

We should all be thankful that this country has the Right to make mistakes, and the Right to correct them come November.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

I do have a hard time really hating him for this reason. Yes he's an idiot, yes he has no experience, yes he has no place running a fast-food joint let alone the country.

However, we put him in charge. We bear that particular responsibility. Obama is like a kid that really wants to drive the family car but is clearly too young and incompetent, and the voters are like the parent that gave him the keys and told him to have fun. Who is to blame when he crashes it in to a light pole?

People in Michigan have a chance to send President Obama a message August 3rd! http://mittromneycentral.com/2010/07/30/we-need…

President Obama is trying to knock down Michigan’s best chance at finally having a conservative governor, but we can’t let Obama win! The stakes of this election are simply too high!

August 3rd is the most important day in Michigan politics in years! We need to do what we can to help make sure Michigan sends President Obama a message.

Bullshit. He is not eligable to be president and he obtained campaign contributions from illegal sources. He really did steal the election. he did this b/c he knew he could after 8 yrs of the media destroying Bush and the panty waste republicans letting them get away with it. I take no responsibilty for the obama and I hope he ends up in jail for the damage he is doing and his illegal manuvers to take office. Most every democrat in office deserves no better. Revolution around the corner IMO.

  • UFKA_Smithwick

In a democracy you get the government you deserve.

Apparently we f-ed up pretty bad.

I didn't vote for him, I specifically voted against him in fact. But the majority of American voters did, and I'm not going to give up my citizenship so . . . .

  • UFKA_Smithwick

Why won't the voters of New York get rid of this guy?

Way to waste your hard earned (by others) freedoms.

  • Mr. EMT

Oh, I don't mind taking the same position about the president that leftists have with our soldiers.
I'll respect the office, but I don't respect obamao.

  • gfchicago

Thank you, that's exactly how I feel. My husband keeps telling me that I have to show him respect, and I keep telling him like hell I do.

  • Karma Hoser

He's black, and he's Democrat, so any accusations againt him are raaayyyyciisst! Yes, a (D) next to a politician's name guarantees a pass in the snooze media!!!

  • http://conservativebootcamp.com Martin Hale

To his credit, Mr. Obama is calling for Mr. Rangel to “end his career with dignity”.

But even having Mr. Rangel resign doesn't undo the long-term damage damage done by a House ethics panel which apparently has no ethics itself. Their decision shows that they don't understand the growing distrust with which many Americans regard them. I'd warrant there's a direct connection between the thinking which allowed them to reach their recommendation on Mr. Rangel and the current unpopularity of Congress with the American people. We might as well change the appellation of Senators to 'Neros' and Representatives to “Ludwigs” for all the imperiousness with which they're discharging their duties.

  • Bill Fabrizio

Martin, as always a good post. But you may want to change your last sentence. Having already changed the appellation of President to “Baracks”, we might as well change Senators to “Mohammeds” and Representatives to “Kalids”! Sorry to be critical but political correctness demands this action!

  • Mediumheadboy

I'll show him exactly the same respect the left showed Bush and no more. “As ye sow, so shall ye reap.”

  • Mediumheadboy

Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't jinx it, but anybody notice a distinct lack of leftist trolls on this thread?

  • Christopher_Taylor

No, not the man Barack Obama, the office of President. Big difference.

  • http://conservativebootcamp.com Martin Hale

Let's hold off on using those monikers until there are a few more Muslims joining the cesspool down in DC. Our collective roots are still more in Europe than the traditional Islamic bastions in the Middle East.

I guess we could go with 'Franco's' for one or the other in recognition of our burgeoning Hispanic population, but in the end, Franco was just another European despot and not really reflective of the origin of most of our Hispanic populace. Maybe in recognition of the black population we could call one group 'Amin's'

OK, enough fun – back to that workbook which has had me stumped.

  • Bill Fabrizio

Ah yes, our collective roots are more in Europe. True! Unfortunately, more and more of Europe's collective roots are in the traditional Islamic bastions in the Middle East. And even worse, our enlightened elected officials in NYC are racing toward the construction of a mosque adjacent to hallowed WTC ground. And the fools don't even understand the message of conquest this sends to the Islamic world!

You might want to reconsider the monikers!

  • gfchicago

Sorry CT, it's very difficult to separate the man from the office. Unfortunately the man in this case is the office, and very obviously he doesn't respect the office of the Presidency, kinda like Bubba getting blow jobs in the oval office.

Going around calling U.S. citizens mongrels, going to kick ass, calling American citizens jackasses calling tea partiers teabaggers ect, ect… None of these were slips. They were done with the full court of the press in attendance. It's not as if he didn't realize that there was a live mic on somewhere in the vicinity. He's just like Bubba in certain respects with the coarsening the values that we hold dear in public discourse and setting horrible examples for today's youth.

So I have to respectively disagree with you on this issue.

  • Mr. EMT

I don't think anyone from the right has disrespected the office to near the degree obamao has.
Remember him letting his rapper buddies sit in the oval office chair for photo ops?
I'm surprised he hasn't pimped out the limo or airforce one yet complete with fuzzy dice and hydro shocks.

  • Mr. EMT

Oh, i find it pretty easy to separate him from his office.
I do not refer to him by any title he has.
I notice very few in the MSM do as well.
I have also not seen any global leader refer to him as anything other than Mr. Obama.

  • Mr. EMT

Now now, we cant be calling obamao a monkey… or can we?
Is it racist now to call the pres a monkey? Cuz it wasnt before was it?

  • UFKA_Smithwick

They were undoubtedly stunned in to silence by this egregious display of partisanship and injustice.

  • Christopher_Taylor

The story on this keeps changing, now it seems like he's going to be removed from his office. We'll see what happens in the end.
