News Media Blackout: White House Staffer Who Fired Gun at Boyfriend Resigns

My guess is that unless you are a fan of talk radio—or this page—you never heard of the story of the White House staffer that tried to shoot and kill her boyfriend near their Washington D.C. home.

In August White House staffer Barvetta Singletary got mad at her cop boyfriend in D.C. and grabbed his gun and began shooting at him. Well, now she has resigned from her position in Obama’s White House.

On Wednesday, according to a report by WJLA in Washington, “Barvetta Singletary, a White House staffer, resigned today following assault charges.” This dramatic news, however, received scant coverage in the major media. As of Thursday morning, only The Hill and Roll Call had covered the resignation. All three reports credit an unnamed White House spokesperson for confirming the news.

WJLA provides a short summary of the facts of the case:

Tuesday, prosecutors said a White House staffer had been indicted on assault and other charges following a dispute with a U.S. Capitol Police officer at her home.

Prince George’s County say 37-year-old Singletary got into an argument with a U.S. Capitol Police officer after an alleged sexual encounter. Singletary then grabbed the officer’s service weapon from a bag and fired once in his direction. No one was injured.

Now, here’s the thing: Unless you read our story from August 11 or you heard this story on a conservative talk radio show, I’ll bet you never knew that an aide to the president was caught up in a shooting scandal in Washington D.C.! Because the Old Media establishment has pretty much ignored this story.

Now, imagine if a Republican president had an aide who was running around D.C. shooting at her boyfriend! The media would have made that aide’s name national news in a flash.
