Not So Merry Christmas Coming in New York
Written By : Dave Blount

Big Government grows at a rate that exceeds even the rate it bleeds the life out of the economy — as evidenced by New York, which is scheduled to go bankrupt by Christmas despite the second-highest tax rate in the country. Accidental governor David Paterson is yelping in panic:

“We’re going to run out of cash in four and a half weeks. We are going to run out of money. Unless we do something about it, (it will) threaten generations,” Paterson said.

Paterson is so desperate that — having tried new taxes on everything he could think of — he now advocates finally reducing state spending. But of course, the entrenched bureaucracy will have none of it.

Senate Democrats, with their tenuous 32-30 hold on the upper house, are terrified to make school and hospital cuts because, they said, the cuts could mean increases in local property taxes.

And that could mean suburban Democrats on Long Island, in Westchester and other parts of the state could have trouble getting re-elected next year.

Remember, high property taxes led to the ouster of many suburban Democrats last week, including Westchester County Executive Andy Spano. Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi could also lose once absentee ballots are counted.

New York property taxes are already so astronomical, they were a major factor in driving Yours Truly out of the state. But the money has to come from somewhere — unless of course bureaucrats reduce the size of government. But that would defeat the very purpose of government, which is to grow like wildfire at the expense of our wealth and freedom.

Here are a couple of tips, Patty.

Stop spending on lunatic left-wing programs only you Democrats want.

Stop raising taxes and pushing the people who actually work out of the state.

    Moron.

This is typical Liberal mentality. When money gets tight and you can’t raise taxes, where do the frist cuts go? Schools, Fire, Police, and any basic service that will punish the people that live there!

What about non-essential over-paid government bureaucrats? What about expense accounts for state-employees? What about the obvious waste in the system?

I refuse to feel sorry for the Liberal politicians that created this mess, or for the idiots that keep putting them into office!

To add to your list, Baud, Paterson is also going after Medicaid cuts to hospitals and other health care delivery organisations. Of course this will mean layoffs and closures of hospitals and other health care organisations, most of which provide health care services to the Medicaid eligible population (I almost wrote “the poor” in place of “the Medicaid eligible population” but realised that many on Medicaid are not poor, so I changed it). The hospitals operated by the health system for which I work are going to see cuts averaging about $14MM each in Medicaid funding if this all happens according to plan. And that lower level of funding kicks in 1 December, 2009. I don’t think we’ll have to do more than lay off some staff, and shuffle other staff around. The merit programme for most staff may take a year’s hiatus and so might the contribution to the 403(b). But there are other hospitals for whom cuts like that are showstoppers which will serve to close the doors of that hospital. Not just closed to Medicaid patients, but closed to everybody in that community.

Paterson is working hard to make these cuts as painful as is possible for the people of New York. Hopefully he’ll be amply rewarded during the next selection/election cycle.

“Unless we do something about it, (it will) threaten generations”

Cut entitlements? Require people work? Close wasteful and redundant government agencies?

Nope. They’ll just keep raising taxes and slashing local police, fire, and school spending.

Now is the time that the liberal bastions are learning they are not indispensible, and New York can not treat its citizens as a bottomless bucket of money just because it’s New York. nobody *has* to live or work there, as the government is rapidly finding out.
