Ohio Dems Seek Gun Records To Harass Gun Owners
Written By : Warner Todd Huston

In the wake of the new Supreme Court decision on the 2nd Amendment, we have this illuminating story from Ohio and if this isn’t the perfect example of why American gun owners fear detailed firearm owners registration records in the hands of government officials there isn’t one to be had. Ohio’s State Democrat Party recently sent a letter to every county sheriff’s office demanding that sheriffs send them the names and addresses of all concealed carry permit holders in their county.

There is, of course, only one possible reason that these Democrats wanted this information. Democrats wanted to harass these legal concealed permit holders. They wanted to target Ohioans that were exercising their Constitutional right and to set them up for political attacks, they wanted to somehow use the personal information of law abiding citizens as a weapon against them.

Fortunately, it is illegal in Ohio for such records to be made available to the public and that includes political parties, advocacy organizations, or journalists. The county sheriffs all refused to acquiesce to the Democrat’s demands and the state party quickly issued a second letter withdrawing their request.

It isn’t too hard to imagine, though, a situation where some partisan sheriff just might agree that Ohio’s Democrats should be allowed to use these registries of law abiding citizens as a weapon to attack them in their homes, their places of business, and in their persons.

This is the flip side to the sort of “transparency” that crosses the line between harmless public records and dangerous abuse of law abiding citizen’s private information. Look what happened in California’s Prop 8 fight. Donors lists for the pro-traditional marriage cause ended up in the hands of militant gay activists who took that information and spread it all over the Internet in an effort to open those pro-marriage donors to personal attack.

In the case of Prop 8, people made a lawful and conscientious decision to support traditional marriage and radical gay activists used that information as a weapon against them. The same could easily have happened to Ohio lawful Ohio gun owners — or any other state that keeps such information on hand.

None of us want to live in a world where we are targeted for harassment by radicals because we are exercising our Constitutional rights. But that is precisely what Ohio Democrats wanted to do in the Buckeye State and it is precisely what militant gay advocates did to those that donated money to the pro-Prop 8 cause in California.

Americans need to find that sensible position between transparency and harassment, certainly, but we also need not have to be personally identified and open for personal attack for exercising our rights as Americas like these left-wing activists want to do. No gun registry should exist in a free America.

Sweet, now we can hear nothing about comparisons between Ohio and Nazi germany for the next few months! Ver are your paperz citizen!?!?!

    Oh right. Nevermind.

  • coolczech

What if we split the difference with Democrats: let's document illegal aliens, and leave legal gun owners alone?

    • UFKA_Smithwick

      Funny thing about that.

According to leftists it is impossible to remove 10-20 million people here illegally. Human beings over 100 lbs (mostly) who have to work, rent houses, go to the store, show their ID for certain things, etc. It is absolutely not possible to find them. Nor is it desirable, despite the fact that they are breaking the law and have no right to be here.

Guns however, of which there are several hundred million in this country, weigh very little, are inert and can be stored in an attic or buried or otherwise hidden very easily, can and should all be confiscated. Far from being impossible that is apparently both easy and desirable. Despite being a legal right that is mostly beneficial.

      Interesting logic on their part.

Further illustration of how wrong Liberals are about guns.

“Gun control does not mean we want to ban guns”… and then some guns are banned.
“Gun control does not mean we want to confiscate guns”… until stories like this show up.

Liberals, you have no credibility on this issue!

  • TheDickNixon

Nixon has no problem with releasing the name of gun owners, as long as the name addresses of every woman who has had a abortion is released as well in Ohio.

Both groups are entitled to the same level of protection of privacy.

Well, who is actually surprised by this? That's what gun registration is FOR — creating lists of armed citizens so they can be harassed and disarmed at will. Criminals do not register their guns.

    • StanW

Hey, I've got an idea. Why don't we publish a list of everyone in the country that DOESN'T have a weapon and a permit to use it.

What say you, Liberals. Would you like THAT!

      • UFKA_Smithwick

I think anti-gunners should have to identify themselves when they move in to a new community so that all of their neighbors know not to ever use a gun to protect those people should the need arise (as per their beliefs).

Ohio's gun laws are quite satisfactory, IMO. There is no registration required simply to own a gun, CCW is legal after a reasonable training course, and CCW lists are kept sealed. Not surprisingly, crime (especially violent crime) has leveled off or dropped since CCW passed despite Ohio's high unemployment rate and unfortunate status as a drug trafficking hub because of it's numerous interstate highway intersections.

The dynamics of the request are interesting. The Dems could indeed be trying to target CCW holders because the otherwise disastrous Gov. Strickland was endorsed by the NRA…which is about all he has going for him.

Of course, the Party denies the request had anything to do with the endorsement, so by their own admission it looks like they were planning on using the information for abusive purposes.

Can't wait for the liberal 'pushback' spinning which is inevitable. Here are my top three:

    1. You don't know what the purpose of their request for those names was. Maybe they were going send them a letter of thanks for being strong defence-minded pillars of their communities. You just don't know!

    2. If these allegedly peaceful gun-toters haven't done anything wrong, then what's the harm in their names being released?

    3. Other State agencies routinely sell mailing lists to other organisations, why should lists of gun owners be any different?

Now, I think I'll go take a nice hot shower, 'cause coming up with those spins made me feel horrible and unclean.

    • StanW

But Martin, what will the GFW Liberals whine about NOW??????

Thanks for taking one for the team!

      • http://conservativebootcamp.com Martin Hale

It's the least I can do Stan.

  • Mr. EMT

And they wonder why conservatives oppose things like Hitler's gun registration policy being pushed on Americans.

    • Trench_Raider

      Too late! 8-p
The Gun Control Act of 1968 was modeled in part on a law that passed in Germany in the 1930s. So passing laws enspired by Nazi era german legislation is nothing new at all.

      • Mr. EMT

Oh, I know it's too late.
But not many supports of registration know they are followers of Hitler, and how easy that system can be turned on the people.
Hitler demonstrated the only purpose of gun registration.

  • Christopher_Taylor

Looks like the system worked. People had to register guns the same way they do cars, homes, taxes, etc. The system kept people from using that information for political gain.

    • StanW

Yes, the system worked… THIS TIME. Next time, we may not be so lucky.

      • Christopher_Taylor

Sure, but is that a flaw with the system or the corrupt people trying to game it?

        • StanW

The names of gun owners is not protected like medical records and other personal information. This time it was the sherrifs that were asked. Next time it may be a county clerk with an axe to grind.

The point is, The Democrats have no business having these records. Not to mention how disgusting it is to have to register with the government to excercise a Constitutional right!

          • Christopher_Taylor

I can only only imagine the horror you must feel at registering to vote.

          • StanW

Not the same thing, CT. Not even close!

          • StanW

Not the same thing, CT. Not even close!

        • mightysamurai

Considering this “system” was made specifically so Democrats could corrupt it in the first place, I'd say the system is at fault.

          • Mr. EMT

Before I left virginia, and after the VT shooting, one of the local newspapers, Roanoke times, did this little stunt:

Virginia newspaper equates gun owners with child molesters and publishes the names and addresses of all permit holders

        • UFKA_Smithwick

I think any system that makes it easy for people to game it for personal game can be fairly described as a flawed system.

  • Xadenblade

More proof that Gun Control laws were never meant to control Crime.

To a government (any government ) criminals with guns is a minor inconvenience compared to an armed populace ready to defend it’s self.

  • cylar

What, no arrogant commentary from any of our resident leftists, defending this nonsense?

    I'm disappointed.

  • Kyoung

Also remember, the NRA is backing Strickland in the election. With Kasich having such a terrible second amendment background, why not just not recommend anyone?

    Strickland is the worst.
