That Stimulating Stimulus Paid for Homemade Porno?
Written By : Warner Todd Huston

Well if this isn’t a fitting addition to the story of the stimulus what is? The University of Notre Dame in Indiana recently fired an electrical engineering professor over allegations that the prof used $190,000 in federal grant money and matching university funds to buy cameras and other equipment to make homemade porno.

Like a true hair-splitting academic, professor Oliver M. Collins is fighting his firing claiming that the university has no proof that he was the one that made the pornographic images that the university found stored on his university-owned computer. That’s right, he is clueless on how all those porn images got on his computer. Just clueless! And all those cameras he bought with the school’s money? Um… well… he’s going to take up bird watching… maybe?

Collins has filed a lawsuit claiming that the university owes him more than $75,000 in damages. But Collins was later heard telling university officials, “Hey, nice economic package you have there.” But I jest.

It appears that there’s been a lot of screwing around with our federal tax dollars these days, folks. Perhaps prof Collins just took it one step farther along… allegedly.

I'm willing to bet a bottle of good Bourbon that Professor Porno's next argument will be that it's art, and protected by the First Amendment!!
Hey, just look at the windows of College Peofessors' offices during an election year, and plenty of them will be sporting Democrat campaign posters in violation of many a schools' policy!!

The stimulus actually stimulated something after all, even if it was only in this professor's shorts.

The really sad part is that he might have gotten away with it had he sprung for a $100 external hard drive.

Probably one of the few things the stimulus actually helped produce.

It's my understanding that each CCD (charge coupled device) emerges from the manufacturing process with a few dead pixels. I've been told that the pattern of dead pixels is: a)unique to just one CCD, and b)leaves an indelible mark on every image captured by that CCD. If all of that is true, then couldn't the university determine if the images on the computer were captured using the CCD installed in the camera he purchased by performing such a comparison?

It seems to me that researching the physical evidence is what's called for here, not engaging in verbal sparring. Let Herr Professor say what he wishes. Physical evidence will exonerate or indict him.

As much as I hate to say it, the presence of the material on his computer does not PROVE he put it there. Access logs would show date/time of access, but logs can be altered. A forensic analysis of the drive may be able to determine if files were altered. Bottom line is needing to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, and knowing how easy it is (especially in universities whose security is almost non-existant) for unauthorized users to gain access, the only way to PROVE he did it is to catch him in the act.

While I think there probably is an excellent chance he did do it, you'd have a tough time convincing someone who understands technology that he's guilty beyond a reasonable doubt if you don't have eyewitness accounts of surveilliance tapes. His attorney will make this claim and demand the university submit viable proof or reinstate his client. Sadly, it's likely another dirtbag will get off the hook. But the alternative makes it far to easy for someone to be framed.
