The New Ill. Dem. Lt. Gov. Candidate’s Anti-Catholic Song

For those of you still wondering what sort of tangled mess that is Obama’s Illinois… On March 27, Jeff Finley of the Pioneer Press made an interesting discovery when looking up info on the Democrat’s new pick for Lt. Governor, Sheila Simon. Apparently Sheila’s 5-piece, all-girl band named the Loose Gravel Girls has an anti-Catholic, Pope bashing song in its play list.

The song titled “Pope Knop” (that’s pronounced Kuh-Nope) seems to be about a four-year-old girl that has somehow become a Pope that is “drawing with markers on the Vatican floor” so that “going to church will never be a bore.”

The song starts out with some pseudo Catholic liturgy type music and then segues into a piano driven, banjo plucking little tune that features a bouncy beat and a slide whistle apparently to denote that it is supposed to be “funny,” I guess.

Also featured in the lyrics the girls say that they can see right through the Church: “Hey old Church we can see right through ya. We can see a new… hallelujah” Not sure how to take that line, either. What are the Loose Gravel Girls saying they can see through, anyway?

The song can be heard on the Loose Gravel Girl’s MySpace page. Sheila Simon sings and plays banjo and bassoon.

As I said, I am not sure what to think about this little tune. It is awfully irreverent of the Pope and the Church, in any case. I have to say, though, that its hard not to see this as a slap at the Church despite its jaunty tune and silly slide whistle.

Lyrics:

Sometimes the news can slow your speed, too many stories you don’t want to read, almost makes you want to give up hope until you meet the brand-new pope, Pope Knop.

Pope Knop.

Pope Knop, with short blond hair, Pope Knop, wears Barbie underwear. Loves to dance around when she’s half bare, so join me now and say a prayer for Pope Knop.

Pope Knop.

Workin’ with grownups everyday leaves not much time for playground play. Just when you think that you can’t cope, here comes the call from the micro-Pope, Pope Knop.

Pope Knop.

Pope Knop, she’s only 4, but what she’s got in store. She’s drawing with markers on the Vatican floor. Going to church will never be a bore with Pope Knop.

Pope Knop.

Hey old Church we can see right through ya. We can see a new… hallelujah. Get off the kneeler and don’t you mope, jump and shout with the first girl Pope, Pope Knop.

Pope Knop.

Pope Knop, her eyes are blue, Pope Knop, she sees the heaven in you. She can’t read much, that is true but she knows her holy water from her Mountain Dew. Pope Knop.

Pope Knop.

Pope Knop, with short blond hair, Pope Knop, wears Barbie underwear. Loves to dance around when she’s half bare, so join me now and say a prayer for Pope Knop.

Pope Knop.

Pope Knop.

Say Amen, for Pope Knop.

Well, interesting. See, I was under the impression that for Catholics the Pope was a revered figure, not one open to ridicule and satire.

Well, interesting. See, I was under the impression that for Catholics the Pope was a revered figure, not one open to ridicule and satire. But I guess it isn’t too surprising that a liberal Democrat belongs to a band that makes fun of the Catholic Church and ridicules and belittles the Pope, eh?

Well, whatever…
