Voting Rights Chief In Black Panthers Case Transferred Out Of D.C.
Written By : William Teach

I’m sure the transfer was just routine, and had nothing to do with the case, and this was not about retaliation, right? Right? RIGHT?

The veteran Justice Department voting rights section chief who recommended going forward on a civil complaint against members of the New Black Panther Party after they disrupted a Pennsylvania polling place in last year’s elections has been removed from his post and transferred to the U.S. attorney’s office in South Carolina.

Justice Department officials confirmed Monday that Christopher Coates, who signed off on the complaint’s filing in federal court in Philadelphia in January accusing the party and three of its members of civil rights violations, would begin his new assignment next month.

And what does Justice have to say?

Justice Department spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler on Monday said that as a general policy, the department does not comment on personnel matters, but she said she could confirm that Mr. Coates continues to be a Justice employee and will begin an 18-month detail with the U.S. attorney’s office in South Carolina, beginning in January.

Ms. Schmaler also said the decision to move Mr. Coates to a new position within the department had nothing to do with the New Black Panther Party case but was the result of conversations Mr. Coates initiated with officials within the Civil Rights Division earlier this year.

She did not elaborate.

It will be interesting to see if Mr. Coates decides that he has something to say, himself, if it sinks in that the DOJ is playing games, and potentially retaliating against him for his recommendation. Perhaps he was making a pest of himself with the DOJ regarding the dropping of the charges, since it seems, according to the story, that he was highly respected within the voting rights department.

(Civil Rights Commission) Commissioner Todd Gaziano, a former Justice Department lawyer who served in the Office of Legal Counsel during the Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Clinton administrations, said the dismissal had the potential to significantly change enforcement of the Voting Rights Act “for good or for bad.”

Good for Democrats, who love to cheat, bad for Republicans, who like to stop Democrat cheating.

Coates was one of the people involved in the Black Panthers case who was told by the DOJ to not cooperate with the CRC investigation.

Now the Church of Liberalism has taken up the Catholic practice of “reassigning” it’s people that have committed transgressions.

History has shown us that this has a nasty habit of resurfacing though…usually in a flurry of lawsuits and criminal prosecutions.

This crap is getting old. Somebody needs to monitor and delete these.

Working on it. They seem to be getting through the spam filters more and more. I walked like 10 of them yesterday. Might have to ask John to install Bad Behavior.

William, I use WordPress for my blog and unless I’m misremembering there’s an option in the administration, I think it’s under the Presentation menu and the Discussion menu nested under that, which with a simple tick of a box keeps pingbacks from showing in the article list.

  • William Teach

I’m not finding it in my admin for Pirate’s Cove (I only have so much access with RWN,) but, I use a special comments script on my site to separate TBs/PBs within the comments form and they do not show in the comment pop up box. That said, I use Akismet and Bad Behavior, which stops most of that same stuff. I get about 15-20 crap links per day, at least.

They seem to be hitting RWM a lot more, lately. I wacked a bunch for not only this post, but some of the others. And most of them are spam links.

OK, I’ll admit that I’m running an ‘older’ version of WP – 2.3.3 – but that seems like such a useful feature, it boggles the mind that they would excise it in a version upgrade. I just checked on it my blog and the tick box I was thinking of is under the Options menu and then in the Discussion menu under that. It’s one of three tick boxes in a section that’s headed with “Usual settings for an article: (These settings may be overridden for individual articles.)”. It has the following caption next to it: “Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)” Uncheck that tick box and bye-bye pb’s.

Oh, that box. I was thinking about a way to separate the links from the comments. I think it is good to allow them, when possible. It makes it more likely people will link the site, though, using scripts to separate them from comments is best.

Well there you go trying to do things in a seamless and sophisticated way. I just used brute force to shut the suckers off altogether since they annoyed the heck out of me. Of course, my blog (which has lain fallow for the past six months as I’ve moved cross-country and settled into a demanding job) is the internet equivalent of a sleepy rural hamlet and most other people’s blog objective is to become the internet equivalent of a mid-sized, or larger, bustling city. As the old saying goes, YMMV.

The only scripting I’ve engaged in is trying to re-work a Greasemonkey script I found into something that serves the function of a good old-fashioned killfile for online forums. But I’m stuck on how to make it work with all the sites I visit, not just one. It’s dealing with the vagaries of HTML and style sheets from different sites that has me stymied. I have suspected for some time that I’ll have to write it as a modular script with individual modules for each site which are called based on the namespace of the site I’m visiting. And that sounds too much like actual hard work programming to me.

I’ll readily admit that as a veteran of Usenet I miss my killfile. I migrated to Usenet from the BBSs which I’d been posting to starting in 1978 or 1979. (Have you ever tried to work with a 110 baud modem?) I started with Usenet in 1983 back when it was all UUCP, and I bounced around there up until 2003/4. And yes, I’m a veteran of the NNTP switch, the Great Renaming and hundreds of group invasions and flame wars. I miss the halcyon days of Usenet/newsgroups. There was something so satisfying about plonking some ignorant b*st*rd into the bozo bin which I’m afraid will never be duplicated in the HTML world of the WWW.

But a fella can dream, can’t he?

    True, true.

Me, I got pretty obsessed with scripts when I switched from Typepad to WordPress. Same with themes. Used to love changing them up and use the Theme changer scripts. Kinda settled on my current one, haven’t changed in awhile. Probably have about 15-20 themes that I have used, though, some I had to ditch because incompatibility with higher WP versions. Sigh. One of my fav’s is still the old Yaaaaar, tis me blog theme. Not widget ready, though, and the sidebars load before the main column. Fluid width, though!(http://www.ncdevil.com/pc/)

If you ever want that script for separating TBs/PBs from comments, let me know, Martin. It is relatively easy, you are replacing a big chunk of the Comments file, and adding a little bit in the Pop Up Comments file.
