The Democrats’ Sequester Narrative: Setting the GOP Up as the Scapegoat
The sequester cuts are scheduled to occur today. Do you have your fallout shelter prepared for the “disastrous” economic collapse that is about to befall America? Have you stockpiled your medical supplies, knowing that fire departments and emergency responders will be all-but eliminated? If you believe even a quarter of what the hysterical left has to say about the sequester, you might sell all of your worldy possessions in anticipation of the dark times ahead of for America amidst the ghastly 2.4% cut in the budget we are about to see!
Alright, I’m done with the sarcasm… for now.
That’s what the left is screaming about. As President Obama surrounds himself with first responders to utilize his perfected tactic of using human props to demonstrate why his agenda is the only “caring” agenda, he has done little to actually discuss where the cuts could occur. Republicans have made themselves open to discussing where to allocate the cuts, but to tax-and-spend liberals, every cent in the federal budget is sacred and worthy of protection because that is one more cent that can be used to buy influence with the 47% who don’t pay taxes but still enjoy receiving the benefits of big government.
The cuts are $85 billion. That is roughly 2.4% of the projected government spending of $3.6 trillion. I say “projected” because the Senate has refused to pass a budget since 2009.
Let’s put that into real dollars. If your family operates on $3,000 per month and you had to make a 2.4% cut in your budget, you would need to cut out $72 of expenses. So, for those of us who understand what working on a budget means, if you had to cut $72 from your household budget would you tell your neighbors that you’re going to have to sell your home and live in a cardboard box? Or would you perhaps switch to a less-expensive cable company and eat out once less per month?
The answer really is that simple. We spend over $1 trillion more than we take in each year, every year since Obama came to Pennsylvania Avenue. And instead of getting remotely serious about cutting the wasteful spending, all we’ve heard from our president and his Party is that A) the cuts are not his idea (which they were) and B) that the cuts will cause untold damage to our way of life.
How bad has the hysteria gotten? Democratic Representative Maxine Waters, the liberal Chicken-Little, railed against the sequester cuts on Thursday and claimed,
“We don’t need to be having something like sequestration that’s going to cause these job losses – over 170 million jobs that could be lost – and so [Bernanke] made it very clear he’s not opposed to cuts but cuts must be done over a long period of time and in a very planned way rather than this blunt cutting that will be done by sequestration.”
Waters went on to give a list of social programs that would be taking a hit, with an emphasis on ones that would affect women and children.
“As you know in this committee, we have all of HUD [Housing and Urban Development] and HUD is responsible for so many programs that determine the quality of life for women and families,” she continued. “CDBG [Community Development and Block Grant Program], a form of grant programs will be cut by $153 million dollars. These are grants to cities that help with women and children and low-income programs. We also will cut the Home Program by $52 million if sequestration takes place. Native American housing grants by $34 million, house and choice grants $113 million, public housing – mostly single women in public housing – another $304 million. And homelessness, everybody claims to be concerned about homelessness and the growing number of women and children who are out their homeless but look they will take a $99 million hit and on and on and on. And so we are here today, one more time, talking about women and children and families and how we can protect our women, children, and families and have a decent quality of life – sequestration will set us back. All of the gains that we have made will be lost with sequestration.”
Hear that? 170 million jobs- gone because greedy Republicans hate children, the poor and women and want to honor the pitiful agreement made two years ago that trims a measly 2.4% off government spending.
Of course, it should be noted that it’s estimated that there are only between 135 and 143 million jobs in the U.S.
The economy is getting worse and unemployment is on the rise and the sequester is a great scapegoat for the Democrats. If they can pin the sequester’s origins on the GOP (or, even better, The Tea Party), they have a perfect alibi for if (but more likely, when) the double-dip recession hits. They keep mentioning “hurting job growth” so that there will be plenty of soundbites for the lapdog media to play once they’re out of the proverbial dog house and allowed back into their master’s house.
