The Bleak Future

If Obama wins a second term its trajectory is already written in the history of his first[1]:

Mr. Obama has governed from the left not because he miscalculated his priorities but because these are his priorities. His first term is best understood as a race to put himself in the pantheon of the great progressive Presidents–Wilson, FDR, LBJ–who expanded the state’s control over the private economy and over the wants and needs of the American middle class.

The price of this governing choice includes a weak recovery, achievements like ObamaCare that are unpopular, the loss of the House in 2010, and a polarized electorate. Unable to run on his record, he has conducted a low-down re-election campaign based on destroying his opponent’s character. If the polls are right, even if he wins re-election, he will do so as the first President since Wilson to win with a smaller margin than he did the first time.

But for Mr. Obama, this won’t matter. His great progressive gamble will have paid off. His second term will be about preserving the government gains of his first term, especially ObamaCare, and using regulation to press government control wherever else he can.

This election, you’re voting for your children and grandchildren as well as yourself[2]. There is a bleak future waiting for them. For all practical purposes, you and they will become little more than serfs. Wards of the state. Your freedoms diminished and gradually withdrawn one by one.

Obama’s America is not America as it was supposed to be.

I have urged people to think[3] – hard – about what this election means. I’m asking you to think hard, again. We have this one chance to reverse course. To vote strategically[4] to give Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan the means to carry out the changes we need to stay free.

I will pray for my country tonight. I will vote tomorrow, on the day appointed by the constitution that I love; the constitution that has given me the opportunity I have had in my life to reach higher than my parents. I will do my duty as a citizen of a country that gave the world the best chance it has ever had to rise above “the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.”

I will also pray there are enough patriots to change this country’s course.

Vote for you and yours, as if the future depended on it.

It does.
