The Conservative Reaction To Obama’s State Of The Union Speech Last Night

Obama’s speech last night was a tedious laundry list of trivial programs mixed in with class warfare. It was a dull uninspiring speech from a failed President, made even more agonizing by the fact that at one time, people were comparing Obama’s human Hallmark card speeches from in 2008 to Reagan. If Obama started mimicking Reagan as a communicator, he’s finishing by sounding like Bush in his 2nd term.

Here are some the reactions to Obama’s speech.

* “Mr. President, stop the class warfare. Discourage your surrogates from making racial innuendoes. And Mr. President most of all, stop the blame game. …We must remind him, we the people are coming,” Cain said. “That’s the Tea Party message to Washington, the president, and his administration.” “We the people are coming and we know that we are up against goliath.” —
Herman Cain[1]

* “No feature of the Obama Presidency has been sadder than its constant efforts to divide us, to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others. As in previous moments of national danger, we Americans are all in the same boat. If we drift, quarreling and paralyzed, over a Niagara of debt, we will all suffer, regardless of income, race, gender, or other category. If we fail to shift to a pro-jobs, pro-growth economic policy, there will never be enough public revenue to pay for our safety net, national security, or whatever size government we decide to have.” — Mitch Daniels[2]

* “There need not be 7000 words, the length of the President’s speech, to break it down for you. John F. Kennedy said, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.’ Barack Obama’s State of the Union is all about letting you know that government is going to do everything for you and when it can’t keep its promises, it will take from the successful and give to you.” — Erick Erickson[3]

* “If we could only get Halliburton to sell this $15/gal biofuel to the Navy, then liberals would oppose it.” — David Freddoso[4]

* “President Punish Our Enemies wants to lower the temperature in Washington.” — Jim Geraghty[5]

* “(Obama) will always prefer a food stamp economy to a paycheck economy and call it fair.” — New Gingrich

* “Obama in 2008: I will lower the oceans. Obama in 2012: We’ll make it easier for farmers to spill milk.” — Jonah Goldberg[6]

* “Barack Obama used tonight’s State of the Union to stoke the fires of class warfare. It is clear that this President fundamentally doesn’t understand how jobs are created. Instead of taking responsibility for the failures of his Presidency, he has instead decided to double down on his failed policies that will undermine our free market economic system that is responsible for making America the greatest country on the planet.” — GOProud[7]

* “We’re ‘winning the race for our future’ so much that we’re not going to have a future because we’re spending it all today.” — John Hawkins[8]

* “You know why ‘green energy’ is ‘promising’? Because after hundreds of billions wasted, that ‘promise’ is still unfulfilled.” — Derek Hunter[9]

* “President Obama claims to want an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules. Yet he remains committed to the same old system of debt, deficits, bailouts, and cronyism that created our economic problems. The President speaks of giving us energy independence from unstable nations, yet he refuses to allow the type of development needed to achieve this goal, while at the same time his administration hands out favors to the politically connected — those given to the likes of Solyndra, who fail to produce jobs or energy but succeed in ripping off the taxpayers. …In the area of foreign policy and civil liberties, President Obama’s rhetoric may be different, but the substance of his polices – as shown by his administration’s defense of the TSA’s treatment of my son, Senator Rand Paul, is hardly ‘change we can believe in.’ No wonder more and more Americans, especially young people, are rejecting the phony alternatives of Obama and establishment Republicans and embracing my campaign to Restore America Now.” — Ron Paul

* “For nearly every eloquent thought our President expressed tonight, there are contradictions and hypocrisies in his actions and leadership preventing the fruition of a stated desire for jobs, a strong economy and energy efficiency. When President Obama says we should all play by the same rules, for instance, does he include the millions of Americans on food stamps and welfare who are reaping benefits of bad decisions? The bottom line and sad truth is that Obama’s speech was another big government bonanza. For all his reminiscing over the building of the Hoover Dam and Americans’ hard work ethic, his speech was rooted in what government is doing for us now that we apparently can no longer be expected to do for ourselves. It’s a real shame to see that he still seems to have no idea about the American way.” — Project 21

* “Obama has an idea: let’s spend more money! My God, if only we’d thought of that earlier!” — Ben Shapiro[10]
