US “Occupying” Haiti? Screw You, France.

No matter who the President is, Americans of all political persuasions have taken pride in helping nations in distress after natural disasters — and Haiti certainly qualifies. The country was a wreck BEFORE the earthquake and now 10% of the housing in the country may be destroyed, there may be more than 100,000 dead, and the government is almost totally non-functional.

In other words, it’s anarchy in the streets and of course, in a situation like that, who you gonna call? The UN? Russia? The EU? China? No, of course not — get serious. Everyone just expects the United States to take the lead in these situations and what thanks do we get?

The French minister in charge of humanitarian relief called on the UN to “clarify” the American role amid claims the military build up was hampering aid efforts.

Alain Joyandet admitted he had been involved in a scuffle with a US commander in the airport’s control tower over the flight plan for a French evacuation flight.

“This is about helping Haiti, not about occupying Haiti,” Mr Joyandet said.

Geneva-based charity Medecins Sans Frontieres backed his calls saying hundreds of lives were being put at risk as planes carrying vital medical supplies were being turned away by American air traffic controllers.
But US commanders insisted their forces’ focus was on humanitarian work and last night agreed to prioritise aid arrivals to the airport over military flights, after the intervention of the UN.

The diplomatic row came amid heightened frustrations that hundreds of tons of aid was still not getting through. Charities reported violence was also worsening as desperate Haitians took matters into their own hands.

…American military commanders have repeatedly stressed that they are not entering the country as an occupying force.

US soldiers in Port-au-Prince said they had been told to be discreet about how they carry their M4 assault rifles.

So, the ****ing French are accusing us of “occupying” Haiti? **** you and the horse rode in on, you worthless French ****heads. Why don’t we let the French handle this? I’m sure they’ll be able to get food and medical supplies in there by about the middle of 2011.

I’m so tired of parasitical, dying nations like France that can’t carry our nation’s jockstrap, endlessly b*tching about their betters. Oh, if France was in charge, things sure would be different! Well, you know what? France hit its peak about 200 years ago and it has all been downhill since then and that’s probably not going to change in our lifetimes.

Oh, but what about the UN? The United Nations isn’t a “has been” organization; it’s a “never was.” The only successes they’ve ever had have really been American/British successes they’ve claimed credit for.

You know what I genuinely look forward to seeing one day? Some major crisis, war, or disaster breaking out and having the US say, “Nah, we’re tired of being attacked, maligned, and whined at for saving your bacon. Let someone else take a shot at it.”

Update #1: Actually, this is a great point from the comments section:

“You know what I genuinely look forward to seeing one day? Some major crisis, war, or disaster breaking out and having the US say, “Nah, we’re tired of being attacked, maligned, and whined at for saving your bacon. Let someone else take a shot at it.”

That has happened several times.

Rwanda
Zimbabwe
Darfur
Congo

The results have been the same pretty much every time, mass exterminations, Child soldiers, and atrocities that defy all explanation.” — Bildo
