Congress To Fix The College Football National Championships? Wow, Is There Nothing They Can’t Do?
Written By : John Hawkins

Just when you think Congress can’t find a way to further involve themselves in every teeny-tiny bit of minutiae in America, they find a new way to surprise you:

A senator whose undefeated home state school was bypassed for the college football national championship last season urged President Barack Obama on Wednesday to ask the Justice Department to investigate the Bowl Championship Series, citing Obama’s own concerns about the way the top team is crowned in building a case for action.

“Mr. President, as you have publicly stated on multiple occasions, the BCS system is in dire need of reform,” Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said in a 10-page letter to Obama calling for an antitrust probe of the BCS. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter.

Shortly after his election last year, Obama said he was going “to throw my weight around a little bit” to nudge college football toward a playoff system.

Obama and Hatch are among the many critics of how the BCS — a complex system of computer rankings and polls that often draws criticism — determines its national champion.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

I’m not even going to use the “We’ve got a tanking economy, job losses, a mounting deficit, and a war on terrorism happening right now, so do we have time for this nonsense” line. Know why? Because no matter how many other problems we had solved, it would still be stupid for Congress to get involved in the college football playoff system. If a Constitutional Amendment was passed that specifically gave Congress the power to regulate the Bowl Championship Series, it would still be dumb for them to be involved in it.

The very fact that there are people in DC who believe that Congress should be involved in deciding how the college football national championship are run should scare the living Hell out of people. After all, if they’re getting involved in that, what’s next? Is Nancy Pelosi going to determine what you’re allowed to eat for dinner each night? Is Barney Frank going to be picking out what color rugs you can have in your house? Is Barack Obama going to be deciding what television shows you can be allowed to watch? When we have a government that sees no limits on its own power and no matter that is too small for it to regulate, our freedom is in much greater peril than we may realize.

Orin Hatch became shark food years ago after his unsuccessful jumping attempt. The voters of Utah should have dumped him 15 years ago.

He's just another member of the Beltway party and has become a complete waste of oxygen.

Well he's at least suggesting the government tackle something on the intellectual level of the President and most of Congress. Most went to college, and they're all familiar with meaningless polls.

Better they deal with that instead of things way abouve their level of knowledge and experience like business, the economy, foreign affairs, and social issues.

Let's face it, keeping score in the games is where the problem lies. Just play the games, don't keep score, and everyone wins. At the end of the season, every team gets a trophy for being the national champion. That is the leftist answer to this major problem.

I would love for Congress and President to spend a lot of time on this. In fact, the best thing that can happen to this nation is that we all complain to them about such small, insignificant, BS problems that they are compelled to spend a lot if not most of their time on it. That way they CANNOT do any serious harm elsewhere. One can hope…

Congress has more pressing issues to deal with like steroids in baseball.

Do I smell another tsar in the works? We need a College Football Tsar – yeah, that's the ticket!

Preferably it will be someone who has never heard of college football, and who has either a documented history of claiming that organised sports is a 'capitialist ploy to numb the minds of the workers', or who has advocated that all students be required to play at least one season of college football in order to understand the plight of the college football player.

This is, like most things, a matter of dollars & cents.

The lower-TV-rated conferences want a bigger cut of the pie.

  • drothgery

On one hand, Congress certainly has more important things to do than much around with the college football postseason. On the other hand, the bowls-and-polls system sucks. On the gripping hand, if they're talking about college football, they aren't screwing up anything important.

  • RWNReader2

By the time Democrats are finished, teams with native american mascots, or too many white players will become ineligible for the national championship.

  • D-Vega

I thought too many white players automatically made you incapable of winning a national championship.

  • RtWingNtCase

I don't even have the words to express how stupid it is for Congress to get involved…

Was it Jimmy the Greek that said something about being bred as better athletes? Got him fired. The joke above, while not offensive to me and kinda witty, would get a Dennis Miller fired but not a Keith Olbermann.

Isn't it nice that you can make a joking remark like that and not be deluged with charges of 'racism' and cries for your dismissal/firing/removal. Bet your remark wouldn't have fared so well on some of the more left-leaning forums on the web.

  • D-Vega

That's not my fault, Canuck. If its funny, its funny.

Jimmy the Greek should not have been fired for what he said.

But if it makes you feel better, I'll withdraw my offer to purchase the NFL team.

Well I agree the football championships are a serious mess and need fixing but does anyone really trust the federal goverment to fix anything?
