Hey, Barack, Maybe ‘Gun Nuts’ Aren’t so Crazy After All

I supposed that if I had to choose one aspect of the current regime I most detest, it would have to be the soul-crushing violations of man’s right to be free. A close second, however, is the fact that the current administration makes me sound crazy.

Think about it: try describing aloud the stated scandals that have emerged from the Obama Administration. Detail out loud the apparent culpability of our government in running guns to dangerous Mexican cartels as an excuse for stricter gun laws. Shout out about Benghazi, IRS thuggery and the monitoring of the, supposedly, free press and at the end, look back on how crazy the diatribe would have sounded to someone even five years ago.

What we know already about the scandals the Obama Administration has had a hand in would have seemed like the ramblings of the tinfoil-hat adorned half-a-decade ago. Now, these inescapable revelations are found on the cover of reputable magazines and newspapers while the Obama administration tries to downplay their significance.

However, since every cloud has a silver lining (or so I am told), gun rights activists have been offered an unexpected gift. After months of campaigning and pledging that America would see meaningful gun control legislation passed on a national level, the President has failed to deliver (thanks, in large part, to patriots who stood firmly against tyranny).

Rather than accept this loss like big boys, anti-gunners attempted to upturn the chessboard and pledged to continue the assault on our Second Amendment rights. The problem, however, is that they spent months framing the debate in a way that would come back to haunt them.

The president and various other anti-gun rights crusaders attempted to mock those who would suggest that firearms are necessary to maintain a free country. The left targeted the notion that our government could ever go corrupt and that such silliness was just paranoia.

Obama even declared in Denver,[1]

“You hear some of these quotes – ‘I need a gun to protect myself from the government.’ ‘We can’t do background checks because the government’s going to come take my guns away.’ The government’s us. These officials are elected by you.”

Weeks later, Obama urged students to reject notions of a tyrannical government. He said,[2]

“Still, you’ll hear: voices that incessantly warn of government: as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s the root of all our problems, even as they do their best to gum up the works; or: that tyranny always lurks just around the corner. You should: reject these voices. Because what they suggest is that our brave, creative,: unique experiment in self-rule is just a sham: with which we can’t be trusted.”

Since then, all hell has broken loose and the irony is almost too much to take.

One scandal has spilled over into another and the Obama Administration is up the proverbial creek without a paddle. While they do their best to spin the narrative, whatever success they might achieve will not undo the damage done to the message they worked so hard to craft that said, “Don’t worry about relinquishing rights; our government is on the level and would never victimize you.”

Democrat Joe Manchin, who declared that he would continue to fight for the passage of gun control, was forced to bend to the realities of the political climate. On a recent radio show, Manchin was asked if the fears by many that government has the capacity for tyranny might be stoked amidst the revelations of the past few weeks. Manchin replied,[3]

“Absolutely – I agree 1,000 percent. People are saying, ‘Joe, we read your legislation, it makes all the sense in the world and we’re for that legislation – we’re just afraid government won’t stop there.’”

I would love nothing more than to trust my government; but I don’t. I cannot consider that a fault of mine as they have done little to warrant a modicum of trust in a very long time. Because we can never fully trust our government, we can never acquiesce to disarmament, nor can we give them the tools to slowly stride to that end.
