The Badger State: Carry ‘em if you got ‘em.

Guns, that is. Got one? Carry it! At least, one local DA says so:[1]

A Wisconsin prosecutor said he won’t enforce a host of state weapons laws after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled this week Americans have a right to own a gun for self-defense.

Jackson County District Attorney Gerald R. Fox…

…who describes himself as “a Democrat with Libertarian leanings”…

…said in a statement he will no longer prosecute Wisconsin’s prohibitions on carrying concealed weapons, transporting uncased or loaded guns in vehicles, carrying guns in public buildings and taverns and carrying switchblades and butterfly knives. He said the Supreme Court’s ruling renders those statutes unconstitutional.

I’m not entirely sure he’s correct about that, especially if:[2]

Justices made a point of saying the decision did not overrule “long-standing prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons or the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings.”

But, he’s a District Attorney, and I’m not. Even if he’s wrong, he can still choose not to prosecute.

Anti-gun extremist reaction was predictable:[3]

Peter Hamm, a spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said he was stunned.

Stunned!

He said Fox is inviting crime into his county and if he won’t enforce the state’s laws he should be removed from office.

How does Mr. Hamm feel about Arizona’s anti-illegal-immigration law, I wonder?

We should note: Wisconsin and Illinois are the only two states that allow no concealed weapons at all. So I’m sure Mr. Hamm remains in those two states, always and forever, never leaving them. It’s the only way to make sure you’re safe.

“To announce this publicly, to tell all these would-be scofflaws they can go ahead and break the law, makes matters worse,” Hamm said.

Of course, actual scofflaws are already breaking the law, no matter what Mr. Fox does. But, pshaw.

Fox, a Democrat with self-described Libertarian leanings, faces re-election in 2012.

So this isn’t a purely election-related stunt.

He said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press but if the Brady Campaign wants to mount a recall drive, the organization should “bring it on.”

What a cowboy! Here’s where Jackson County is:

[4]

Hardly the most liberal place in Wisconsin, but not the most conservative, either. More rural than urban, certainly. Somehow I doubt Mr. Fox is in much trouble.
