Lisa Theris is arguably one of the luckiest women to continue to walk this planet.
She was lost in the Alabama wilderness for three weeks before she finally managed to make it to the wood line and flag down a passing car.
Theris is a 25 year-old Hooter’s waitress and a radiology student. She went missing on July 23rd after hanging out with Manley Davis and Randall Oswald, who broke into and robbed a hunting lodge in Midway. They were promptly arrested after the theft.
Theris didn’t know they were going to be doing this and didn’t want to be involved once she found out. So she ran.
Unfortunately, she was unfamiliar with the area and quickly got lost among the mass of trees. It probably didn’t help that she did this at night, also.
She had no shoes or shelter for three weeks and survived by eating berries and wild mushrooms while drinking water from creeks and ponds.
John Hawkins's book 101 Things All Young Adults Should Know is filled with lessons that newly minted adults need in order to get the most out of life. Gleaned from a lifetime of trial, error, and writing it down, Hawkins provides advice everyone can benefit from in short, digestible chapters.
Upon being examined at the hospital, it was discovered that she had lost 50 pounds and was significantly weakened by the time she spent lost in the woods. She was also covered in scratches, bruises and bug bites from her battle with nature.
She returned home to her family, who say that while she might be weak, her spirit is strong.
Her brother Will says that she is “standing strong and full of jokes as ever.” Her sister didn’t have quite the same optimistic view.
“She is severely weakened, she is in pain, she is emaciated. There is not an inch of her that has not been affected.”
It’s a miracle that this woman was found and that she didn’t die out there in the woods. It’s a possibility that she could have eaten something poisonous, starved to death or died of thirst.
I love stories with happy endings.
