MS-13 has become a feared name in the United States. It’s not only the fastest growing gang in the United States, but also among the most violent. While the gang was originally founded in Los Angeles, it is now headquartered in El Salvador and is made up of a large number of illegal immigrants. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made it his mission to fight the spread of MS-13 throughout the country and the Justice Department just scored a huge win.
Wednesday, an announcement was made that a law enforcement task force had taken out MS-13’s leadership in Los Angeles. The task force, which was made up of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, arrested a large number of MS-13 members and associates, and then the Department of Justice was able to bring RICO charges against 44 people.

“This case has targeted the leadership and most violent actors of the MS-13 street gang in Los Angeles, as well as MS-13’s links to the Mexican Mafia,” Deirdre Fike, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, said. “This operation will have a significant impact on this violent gang and their overall ability to maintain control over law-abiding citizens.”
This is in addition to recent moves by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which targeted gangs across the country and arrested over 1,000 gang members, many of whom were illegal immigrants and will be deported. Still, MS-13 continues to be a major threat across the country.
The indictment revealed that there are over 10,000 MS-13 members across the United States, with Los Angeles serving as a particularly important area. “MS-13 members in Los Angeles are sometimes called upon to provide input in other parts of the country,” the indictment read. But still, this will strike a major blow to MS-13, with 12 of the people arrested forming a sort of leadership council for the gang.
