The Ultimate Problem With The Rubio/McCain Amnesty Plan
Back in 2007, as he ran for the Republican nomination for president, McCain ran into a torrent of opposition in the early caucus and primary states.
GOP voters didn’t buy a “comprehensive” solution to illegal immigration. They wanted to see the border secured first. When a politician proposed to grant what critics called “amnesty,” and also secure the border at the same time, the skeptics believed the “amnesty” would happen but the security would not.
“What I underestimated was the lack of trust and confidence in government,” McCain said in November 2007. “I mean, I said time after time, ‘We’ll enforce the borders. We’ll enforce the borders. Here’s X billion dollars to do it. We’ll enforce the borders.’ They just didn’t believe us.” — Byron York
I am strongly against amnesty. The most important thing we need to do is enforce our existing laws. We have existing immigration laws that are not being adequately enforced. Nothing will make it harder to enforce the existing laws, if you reward people who broke them. It demoralizes people who are going through the legal process, its a very clear signal of why go through the legal process, if you can accomplish the same thing if you go through the illegal process. And number two, if demoralizes the people enforcing the laws. I am not, and I will never support any effort to grant blanket legalization/amnesty to folks who have entered, stayed in this country illegally. — Marco Rubio
If John McCain shamelessly lied through his teeth about changing his position on illegal immigration to security first — and he did — and Marco Rubio shamelessly lied to conservatives about opposing amnesty in the first place — and he did — then, why in the world would you believe that they’re telling the truth when they promise you that if we legalize the status of illegals that are here today, we’ll get security later?
Essentially, all they’ve done is dusted off the McCain/Kennedy amnesty plan and promised to implement the security measures before illegals get full amnesty. Of course, that’s not really true because the moment their bill is signed, every illegal in the country today and every one that can sneak in between now and then and procure readily available fake documents will be allowed permanent legal status until they’re inevitably given citizenship.
In fact, what McCain/Rubio and the rest of the pro-amnesty crowd won’t admit is that they don’t want to implement tough security measures first precisely because it will work and drive millions of illegals out of the country. If that happened, then the money — for the big-Ag fatcats who’ve decided it’s more profitable to hire illegals, pass the costs on to the American people and funnel money to corrupt politicians is cheaper than paying American workers what they’re worth — would stop.
What it all comes down to is that guys like McCain and Rubio oppose sticking to the laws that are already on the books, but they’re promising that if you agree to amnesty, they’ll adamantly stick to much tougher laws down the line. Only an idiot would believe a lie that transparent.
