National Intel Director Clapper: Get Ready For ISIS Attacks On The U.S.

When James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, testified before Congress yesterday his assessment of America’s national security situation was so dire that he admitted he was bringing a “litany of doom” to the attention of the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence committees.

Per Clapper, the North Koreans have re-started their plutonium reactor. That’s a failure of American diplomacy. He also said the Syrian dictator Bashir Assad is in a stronger position than he was six months ago. He said the Russians and Chinese are stepping up cyberattacks on American digital infrastructure. Clapper noted that Iranian cooperation with the recently-signed nuclear deal his administration made with them is less than enthusiastic (as is the prognosis for that deal to actually stop Iran’s march to a nuclear weapon).

And he said ISIS is going to hit us with terrorist attacks.

clapper and stewart testimony

Leaders of the Islamic State are determined to strike targets in the United States this year, according to senior U.S. intelligence officials.

Officials told lawmakers on Tuesday that a small group of violent extremists will attempt to overcome the logistical challenges of mounting such an attack.

In a testimony before congressional committees, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and other officials described the Islamic State as the ‘pre-eminent terrorist threat.’

The militant group can ‘direct and inspire attacks against a wide range of targets around the world’, Clapper said.

Marine Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, said the Islamic State will probably conduct additional attacks in Europe and then attempt the same in the U.S.

He said U.S. intelligence agencies believe IS leaders will be ‘increasingly involved in directing attacks rather than just encouraging lone attackers.’

Clapper also said al-Qaida, from which the Islamic State spun off, remains an enemy and the U.S. will continue to see cyber threats from China, Russia and North Korea, which is also ramping up its nuclear program.

The only way to describe the testimony is “apocalyptic.” It’s not a particularly ringing endorsement for the two terms of Barack Obama’s leadership on the world stage.
