What I Think Of Political Correctness

There is nothing wrong with using the words oriental, niggardly, or minority in a conversation. However, I don’t like the word “African-American”, or anything-American for that matter. We’re all Americans and those dashes just divide us unnecessarily. Likewise, we’d all be better off if we were willing to admit that there was nothing wrong with the Willie Horton commercial but Affirmative Action is just as repulsive, wrong, and discriminatory as the Jim Crow laws were.

Regardless of what our politically correct courts think, I want the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance and I do think burning the flag in protest should be illegal. Also, I generally agree with the statement ‘a man should shed blood before he sheds tears’, but I do choke up a little sometimes when I hear ‘Proud to be an American’ or the ‘Star Spangled Banner.’ I’m not interested in being an ‘internationalist’, to the contrary, I agree with what Stephen Decatur said, ‘Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations, may she always be in the right, and always successful, right or wrong.’

Since we’re talking about American history, I think our children would be better served by learning about “dead white guys” like Jefferson, Madison, Adams, Hamilton, and Washington instead of books like “Heather Has Two Mommies.” When I was a child, I liked to play cowboys and indians, tag, & dodgeball and I see nothing wrong with those games today. Don’t worry, if the kids get too rough then their parents can spank them or even refuse to teach them how to shoot a gun as punishment. Oh and leave the Boy Scouts and 4H alone, they’re good for kids and they don’t deserve to have know-nothing bureaucrats hassling them.

Likewise, I’m opposed to environmental sexual harassment laws that make it a crime to have a swimsuit calendar at work, as well as hate crime legislation that assumes shooting someone in the head because you’re prejudiced is worse than shooting someone in the head because you want their wallet. Furthermore, since claims of ‘postpartum depression’ and ‘having a rough childhood’ don’t bring crime victims back from the dead, I don’t think they should be mitigating factors in anyone’s courtroom defense.

Speaking of a ‘defense’, it’s silly that one should have to be made for the names of sports teams like the Braves, Redskins and Indians. Those names were tributes, not slurs and they should be treated as such. Today it’s the names of sports franchises, but tomorrow will the politically correct among us be demanding that we change the names of Miami, Sioux City, or even the Dakotas because someone might get offended? If the rest of us can live with the Vikings, Fighting Irish, Celtics, and even the Fighting Whites then I think that no one should get too upset about the Braves.

On the immigration front, if you want to become a US citizen, you should get a Visa, learn to speak English, and drop your old culture like a hot potato when you get here. If the country you came from was so great, you would have never left to join our “melting pot” to begin with. Forget the “salad bowls” the politically correct say we need, I’ve seen enough of those in countries like Afghanistan and Bosnia to know that’s not what we want here. Besides, why not ‘melt’ into the same culture that produced George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Adams, Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Ron Reagan, Thomas Edison, Martin Luther King, Alexander Graham Bell, Bill Gates, Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth, Jessie Owens, Michael Jordan, and Elvis Presley?

In short, if we as a society ignored the divisive politicians and the people who make a living advocating these silly politically correct ideas, we’d all be better off. That’s what I think, whether the politically correct among us like it or not.
