Liberal Blockheads At Netroots Nation
Written By : John Hawkins

It’s fair to say that some conservatives expect too much out of Republicans from liberal states or districts, but only the complete blockheads would go this far,

Markos Moulitsas, founder of the Daily Kos blog and an organizer of the first such annual conference five years ago, said he and his followers are disinclined to help Democratic candidates simply to preserve the party’s big majorities.

“There’s a lot of Democrats I’ll be happy to see go,” Moulitsas said in an interview. “I’ll celebrate when Blanche Lincoln is out of the Senate. There is a price to be paid for inaction and incompetence. We’re not getting much done with 59 [Democratic senators], so if we’re down to 54, who cares?”

Moulitsas went on to suggest that a smaller Democratic majority in the House might be better for advancing a more progressive agenda. “If 20 Blue Dogs lost their seats, nobody’s going to care,” he said. “That’s their problem and I’m not going to cry about them. To me, a more cohesive caucus might be a better deal moving forward than one in which the Blue Dogs need to be appeased.”

It was understandable when conservatives were angry after the Bush years. They felt like the GOP had the House, the Senate, and the presidency and conservatism still went backwards. Government got bigger, spending went up, and the only major piece of conservative legislation that was passed were tax cuts with an expiration date.

On the other hand, you have to go all the way back to the Johnson Administration to see the kind of legislative lurch to the Left that has occurred under Obama. And for it to occur, a lot of blue dog Democrats had to take politically suicidal votes on legislation that was generally unpopular in America and particularly unpopular in their districts.

Take Blanche Lincoln, for example. Did she vote for TARP (Yes, I know it started under Bush, but it’s still going and it’s more popular with libs than conservatives)? Yes. The stimulus? Yes. Cash for Clunkers? Yes. Health care? Yes.

But, she opposed a public option, she’s not in favor of card check, and she’s against cap and trade. The libs hate her because of that. But, the reality is that she destroyed her political career to support even the programs that she did. She’s down by 20 points right now to John Boozman and it would take a miracle to save her seat. What’s the point of having a candidate who agrees with you on every issue who can’t get elected? It would be like running a Jim DeMint clone in Maine — a waste of time.

Let me also add that all the remaining legislation that the Left wants — like Card Check, a bigger stimulus, cap and trade, comprehensive immigration reform, etc. — will be dead on arrival after all those blue dogs are replaced by Republicans. In other words, if they’re unhappy now, they’re going to be really unhappy from here on out because barring unforeseen events, this is probably going to one of those once every half a decade moments in the sun that each party gets experience. (PS: Don’t get too excited, conservatives, because ours was Reagan).

Here’s the reality that people like Kos don’t comprehend: Not only does liberalism not work, not only is it a cruel and uncaring ideology, it isn’t popular. If the American people had realized how liberal Barack Obama really was, he would have lost the election. Moreover, they understand very well what the Democratic agenda is and they aren’t punishing the Democrats for not pushing more of it through; they’re punishing them because they hate what they’ve done so far.

“once every half a decade moments in the sun”

Did you mean to say “once every half a CENTURY moments in the sun”?

Kos sounds as out of it as some of the folks on our side did in the fall of 2008. I think sometimes people miss the forest for the trees. Not getting elected is not a winning political strategy.

Not allowing anything to get done even though the country voted for it, is your side's political strategy, to the detriment of the country as a whole.

Clearly the polls show they did NOT vote for the Obama agenda. See, that's the difference between an honest salesman and a snake-oil seller. The American people wanted the honest guy and did not realize they got the snake-oil guy until later.

“Not allowing”? What kind of joke is that? The Republicans are in the minority. They don't even have enough votes to fillibuster. All they can do is what they've done: call attention to the fact that they are opposed to the President's and the majority's policies and explain why they are opposed. That that strategy is enough to derail any of the President's and majority's agenda only shows how widely their agenda is opposed.

      • the_hawk

It's your side that's not allowing it. There are enough Democrats, Blue Dogs or not, that have not voted for a lot of the Obama agenda. That point is even alluded to by Kos, when he says that, “If 20 Blue Dogs lost their seats, nobody's going to care.”

You know what they say Pete: If they took no out of the dictionary, the Republicans would be speechless.

        • TheDickNixon

blah blah blah. 59 seats in the Senate and majority control of the House.

          Democrats=incompetent.

        • Mediumheadboy

And if lies were outlawed, Democrats would.

Petey, apparently you've internalised that whole 'victim mentality' so thoroughly that you see victimhood in having solid majorities in two or the three branches of government.

“Oh woe is us, we only have control of the House, Senate and White House. If only we had control of the judicial branch. We're suffering under the tyranny of the minority. Pity us.”

The objective facts of the matter are that with a Democratic House, a Democratic Senate, and a Democrat in the White House, the whole agenda should have been a slam-dunk. So now that it's not come to pass, in large measure because your leader has precious few leadership skills, it would seem that your only recourse is to paint yourselves as victims of the evil Republican minority. Let's see, since we're a minority, it can't be a “vast right-wing conspiracy” anymore – you're going to have to come up with a new catchphrase, aren't you? But I have faith in you Petey, what with your superior intellect and that Communications degree, it's a piece of cake, right?

“There they go again” as the late great Ronald Reagan would say. You guys take everything that Obamamau says as gospel. You guys are insane.

“Let me also add that all the remaining legislation that the Left wants — like Card Check, a bigger stimulus, cap and trade, comprehensive immigration reform, etc. — will be dead on arrival after all those blue dogs are replaced by Republicans.”

This may be true but I wouldn't bet a dime on it. We are still talking about politicians here :)

    • gfchicago

And if by the grace of God the Republicans don't screw up and manage to take the house back, we still have the lame duck session of congress to worry about before we actually take back the house in January of '11.
