Those Evil Koch Brothers Have An Awesome Highly Unionized Workforce..Wait, What?
Written By : William Teach

The Left’s current pet target….well, one of them, as Sarah Palin and the TEA Party are still high on their Bitch Meter….., the Koch brothers, have some explaining to do for why they are so evil

A number of organizations are advocating a boycott of the products that come from companies owned by the Koch family. This is problematic for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it could potentially hurt the wrong people.

The Koch brothers own Georgia Pacific. It is an American consumer goods company that makes everyday products like facial tissue, napkins, paper towels, paper cups and the like. Their plants are great examples of American advanced manufacturing. Incidentally,

GP makes most of its products here in America. The companys workforce is highly unionized. In fact, 80 percent of its mills are under contract with one or more labor union. It is not inaccurate to say that these are among the best-paid manufacturing jobs in America.

This presents a dilemma and a paradox. While the Koch brothers are credited with advocating an agenda and groups that are clearly hostile to labor and labors agenda, the brothers company in practice and in general has positive and productive collective bargaining relationships with its unions.

Alas, this is no April Fool’s Day joke. In fact, the article, which goes on much further, is written by Jon Geenen, International President of the United Steelworkers, and published on the USW website. Mr. Geenen goes on to say that boycotting the Koch brothers’ products would not hurt them, but hurt the unionized members who make the products.

Really, the Koch brothers do not have a problem with unions: they have a problem with public sector unions. I’ve always wondered why we need unions for government employees. Unions were started to protect blue collar workers in typically dangerous and hard working conditions, like steel mills, from poor working conditions and harsh bosses/companies. Unions gave the workers in these conditions a chance to collectively bargain for better and safer working conditions, better pay, and better protection. Yet, here we have unions run by far left people who say that government is great and awesome, and is only there to benefit people, but they need a union to protect themselves from the evil government?

As stated many times, public unions serve: 1. get their employees absurd levels of benefits and pay that go far beyond the public sector, all at the expense of the American taxpayer, and b. get Democrats elected so that the members can get absurd levels of benefits and pay that go far beyond the public sector at the expense of the American taxpayer. And that needs to stop. It wasn’t that long ago when people said “you don’t go into government/teaching to make money.” We need to get back to that time, and stop fleecing the American public.

Funny how it’s the Koch brothers who are evil, not public sector teachers who send death threats.

Again, a country club conservative who knows nothing about unions. First of all, the USW Vice President is named Jon not Joe. Try to get the basic facts right.

Unions started as crafts guilds in Europe — not in America to improve working conditions. Public sector workers unify, elect representatives and bargain for better pay, benefits and working conditions, the same way private sector workers do. And for the same reason.

When I was in high school, my social studies teacher’s family was on food stamps. Frankly, I don’t think schools will attract the best and brightest to be teachers if they’ll earn so little money their families will have to subsist on food stamps. Wall Street argued that it could not attract the best and brightest without paying billions in bonus bucks, and you conservatives bought that — for your fellow country club members. But somehow you don’t think that applies to middle class public service workers.

When I graduated, the teachers had not unified to bargain with their employer. Now they have and pay has improved, and class sizes are smaller. That’s all better for American school children.

If that’s better for American school children, then why do they continuously score lower than school children in other countries? We spend an enormous amount of money on schools, yet they are turning out students who cannot pass a basic job interview, nor hold an adult conversation.

Oh look a union goon, trying to claim a working man is ‘country club’! Next you’ll be claiming Education is improving in the US despite all evidence to the contrary.

“When I was in high school, my social studies teacher’s family was on food stamps”

      What year was this?
      How large was this family?
How many people in this family worked?
Are you sure that this class was social studies and not socialism indoc 101?
How did you find out? For it seems really strange that a teacher would tell this to a bunch of HS students.

“Wall Street argued that it could not attract the best and brightest without paying billions in bonus bucks… But somehow you don’t think that applies to middle class public service workers”

It is against union rules to pay based upon performance and talent, so many high performing and talented teachers are treated exactly the same as really bad teachers.
Unlike on wall street, it is nearly impossible to fire bad teachers so “we” (the taxpayers) get stuck with them and paying a lot.

Easy enough to fix, we just need to introduce competition on the teacher level, where the bad will be gone – the good will stay.

I have no problem with good teachers being paid well and great teachers being payed very well. To follow along those lines, we should not be paying bad teachers at all.

I do like how you try to equate a justification of socialism to a purely free market example, which do you want? For you can not have both.

Yeah, clearly you got a poor education.

Introduce competition into public sector services and your argument might hold water. Government holds a monopoly on nearly all the services it provides, so it didn’t take long for unions to realize that it was a nice arrangement to donate heavily to the politicians that negotiated their contracts.

Politicians and union bosses take more and more, and expect that taxpayer to just cough it up. State budgets are collapsing, and unions are pretending paying 10% for their health care is a human rights violation and will put them in the streets.

It’s all about greed and power.

Frankly, I don’t think schools will attract the best and brightest to be teachers if they’ll earn so little money their families will have to subsist on food stamps.

How nice of you to intentionally hyper-polemicise the issue. Prior to teachers unions, I’d warrant that very, very few teachers earned so little that they qualified for food stamps. So isn’t couching your sentiment in terms of poor teachers unable to afford food, just a bit of over-wrought and over-dramatised exaggeration? I think it is.

But on to the issue of attracting the best and the brightest. I’ve been a senior leader in HR since the late 1980′s and I’ve held accountability for the recruitment function in several large organisations. I can tell you categorically, that the best and the brightest aren’t generally attracted to unionised positions, with the exception of some of the trades – and even there, the best and the brightest tend to gravitate toward entrepreneurial opportunities where their knowledge, skills and abilities are likely to make them real money. Because the best and the brightest tend to a) know who they are, and b) prefer to be judged on their own individual merits.

As examples, the best and brightest plumbers, carpenters, electricians, etc. aren’t going to come work for your unionised company – either they’ll set up their own shops, or they’ll go to work for a non-union competitor of yours where their expertise is more likely to be well-rewarded based on merit. Which leaves you recruiting middle of the pack to slightly above and below average performers. The best and the brightest tend to not even bother applying,

The issue is that unions favour those employees who are “behind the curve” on performance because they can ride on the coattails of those who perform “ahead of the curve”. One obvious result is that those who’re more productive, more creative, more risk-taking than the average employee are forced to accept rewards which are well behind what they might make were they left to their own devices.

Unions promote and venerate the idea of that people should be mediocre (using the meaning of mediocre as being neither good nor bad), middle of the pack, average. They’re diametrically opposed to the idea of meritocracy and individual recognition. Which is why the best and the brightest will never be attracted to union represented positions and union dominated occupations in great numbers.

When I graduated, the teachers had not unified to bargain with their employer. Now they have and pay has improved, and class sizes are smaller. That’s all better for American school children.

Better? If teacher’s unions are better for American school children, then why are American students falling progressively further back in the pack in performance when compared with students around the world on basic educational measures?

That fact stands in direct contravention to your hypothesis.

Graduation rates are abysmal in many large school districts; competence in basic reading, writing, math and science have fallen so precipitously that all universities have had to implement remedial courses in those subjects to bring high school grads up to a level of basic competency. Those aren’t the hallmarks of advancement in education performance.

That “devolution” of American students into second-rate performers has happened almost entirely since teachers unionised. That may be a coincidence of time, but if unions were indeed made up of the best and the brightest, why haven’t they led the way in developing effective strategies to counteract the decline? If unions were so good for students, why, pray tell, do we rank as low as we do on some many assessments of educational competence and why are we still declining?

Increased pay for teachers and decreased class size have not stopped the decline in actual performance of the “product” of education, has it?

Yeah, the left will hate the Koch brothers enough that one day they might move their factories to another country, then the left will hate them some more for taking the jobs away.

It’s hard to regard liberals as more than animals these days. They express blind rage toward any and everything that doesn’t play their collectivist and elitist game, and it’s beyond tiresome. The double standards, the hypocrisy. With the alternative media now strong enough to tell the truth about what they say, people realize that Oceania has not always been at war with Eurasia.

So why shouldn’t public sector employees have the same collective bargaining rights as private sector employees? One reason.

In Sweden’s social democratic system, half of the workers are employed in the public sector, half in the private sector. 89% of all workers have union representation. It seems to work out fine.

Hating unions is the equivalent of hating working people. Is this what the right wing is all about?

Wolf, you have a small grasp of history. Unions made you and the middle class possible. It’s just ingratitude if not greed to not praise them for their role in building the middle class.

Nonunion workers are paid less, sometimes only half, of what unionized workers are paid for the same work and skills. So, if you ever worked, you have unions to thank for your being able to support your family and maybe even send your kids to college.

        • http://www.patriotpost.com bthewolf

Unions didn’t make the middle class you ignorant twit. The middle class in the US has been around since the 1600s. You’re a fucking tool if you don’t realize that simple bit of history.

Non-union workers don’t always make less and often when they do the difference is offset by what the union member pays in dues. And unions did nothing for the industry I work in never have never will.

I support myself and put myself through college and my folks were firmly middle-class. So take classest ignorant BS and go back to grade school. It’s obvious by your lack of knowledge you haven’t learned more than the average 3rd Grader.

      1. Why should a government employee be allowed to strike against the government.

      2. Very few private sector employees have or want collective bargaining rights about 12%, why should be individuals be forced to accept what someone else bargains for you.

Sweden is just where it wants to be: liberal-socialist like the US, only more so as we don’t have a government run single payer medical system (except for Medicare and the VA medical system).

I don’t know what your definition of “socialist” is, but like many on this site, it is incorrectly equated with communism. That is a false equation, but it hasn’t stopped the less cerebral from making it.

To qualify for VA medical you actually have to serve this country – like me and trench have done.

Unlike you who actually takes away from it.

Then depending on; where, when, and how you served our VA benefits could be; free to varying degrees of costs to nothing at all.

The VA system is in no way socialist, for just to qualify, we had to serve our country in the military, and many of us got injured in the process.

So STFU and drop the VA from your talking points.

SPikey, I tried to be kind to you. BUT….your lifetime VA benefits come from the government, the taxpayers, in fact, and it is no less socialized for that reason. May I ask: should disabled people who did not serve in the military be denied benefits through social security and medicare because they did not earn them?

          • Anonymous

Easy: The difference is forced and choice.

Social security and medicare are forced upon the taxpayers.

I would be the last person to begrudge you your rightful medical benefits. But still, those benefits come from the government and they will continue throughout your life. I honor your service and hope that, unlike Wolf, you will make use of them, if only out of understanding that you deserve them.

Likewise, I do not begrudge the elderly or the disabled who receive medical care through the Medicare program. They paid for those benefits throughout their working lives through payroll deductions and it is not as if it is a gift from the government.

We are the government. It is not some fantasy land where elves print money and then throw it down upon us.

I do not use VA benefits. I pay for my own insurance, so that those in the VA that “need” services have the ability to use them.

And, I paid for my VA benefits through my service to this country.

Funny as small as it is Sweden has a social security system; as large as it is, the USA has a social security system, plus Medicare and other “socialist” protections. They all work fine. The population argument, ergo, does not work.

We are working at it, the last increment being Obamacare. But we will eventually have a liberal-socialist system that will rival Sweden.

And in our system, you will not be forced to eat ledefisk against your will. It will be perfect. Don’t worry. You’ll like it.
