Obnoxious Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings Tangles With Trey Gowdy, With Predictable Results

The ranking Democrat on the Benghazi Select Committee, Elijah Cummings, has set himself up as an Enemy Within on the committee and, particularly after the stupid use of the committee by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy as an example of how the GOP was taking Hillary Clinton down politically, Cummings has become very aggressive in efforts to delegitimize it and attempt to have it shut down.

But Cummings lacks both the intelligence and commitment of Benghazi Special Committee chairman Trey Gowdy, who has parried all of his attempts to “dirty up” the committee and embarrassed the Maryland Democrat. Cummings’ first volley was met by a devastating response which had the added benefit of fleshing out for the public the scope of the role former Clinton spin doctor and dirty-tricks operative Sid Blumenthal in suggesting State Department and national policy where Libya was concerned; given the result of Blumenthal’s counsel that caused more than a small stir.

But Cummings wasn’t finished – and neither was Gowdy.

Gowdy, a South Carolina Republican, has recently claimed that Clinton should have known that some of the information she received from her confidant Sidney Blumenthal was classified — and should have treated it accordingly.

According to BizPac Review, Cummins issued a response to that claim, saying Gowdy failed to check his facts regarding that assertion — suggesting that no classified material was emailed because the CIA had not asked that it be redacted from public disclosure. He then told Gowdy he owed Clinton an “immediate apology.”

Gowdy wasted no time setting the record straight. He fired back with a statement pointing out that the CIA “… did not inform the Committee that anything about the facts stated … ‘[was] wrong.’”

He then asked Cummins to “completely and accurately relate the facts rather than attempt to create an impression that is misleading based on an incomplete and selective recitation of the facts.”

“Whether Secretary Clinton received protected information from Sidney Blumenthal or simply recklessly wrong information from Sidney Blumenthal is relevant at some level,” Gowdy said.

“What is most important is to protect information that can endanger others… So, our position is consistent. Sources and methods of intelligence are among the most closely guarded information our government has,” he said.

“We will continue to redact that information and treat it with the highest level of confidentiality and sensitivity, and we would advise you to do the same,” he added.

Gowdy saved the best for last in a postscript in the letter: “My understanding is the CIA advised the Committee in a very brief email late Saturday night that it had reviewed the material in question and asked for no material to be redacted,” he wrote.

“I am envious of your staff’s ability to get information from this administration in less than 45 minutes on a weekend.  This is something the majority Members struggle to do on weekdays.  Perhaps you would be willing to help us gain access to the information the Committee has been seeking from the administration for over half a year now,” he concluded.

At RedState, Leon Wolf has a very good piece outlining that the Democrats are counting on three lies to save Hillary over Benghazi. A sampling…

Hillary Clinton is coming to testify before Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC)‘s committee on Thursday, and given the fact that her Presidential campaign is now in full swing, the stakes will doubtless be higher than ever. Accordingly, Democrats who are desperate to preserve her viability as a nominee (knowing full well that Bernie Sanders would be a general election disaster) have released an increasingly desperate and laughable set of attacks against the Benghazi committee, thinking that in so doing they can also put to rest the email scandal that has become a cancer on the Clinton campaign.

These attacks, which are clearly coordinated, all seek to place one of three lies into the Conventional Wisdom about the work of the Benghazi Committee – each more desperate than the last and each more contemptible for its brazen stupidity.

The lies: deliberate conflation of the work of Gowdy’s committee with that of the FBI, which is looking though Clinton’s e-mails (Gowdy’s committee is solely investigating those emails that involve Libya and Benghazi), that Republican critics of the committee like Rep. Richard Hanna or cheerleaders like McCarthy have a clue what they’re talking about (something Gowdy forcefully suppressed over the weekend) and that Gowdy somehow committed a crime by “outing” the very CIA source Clinton apparently discussed on her unsecure private e-mail.

None are true. But nothing the Democrat Party brings to the public seems to be true anymore. And that goes double for Cummings, who can’t stop telling stupid provable lies even when it’s obvious Gowdy will humiliate him for them.
