Bill Maher Thinks You’re Stupid
Written By : Susannah Fleetwood

This past Friday night, Bill Maher broke with tradition. Instead of just having a panel composed of three Leftist yes men who hang on his every word, Maher had a panel of two conservatives (Andrew Breitbart and Amy Holmes) and one progressive (Seth MacFarlane, the creator of The Family Guy).

Things were humming along quite nicely until the topic of health care came up. Maher seemed flummoxed by the fact Americans didn’t appreciate just how much President Obama had done for them by shoving ObamaCare down their throats. Here’s what he said:

“It would be popular if the Democrats would talk about it more.”

Genius! It’s all because that Obama just hasn’t given enough speeches about health care yet. There’s no other reaction possible to such gibberish than to roll one’s eyes.

Then, when Amy Holmes explained to Maher that the Democrats had “talked endlessly” about Obamacare, and “their agenda was rejected by the American people”, Maher had the following reply:

It’s because they’re stupid.”

Here we go again.

Oh my–where to even begin. First of all, Mr. Maher, we can’t all be Einsteins like yourself. I mean, nothing says “intellectual giant” like calling a pregnant girl a “Hillbilly heroine”, dressing up as the late Crocodile Hunter for Halloween, implying that a US Senate candidate is a “witch”, or being a proud wh*re-monger. Mr. Maher, when I grow up, I want to be just like you.

Second of all, judging by the way that he treats his body, Mr. Maher must have some magical fairy godmother who will give him a second body when he finally wears out the one he has now. Most of us aren’t so lucky, though – we are stuck with the one body that God gave us. Therefore, we tend to be a little protective of it (as well as our wallets, during a recession). (Elderly people, and people like me with chronic illnesses, are particularly protective our bodies.) I know, it sounds silly to you Mr. Maher.

So, when we hear about the fact that Massachusetts (which now has government run health care) has the highest health insurance premiums in the country, and now has the longest wait times to see a doctor (in Boston it is now 70 days to see an OBGYN, whereas it used to be 40 days), we tend to get a little worried.

Furthermore, I’m not sure if Bill Maher is aware of it or not, but the word on the street is that socialized medicine isn’t doing well in England or Canada. For example, health care rationing has gotten so bad in the former, that some people pull their own teeth (they use vodka and a pair or pliers). Acutely ill people wait at least 23 hours to be admitted to the hospital, some towns in Canada hold a monthly lottery to see who will get a family physician, and people in both countries wait an average of six months to see a neurologist–and then six more months for an MRI. (See the video embedded below.)

Oh, but there is a silver lining here. There is a clinic in Canada where you can get an MRI or a CT scan the day after you injure yourself–you just have to walk on four legs for this clinic to see you.

What’s more, British Parliament member, Daniel Hannan, told Glenn Beck pretty similar horror stories about the British National Health Service or NHS. Mr. Hannan explained that you are “immediately sent to the back of the cue” and that, even if you are in severe pain, they won’t let you pay for pain medication–you must just sit and wait for hours in pain. Hannan went on to explain that the average waiting time for a knee replacement is twelve months, surgery for a herniated disc is five months, and cataract surgery is eight months. Not to mention, if you can’t work during this waiting period, then you are losing income. (So much for the whole “free health care” thingy.) Then Mr. Hannan added the following zinger:

“The worst thing to be in our system is elderly”.

Moreover, Mr. Hannan explained that health care is the single biggest item of the government budget, and that the NHS is the third largest employer in the world (it employs 1.4 million people). Not to mention, most of the employees aren’t doctors or nurses – they are administrators. In other words, if we in the US get something like the NHS, there’s no undoing it. We’re stuck with it for good.

So, in conclusion, there is a lot that we don’t know yet about European socialized medicine, and what we do know, doesn’t sound very good. Therefore, the American people exercised caution before jumping headfirst into a sea of debt and rationed health care. Unlike their leaders, the American people demonstrated wisdom. Wise people exercise caution and look before they leap; foolish people just jump in head first, consequences be damned.

And finally, Mr. Maher, I realize that you freely admit to wanting European socialized medicine, but most Americans don’t. Therefore, it’s your job to try to persuade them that you are right. However, neither you, nor Seth MacFarlane, could win the debate with the other two conservatives on the panel. (In fact, Maher even turned to MacFarlane earlier on in the health care debate and said, “Help me out anytime,” but MacFarlane just shrugged his shoulders cluelessly and mumbled something about the public option.) So, since you didn’t have the facts on your side and couldn’t convince people that you were right, you resorted to name-calling. Mr. Maher, calling people “stupid” doesn’t make you sound intelligent, enlightened, witty, urbane, or help you to win a debate that you are so obviously losing. It just makes you sound immature…. and dare I say it: stupid.

Smart people know you can't simply look at the facts and conclude these policies are/will be failures. They have to look deeper and make decisions based on how they feel.

Forget the numbers, do you feel that giving free healthcare to dying old grandmothers is a nice thing? Or would you prefer to throw them in the streets and have them trampled to death by rightwing jackboots so their skin can be processed and used to make more rightwing deathboots? Huh?!?!?! Is that what you want, old people and uh . . orphans too, adorable little orphans killed by greed and rich people and other negative nouns.

    • http://www.cavalierx.com CavalierX

“would you prefer to throw them in the streets and have them trampled to death by rightwing jackboots so their skin can be processed and used to make more rightwing deathboots?”

My only pair of rightwing deathboots is getting old, and the right one is kinda scuffed where a dirty hippie tried to bite me last year as I trampled him, so I could really use a new pair of deathboots…

It's hard to believe that we feel that government run health care is only good enough for our Veterans and elderly. The rest of us deserve more, because we are so much better than our Veterans or elderly, we can't be subjected to such a system. A health care system that we create the rules for and fund.

    • http://www.cavalierx.com CavalierX

“It's hard to believe that we feel that government run health care is only good enough for our Veterans and elderly.”

It's hard to believe that anyone believes government health care is good enough for anybody. Long waits, denied services, sub-standard care, shoddy and unclean hospitals, mixed-up procedures, stacks and stacks of forms to fill out… who would wish that kind of horror on their worst enemy? Oh, wait… you Leftists wish it on America.

    • Hotspur1

“The rest of us deserve more, because we are so much better than our Veterans or elderly, we can't be subjected to such a system. A health care system that we create the rules for and fund.”

And how are we better? What is the source of our innate superiority?

      • Guest

I don't recognize your ID so I will tell you. It was SARCASM. A lot of these folks posting claim that they support our armed forces, but in the same breath say that the health care system we are providing for our Vets. is not satisfactory to meet their own needs.(it's good enough for our Vets and our elderly but not good enough for me) Wouldn't it be nice to not require Alaskan Vets to make a two day trip, one way, to get to the VA Hospital when there are hospitals located close to their home. Those are extreme cases, but two hour commutes are pretty common in the other 49 states. You may say 2 hours isn't a long way to travel, and it may not, but you may also not be dealing with a disability when you have to go to the Doctor to get a prescription.

        • Kingfisher

(it's good enough for our Vets and our elderly but not good enough for me)

It is obvious that you are a clueless Obama asskisser since I have provided personal experience that Medicare is not good for seniors.

We're still waiting for any type of supporting claims from you but I'm confident that we will not receive any.

You also are ignoring any claims from vets who state that the VA is not good to vets.

It is obvious that your mind is closed and refuses to receive facts.

          • Guest

“You also are ignoring any claims from vets who state that the VA is not good to vets.” Am I? Or am I pointing out that those who say they support our Vets, refuse to assist in making the necessary changes to improve the system?

        • Hotspur1

But you are forgetting something. Even with all of those vets and their spouses and dependents, how many are we dealing with? You're saying that a system that is good enough for our vets will be able to handle the rest of the country. I do not have that faith in the government.

        • percivalcreek

Those are extreme cases, but two hour commutes are pretty common in the other 49 states.

          Yes. They are.

So let me get this straight: Your solution is to make everybody suffer with expanded government-run care?

In my opinion and my experience, the VA system should be improved … by eliminating it and moving OUT from under the burden of government.

Private clinics. Contract out. The billions and billions of dollars to be saved would provide better care, easier access and lower overall cost than the current system.

But no. People like you want to go the other way and provide sub-standard care for everyone.

          • Mr. EMT

Try four and ten hour commutes.

From Salem Virginia VA hospital, to Richmond (closest but usually full VA hospital) or Salem to Asheville North Carolina, just ten hours down the road. (alternative when Richmond is full)

          • Rickvid in Seattle

            Shared misery, the socialist ideal!

        • Mr. EMT

          You are misrepresenting facts.
Find someone on the right who does not feel that he VA care system is entirely unsatisfactory for our vets. People on the right were trying to improve that care for years before obamao jumped on the health care bandwagon and stuck his fingers in the money pot.
And remember your history, it was obamao who wanted our vets to pay for their own combat injuries.
Bottom line, free care is not free, ask our vets who gave their flesh and blood for the free care they get, and tell me what the hell you have done to earn free health care that compares with their sacrifice?

          • Guest

Scroll up, and you can see a few: “Find someone on the right who does not feel that he VA care system is entirely unsatisfactory for our vets.”

          • Mr. EMT

Waiting for you to name one, moron.

    • David_USAF_RET

That's the part that libs don't understand. We don't think that government run healthcare is good enough for our vets or elderly. We've seen the horrors of the VA medical system, we know that Medicare denies more people more care than any private insurer. We've seen all that and know that Government run healthcare is not good enough for anyone, which is why we try to defeat it.

      • Don_cos (USN RET)

        Amen Brother!

    • UFKA_Smithwick

Many of us are not happy with veterens benefits, medicare or medicaid either.

Maybe we could put them all on the same health plan as Nancy Pelosi or Barack Obama?

    • percivalcreek

It's hard to believe that we feel that government run health care is only good enough for our Veterans and elderly.

Spoken like a fool who hasn't the first clue as to how shitty those two systems really are.

Ever consider those of us who've worked within the VA system – as both providers and recipients – are opposed expanding government-run health care for a reason?

Would that ever cross your mind?

      • Guest

By seeing and working within the system, your response is to disolve the system? Not improve upon the system? I think that is the primary problem with the GOP, they are so short sited. They don't think of the long term implications of their actions, just immediate results.

        • http://www.patriotpost.com bthewolf

That's not what he said! The system we had a year ago before Odramacare would work just fine Vets and the elderly, as well as the rest of us. Odrama want's to move the system from good(the old system) to shitty(VA/Medicare) instead of from good(the old system) to great(less regulation, inter-state insurance sales, tort reform, ending corporate health insurance).

          • Mahatma

Wrong. Gotta love the tort reform meme.

          • http://www.patriotpost.com bthewolf

Got to love unsubstantiated statements, by liberal idiots. And yes tort reform would lower direct costs to providers and their insurers. In so doing the savings is passed to the the patient. But I'm sure you have proof that it doesn't.

Oh and you made no response to the rest of my points, asshatma, why is that?

  • http://www.cavalierx.com CavalierX

“Therefore, the American people exercised caution before jumping headfirst into a sea of debt and rationed health care. Unlike their leaders, the American people demonstrated wisdom.”

Also unlike our leaders, the American people will have to suffer under the system they have forced upon us.

  • Kingfisher

It's hard to believe that we feel that government run health care is only good enough for our Veterans and elderly.

As someone who has taken care of two elderly people, I can assure you that government-run health care is NOT good enough for the elderly.

I would recommend that you learn something for a change before opening your pie-hole.

    • gfchicago

No kidding, I went through that whole gamete. My dad was retired Air Force and I had to fight tooth and nail to get him the treatment that he needed.

The U.S. lied to the soldiers that continued to re-up during the '60's and the '70's about what health care that they were going to provide for retirees of the Armed Services. My dad thought that he and my mother would be taken care of for life. It was just fortunate that my dad had purchased additional health insurance in '97 just two months before he had a massive heart attach and was diagnosed with non Hodgkins lymphoma.

I still had to fight the VA on a few things, as well as some of the well meaning doctors on the outside. One doctor had diagnosed that my dad had only 6 weeks to live because all of his organs were shutting down and wanted to amputate his legs in order to save his life, this was a VA doc by the way. I was absolutely furious, my dad called me and was so upset that he couldn't be with my mom and was terrified of having his legs cut off.

I finally got in touch with the doctor and asked him just what in the hell good would it do to cut off his legs, since you've only given him 6 weeks to live. His response to me was “that's a good point”. So I told him to put my dad in the same room in the rest home as my mom so that he would be able to spend his last days with her as per his request. That sparked off a whole different argument. The doc wanted to put him in a rehabilitation wing of the same rest home. So I had to remind him once again of his own diagnosis.

To put it simply the VA sucks. I have no problem with spending more money on the VA, because these guys in return for serving their country faithfully we promised in return health care in their golden years.

    • Guest

If you don't believe it is satisfactory, then how are you advocating for change within the VA and medicare? All I here is opposition to people on the gov. dole.

      • gfchicago

Evidently you missed my earlier post about the V.A….

        • Don_cos (USN RET)

          Gf

That's why I opted for Tricare Standard rather than Prime when I retired. I have to pick up some of the cost, but it allows me to seek services in the community.

          • Proud Infidel

I'm a deployed Guardsman, and I'm going to keep my Tricare Reserve after I demobilize, it takes about 3 months to get an appointment with a VA doctor, a sample of what Obamacare will be like!!

          • gfchicago

My mom and dad had Tricare, I'm not sure how the VA wound up involved in this whole thing. I know that once they hit the magical age of 65 something changed, I still haven't untangled the whole mess.

I had left it up to my brother to look out for my folks since he was living with them and I live in another state so it wasn't so easy for me to keep abreast of their medical care when this whole situation popped up.

I had no idea what the hell was going on other than the fact my dad was terrified and just wanted to be with my mom.

I just think that my brother did the best he could and was not used to questioning authority when it came to the doctors so he just went along with what ever they told him.

      • Kingfisher

You're proving my point every day.

We've debated the issue prior under one of your prior ID's. Yet you always fail to provide supporting evidence of the benefits of Medicare.

Interesting how you demand action from me yet what YOU done to support Obama's claims?

The good thing is that Bill Maher, in open display, shows who were facing. His argumentative thought and views, against what he deems to be the 'bad people' are like that of a spoiled child. I can't help but laugh at how him and his most loyal viewers are. If this is all those who support Obamacare have to hold it up there's going to be no problem in repealing the disastrous plan before it has any negative long-term effects on this nation.

  • President Friedman

Maher's show is usually worth watching when he has conservatives on there, because they reliably knock down his arguments until he gets frustrated and has to change the subject. It's fun to watch.

However, the show is pretty much unbearable when his panel is full of libs.

  • Waterwillows

I think your estimates of waiting periods in National Social Heath Care countries are off the mark.

Waiting period for just about everything under the sun is more like two years at present. The future seems to indicated even longer waits, while more and more services that were coverd, now are not.

    It is all downhill.

    • http://www.cavalierx.com CavalierX

The Wait Time Alliance's 2009 report card for Canada has an interesting report on approximate wait times. I noted that while the times are listed in days for Canada, in America the wait time for the same procedure is probably around the same number of hours.

The problem with comedians is that their whole lives are oriented around being witty and charismatic. They tend to forget the supremacy of “correct” over “clever”. Likewise, many of them took up comedy to escape a dysfunctional middle american existence, and as consequence don't have much sympathy for what common folks think.

    • Don_cos (USN RET)

Except that Bill Maher is not a commedian. To be a commedian you need to be whitty and entertaining.

  • mightysamurai

    Back atcha, Bill.

  • Mr. EMT

Still waiting on a libtard to explain what is in the healchare bill that improves the quality of care people give.

Then I want to hear how great that quality is going to be when people are going to line up for miles for their “free care.”
Anyone on the loony left think 24 plus hour waits in the ER are great care? Thats what we have now with out the lower quality that obamacare will bring us.

  • jharp

“when people are going to line up for miles for their “free care.”"

Just who is getting “free care” you fucking dumbass?

Or didn't you hear? You stupid rednecks can no longer suck the taxpayer teat for nothing. Under ObamaCare you leeches now have to buy insurance.

    “Bill Maher Thinks You’re Stupid”

    I'm sorry. I forgot.

Bill Maher is right. You are stupid.

Obama cut taxes for 95% of us and you idiots are still trying to deny it.

You tell me . Is it stupidity? Or is it racism?

  • gfchicago

Flagged for stupidity and spouting that same stupid talking point about 95% of people getting tax breaks. When are you going to get a clue, we don't want you hanging around here, because you make absolutely no sense and keep spouting the same old bs?

Of course he does. He's a troll and that's what they do. They thrive upon negative attention.

Ha, yes because if anything sticks it to the leeches it's socialism. Nothing forces self-reliance like being promised free everything.

    Yaweh this human is moronic.

Drat, i missed more of his adolescent stupidity.
Probably a rant about how stupid I am for not being aware that obamao cut taxes for me.

Tell you what also got cut, the prosperity level. More people are in poverty now under obamao than they were before.
Support for obamao is also cut.
Even people who authored his bills admit they failed.

    Same brainless retarded rant.
only 95% of working class eligible recieved a tax credit.
95% of the public did not recieve tax cuts under obamao.

But hey, thanks for admitting again you are a communist who sides with socialism.
Why the hell do you think anyone would respect a damned lie you say?

    I didn't think so.

It is enough to see you backpeddling and now that you have, please dont go back to the same bull shit bald faced lie of “95% of us recieved tax cuts” after you just admitted that 95% of the people in america did not receive it
And seriously the whole meme you spew shows what a retard you are:

I don't think Bill Maher is stupid, I think he's a fool. Being smart isn't really all that useful if you have no discernment to use it properly.

    • gfchicago

I don't think that he is necessarily stupid, quite the contrary, he found an opportunity to make fools out of those people in congress and it will probably boost his ratings.

These people in congress think they are so smart in their arrogance, that they don't realize when they are being made fun of.

      • http://www.wordaroundthenet.com Christopher Taylor

There's a quote I love when it comes to leftists: “so stupid only an intellectual could believe it.”

Well said Christopher. That is exactly how most of us felt about George W.

A classic. And though I've enjoyed my time here tonight I've got to get some sleep. Hiked about 4 miles in very challenging terrain. That after dropping my daughter off at her federally founded and funded land grant college. I am exhausted.

    God you people are stupid.

  • Mr. EMT

Don't forget to take your dose of lithium, retard.
After the display of insecurity your wild mood swings are bound to become intolerable on your parents. Wouldn't want to hear about them dumping you farther than four miles from home to try to get rid of your freeloading ass again.

  • Proud Infidel

Bill Maher, such a typical lefty. Rush pointed an interesting fact about British socialized medicine on his show, and that's the fact that there are very well-equipped, modern hospitals in Great Britain, and they're PRIVATE. That is, the wealthy, i.e. politicians and the privileged who can afford it, DO get top of the line health care, and they PAY for it. The everyday citizen shackled to the state system has to suffer the third-rate peon treatment that the government offers.
“Government does not solve problems, it subsidizes them.”
“Governments tend not to solve problems, only to rearrange them- Ronald Reagan

  • http://www.facebook.com/rjschwarz Robert Schwarz

Maher has made his full journey. Back in the day on Comedy Central he was a Libertarian. Then he became a lefty Libertarian. He liked lefty causes but not big government. Now he seems to be embracing big government as well.
