Larry David Urinates on Portrait of Jesus on TV
Written By : Dave Blount

Larry David, husband of High Priestess of the Goracle Laurie David, gave us some insight into the sincerity of liberal “tolerance” on the latest episode of his HBO show “Curb Your Enthusiasm”:

During Sunday’s episode, David, who created, wrote and produced “Seinfeld,” visits a bathroom in his assistant’s home and splatters urine on a picture of Jesus. Instead of wiping it off, David leaves the restroom. Minutes later, David’s assistant enters the bathroom and concludes that Jesus is crying. She then summons her mother to the bathroom, where both women kneel in prayer.

If a crucifix submerged in urine can be high art, why can’t urinating on portraits of Jesus be high comedy?

In lieu of an apology, HBO sneered:

Anyone who follows Curb Your Enthusiasm knows that the show is full of parody and satire. Larry David makes fun of everyone, most especially himself. The humor is always playful and certainly never malicious.

Now who would think this was malicious? Vicious, blasphemous, wicked, obviously — but malicious?

Contrast this with the obsequious treatment our liberal rulers have demanded we give Islam ever since 9/11. Despite the claim that David “makes fun of everyone,” you won’t see him peeing on a Koran.

Basically, this is just gutless. It's like punching an Amish. You know you are safe, because they are Amish, so you are getting your kicks acting out your desire to abuse something that won't fight back.

But, notice, this same person would not dare to abuse someone that fights back.

All in all, I take this to be a mark of respect by the idiot. He knows we largely believe what we say we believe and will turn the other cheek.

Meh, I don't think there is much to get upset about here. Anybody who looks to this show as example of 'tolerance' of any kind is in for a rude awakening, in fact the comedic hook is often parodying the absurdness of modern liberal ideals about toerance and fairness. The entire appeal of the show is that Larry David is a self-absorbed dick (parodying the self-absorbed dickiness of our entire society) who constantly gets into trouble for doing the wrong thing. It's not as if they were presenting his actions as being acceptable or positive. In the show, nobody really likes him and he has no real friends because of behaviors like this. If that's an endorsement of his behavior, it is a prety lame one.

And besides, in the same episode he goes off on one of those semi-chubby chicks who go around wearing midriff revealing half shirts and tight pants all the time, which makes up for any other wrongdoings IMNSHO. ;-)

The show has quite a few conservative fans exactly because it is completely irreverent and politically incorrect, and since this all comes from a culturally liberal perspective it is even funnier, becasue it addresses the double standard conservatives often face when liberals get preachy about tolerance and fairness.

No argument there, but again, the show revolves around exploring the complete depths of Larry David's gutlessness. The previous week, it was wheelchair-bound people who provided the substrate for this demonstration. Before that it was cancer patients. Of course they were going to get around to Christians.

I just hope none of these people bother with an apology. I wouldn't believe it, and it would just be another meaningless apology cluttering up the airwaves. I think it's better for them to show their true colors so everyone knows exactly where they stand.

You mean like "I'm sorry if anyone was offended (but you are obviously too stupid to understand art if you were)?"

Didn't he actually divorce Laurie David in part because she yammered on about global warming 24/7?

"Well, after the divorce, I went home and turned all the lights on!" the Curb Your Enthusiasm star, whose onscreen wife played by Cheryl Hines is also a Prius-promoting environmentalist, told reporters last week at the Television Critics' Association press tour in Beverly Hills."

Not that it has anything to do with the topic at hand…

How odd it is to have Vas Eleen decry a TV character who has as much contempt for the human race as does he.

I don't want you ignored, just GONE. But please go on, never-show, demonstrate more of your lies and stupidity, if nothing else it's good for a laugh.

I presume this is another typically misleading headline from Van Helsing. At first glance, you would think Larry David was standing in front of the portrait and aiming for it. I didn't actually see the episode, but David splattering urine on the picture means just that … it splattered off the urinal or out of the toilet, yes?

I'm not saying that its not offensive that he didn't wipe it off (the show is supposed to offensive after all) but aren't you conservatives tired of partisan hacks like Van Helsing giving the rest of you a bad name by deliberately using loaded and misleading headlines?

"…but aren't you conservatives tired of partisan hacks…"

Why yes, most of us conservatives are indeed tired of partisan hacks. Thank you so much for asking. Now maybe you can take the hint and constructively help us deal with our fatigue.

Seriously? Have you ever seen the show?

Normally I love your posts, but you chose your target poorly this time. The entire series is all about larry david doing incredibly insensitive things (sometimes the audience is on his side, sometimes not) and people getting all worked up over it.

Next up, he'll take a steaming dump on a Koran to show how cutting edge he is. Yeah, sure he will.

  • http://conservativebootcamp.com martinhale

Count me amongst those who’re not grievously offended by this. Yeah, it’s a bit edgy, but it’s definitely not ‘cutting edge’, nor is it presented as a depiction of any reality whatsoever. It’s Larry David being the same person he’s been for decades. Honestly, throughout the span of his career, David has indeed made a lot more jokes about Jews and Jewish cultural characteristics than he has Christians/Christianity. Look at how much of the material on Seinfeld poked fun at Jewish stereotypes. The Jerry character often mouthed the punch-lines to those “Jew-bashing” jokes himself. Remember the whole “Tim Watley DDS converted to Judaism for the jokes” meme? And the rabbi in Elaine’s building who aired her jealousy at George getting married on his late night cable advice show? Then there was George’s father shaking off his fear of cooking by doing the catering on Kramer’s Jewish Singles party?

Look folks, one of the differences between Christians and some other religionists is that Christians seem much better equipped at dealing with “affronts” such as this without coming unglued about it. Imagine for a moment, if you will, the same show translated into Arabic, broadcast on al-HBOeerya, and the picture of Jesus Christ is a Koran. The next few weeks would be a melange of demonstrations which turn violent, attacks on non-Muslims, calls for death to whoever created the show and probably to those who broadcast it. The UN would be pressed to pass just one more resolution. And any sponsor of such a display would be pilloried in the marketplace, if not literally, then financially. Personally, I think it’s a mark of maturity and some superiority that Christians can handle such stupidity with a calm and grace that’s sorely missing in mainstream Islam.

Would I prefer that Mr. David continue with such humour? Not really. Do I support his right under our Constitution to make offensive statements? You betcha. Am I supporting Mr. David’s livelihood in any way? Nope, I only subscribed to HBO for six months as a part of an introductory offer from one of the satellite providers a few years ago, and it was before CYE was on HBO.
