If you see a hole in your pen cap, THIS is why it’s there.

What happens when you choke on a pen cap? It draws the air out of you, right? Did you ever notice the hole in a pen cap? It’s there for a very good reason! Bic made the design popular in 1991 to help prevent choking deaths as a result of pens. That little hole isn’t guaranteed to save your life, but it does permit a little bit of air to get through until official help arrives.

The manufacturer’s intent was to ensure that, in the event that a pen cap became lodged in a person’s throat, the hole would allow for the passage of air until help could arrive.

This doesn’t mean it’s safe to chew on pen caps, so I’d still refrain from chewing on pen caps or anything resembling a pen cap.
